  • This study examined the community structure and temporal variation of the macro-crustaceans on Jangbong tidal flat, Incheon, Korea. Macro-crustaceans on this tidal flat were collected using a modified otter trawl from November 1999 to January 2001. The macro-crustaceans comprised 32 species, 7,741 individuals, and 29,211.3 gWWt during the study period. The Jangbong tidal flat was dominated numerically by three shrimp (Palaemon carinicauda, Crangon affinis, and Metapenaeus joyneri) and two portunid crabs (Charybdis japonica and Portunus trituberculatus). The macro-crustacean assemblages were divided into two different season and species groups based on the q-mode and r-mode clustering methods. In terms of q-mode, they consisted of a winter species group from December through April and a summer species group from May through November. The r-mode analysis showed that the species group visiting the tidal flat in winter was dominated numerically by palaemonid and crangonid shrimps, while a species group characterized by an abundance of portunid crabs and penaeid shrimps was more frequent in spring, summer, and autumn. In conclusion, our study revealed distinct temporal variation in the tidal flat use by macro-crustaceans around Jangbong Island, Incheon, Korea.

  • Local and overall heat transfer characteristics of fin-flat tube heat exchangers with and without vortex generators are investigated. Local heat transfer coefficients are measured with the heat exchanger model using naphthalene sublimation technique. In case of a fin-flat tube heat exchanger without vortex generators, only the horseshoe vortices formed around tubes augment the heat transfer. On the other hand, longitudinal vortices created artificially by vortex generators enhance heat transfer dramatically in case of a fin-flat tube heat exchanger with vortex generators. Overall heat transfer coefficients are measured with the prototype of the fin-flat tube heat exchanger with and without vortex generators in a wind tunnel and results are compared with those of a fin-circular tube heat exchanger with wavy fin. Friction losses for heat exchangers are also measured and compared. The fin-flat tube heat exchanger with vortex generators is found to be more effective than the fin-circular tube heat exchanger with wavy fin.

  • Species composition and distribution patterns of shellfish were investigated in Eoeun and Geojeon tidal flat located in the Saemangeum area on the west coast of Korea from May to October 2000. Nineteen species of shellfish were collected in Geojeon tidal flat. The samples in number of individuals included Umbonium thomasi $(90.0\%)$ and Mactra veneriformis $(5.0\%).$ In Eoeun tidal flat, ten species of shellfish were collected and the dominant species in number of individuals were Potamocorbula amurensis $(55.0\%)$ and U. thomasi $(18.6\%).$ These results were compared with previous studies conducted before the beginning of reclamation in Saemangeum. Compared with the results from 1988, a change In species composition was observed. Laternula flexuosa and Nuttallia olivacea appeared, while Mactra chinensis and Coelomactra antiquata disappeared in the deposition area in Geojeon tidal flat. In the erosion area of Eoeun tidal flat, M. veneriformis and Meretrix lusoria appeared, while Cyclina sinensis disappeared. Based on a cluster analysis, the shellfish community in Eoeun tidal flat was classified into three station groups based on sediment types. Geojeon tidal flat was also classified into three station groups. The distribution of shellfish in the Saemangeum area was closely related to the sediment types.

