  • An experiment was carried out to compare the suitability in visual tasks between flat and conventional (convex) cathode-ray tube (CRT) displays. The subjects performed visual search tasks during 2-h for detecting target words among distracters presented on the screen. The subjects' visual performance was evaluated with average time and number of errors made to complete the tasks. Visual fatigue after the search tasks was also evaluated in terms of degradations in accommodative power and subjective ratings. Difference was not found in task time between the two displays, but flat CRT showed a lower number of errors than conventional CRT. The difference in number of errors was statistically significant at 0=0.05. Although there was no difference between the displays in degradations of accommodative power, results from the subjective ratings showed that flat CRT yields less fatigue than conventional CRT. The results partially support the hypothesis that panel convexity of CRT displays has a significant effect on the performance and fatigue during visual tasks and thus flat CRT is the better display than conventional one.

  • We describe a new method to initialize the raster and convergence of a flat intelligent tracking (F!T) tube. By splitting up the initialization algorithm into three parts, it can comply with the variety of boundary conditions that are stated for a consumer product. Experiments on raster initialization have shown that the new algorithm speeds up the initialization by one order of magnitude.

  • The flat dilatometer(DMT) has been practically used as an in-situ test equipment. It is a simple, rapid and cost-effective tool to characterize the in-situ stress-strain-strength properties of various types of ground materials. However, the results of flat DMT should be validated with considerable data with respect to the known reference values for a specific site. In this study, the applicability of existing relationships which were established for other local deposits is verified by performing the tests in several clay deposits. To compare with the DMT results, field vane tests and cone penetration tests were also carried out in the same field as reference tests, and unconsolidated undrained tests, oedometer tests, and other fundamental material properties tests were conducted on the thin-walled tube samples in the laboratory. The results of the flat DMT combined with empirical correlations are used to estimate soil types, unit weights, coefficients of lateral earth pressure at rest, overconsolidation ratios, constrained moduli and undrained shear strengths of three clay local deposits. It was found that various geotechnical properties estimated from the flat DMT generally well agree with those from the reference tests.

  • Convective boiling heat transfer coefficients of R-22 were obtained in a flat extruded aluminum tube with $D_h=1.41mm$ . The test range covered mass flux from 200 to 600 $kg/m^2s$, heat flux from 5 to 15 $kW/m^2$ and saturation temperature from $5^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$ . The heat transfer coefficient curve shows a decreasing trend after a certain quality(critical quality). The critical quality decreases as the heat flux increases, and as the mass flux decreases. The early dryout at a high heat flux results in a unique 'cross-over' of the heat transfer coefficient curves. The heat transfer coefficient increases as the mass flux increases. At a low quality region, however, the effect of mass flux is not prominent. The heat transfer coefficient increases as the saturation temperature increases. The effect of saturation temperature, however, diminishes as the heat flux decreases. Both the Shah and the Kandlikar correlations underpredict the low mass flux and overpredict the high mass flux data.

  • The welding pressure in extru bending process is affected by the shape of welding chamber of porthole die. It is very important to increase the welding pressure when the tube should be extruded particulary from four billets of the materials. The high circumferential stress of the tube can make the welding pressure increase during the extru-bending. In order to increase the circumferential stress, it is necessary to make the billets pass through the narrow gap between the conical die and the conical plug. This paper describes the welding pressure by the experiments and the analysis with the two types of the chamber. One of them is the chamber between the flat die and straight mandrel, and the other one is the chamber between the conical die and conical plug. The results of the experiments and the analysis shows that the conical chamber makes the welding pressure increase by the effect of the reducing diameter of tube and the welding pressure by the conical dic and plug is stronger than the welding pressure by the flat die and straight mandrel.

  • The air and water flow distribution are experimentally studied for a heat exchanger composed of round headers and 10 flat tubes. The effects of tube protrusion depth as well as mass flux, and quality are investigated, and the results are compared with the previous 30 channel results. The flow at the header inlet is annular. For the downward flow configuration, the water flow distribution is significantly affected by the tube protrusion depth. For flush-mounted geometry, significant portion of the water flows through frontal part of the header. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. The effect of mass flux or quality is qualitatively the same as that of the protrusion depth. Increase of the mass flux or quality forces the water to rear part of the header. For the upward flow configuration, different from the downward configuration, significant portion of the water flows through the rear part of the header. The effect of the protrusion depth is the same as that of the downward flow. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. However, the effect of mass flux or quality is opposite to the downward flow case. As the mass flux or quality increases, more water flows through the frontal part of the header. Compared with the previous thirty channel configuration, the present ten channel configuration yields better flow distribution. Possible explanation is provided from the flow visualization results.

  • The rapid development in digital acquisition technology in radiography has not been accompanied by information regarding optimum radiolographic technique for use with an amorphus silicon flat panel detector. The purpose of our study was to compared image quality and radiation dose of an amorphus silicon flat panel detectors for digital chest radiography. All examinations were performed by using an amorphus silicon flat panel detector. Chest radiographs of an chest phantom were obtained with peak kilovoltage values of $60{\sim}150kVp$. Published data on the effect of x-ray beam energy on image quality and patient dose when using an amorphus silicon flat panel detector. It is important that radiographers are aware of optimum kVp selection for an amorphus silicon flat panel detector system, particularly for the commonly performed chest examination.

  • Cellulose production by Acetobacter pasteurianus was investigated in static culture using four bioreactors with silicone rubber membrane submerged in the medium. The shape of the membrane was flat sheet, flat sack, tube and cylindrical balloon. Production rate of cellulose as well as its yield on consumed glucose by the bacteria grown on the flat type membranes was approximately ten-fold greater than those on the non-flat ones in spite of the same membrane thickness. The membrane reactor using flat sacks of silicone rubber membrane as support of bacterial pellicle can supply greater ratio of surface to volume than a conventional liquid surface culture and is promising for industrial production of bacterial cellulose in large scale.

  • A ribbed tube consumes more power to transport the fluid by comparing with flat one. After the tangential velocity component occurs, its contact area with the ribbed tube becomes large and it enables the effective energy transportation. The flow characteristics vary according to the geometry of tube rib. This study aims to investigate the flow characteristics of fluids working at Reynolds numbers of 20,000, 40,000, 60,000 and 80,000 with the air at $15^{\circ}C$ in the ribbed test tube high 1mm and wide 8.48mm. As the flow characteristics are included with the states of fully developed hydrodynamical region, axial velocity vector distribution and non-dimensional velocity distribution, they are shown with the physical validity.