  • In the previous paper, authors proposed the unified equivalent frame method (UEFM) for the lateral behavior analysis of the flat plate structure subjected to the combined gravity and lateral loads, in which the rotations of torsional members were distributed to the equivalent column and the equivalent slab according to the relative ratio of gravity and lateral loads. In this paper, the lateral behavior of the multi-span flat plate structures under various levels of combined gravity and lateral loads were analyzed by the proposed UEFM, which were compared with test results as well as those estimated by existing models. In addition, to consider the stiffness degradation of the flat plate system after cracking, the stiffness reduction factors for torsional members were derived from the test results of the interior and exterior slab-column connection specimens, based on which the simplified nonlinear push-over analysis method for flat plate structures was proposed. The simplified nonlinear analysis method provided good agreements with test results and is considered to be very useful for the practical design of the flat plate structures under the combined gravity and lateral loads.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the controlling factors to construct tidal flat ecosystems having similar characteristics as natural ones. We transplanted the soil in a constructed tidal flat to a natural one and vice versa. Parameters monitored after these transplantations were silt content, organic matter, bacterial population and oxidation-reduction potential. Moreover, the relationship among silt content, organic matter and bacterial population was investigated by laboratory column experiment. The silt content, organic matter, bacterial population and vertical profile of oxidation-reduction potential in the soil transplanted from the constructed tidal flat to the natural one changed to similar values to those in the natural one. On the contrary, all the parameters for the soil transplanted from the natural tidal flat to the constructed one changed to similar values as those in the constructed one. The silt contents in thses two transplanted solis were in proportion to the organic carbon contents and bacterial population. Similarly, the bacterial population in laboratory column experiment increased with the increase in silt and organic matter contents. It seemed to be important to select a place to enhance accumulative of silt and/or to maintain the silt content by hydrodynamic control of seawater in order to construct a tidal flat having similar characteristics as natural one.

  • Designating conservation sites is needed for the preservation and management of tidal flats, and also objective criteria, by which preservation values of tidal flats can be evaluated, are required to designate conservation sites. A set of new evaluation criteria or tidal flats was suggested in this study. The criteria, based on six items including scarcity, diversity, naturalness, uniqueness, destruction possibility and preservation will, ave the advantages with which easy and economic assessments are possible by using basic data from the preceding studies. The evaluation results for the three different tidal lats (Muan, Jeungdo-1 and Jeungdo-2) in the southwestern coast of Korea reveal that all he tidal flats evaluated are classified into grade 2. The tidal flat which got the highest valuation score was Jeungdo-1 tidal flat (86.7), and the next was Muan (85.0) and Jeungdo-2 (82.5). The Jeungdo-2 tidal flat was superior in uniqueness and destruction possibility, and the Muan tidal flat was superior in diversity and naturalness.

  • Many boring investigations were achieved in Youngjong-North tidal flat to construct the Incheon International Airport Expressway. Vertical sedimentary profile of this tidal flat has been studied by analyzing these boring data. The deposits of Youngjong-North tidal flat are about 30 meters thick, and the sedimentary layers consist of basal gravel, lower mud, middle silt, middle mud, and upper silt layers in ascending order. Semi-consolidated and oxidized belt with yellowish brown color, which appears above or within middle mud layer, exists in $-3{\sim}-5$ meters altitude. There are some stratigraphical problems to admit the top surface of this oxidized belt as the unconformity surface between Holocene and Pre-Holocene tidal flat deposit.

  • The first attention in designing a transformer for low temperature rise should be to reduce losses. Leakage inductance and temperature rise are two of the more impotent problems facing the magnetic core technology of today's high frequency transformers. Excessive leakage inductance increases the stress on the switching transistors and limits the duty-cycle, and excessive temperature rise can lead the design limitation of high frequency transformer with high current. The flat transformer technology provides a very good solution to the problems of leakage inductance and thermal management for high frequency power. The critical magnetic components and windings are optimized and packaged within a completely assembled module. The turns ratio in a flat transformer is determined as the product of the number of elements or modules times the number of primary turns. The leakage inductance increase proportionately to the number of elements, but since it is reduced as the square of the turns, the net reduction can be very significant. The flat transformer modules use cores which have no gap. This eliminates fringing fluxes and stray flux outside of the core. The secondary windings are formed of flat metal and are bonded to the inside surface of the core. The secondary winding thus surrounds the primary winding, so nearly all of the flux is captured.

  • When an almost flat surface under test is measured by an interferometer, the measurement result is largely influenced by systematic errors that include geometrical errors of a reference flat surface. To determine the systematic errors of the interferometer by the conventional method that is called the three flat method, we must take the reference flat surface out from the interferometer and measure it. Because of difficulties to set the reference flat surface to the interferometer exactly and quickly, this method is not practical. On the other hand, the method that measures a surface under test with some shifts in the direction being perpendicular to the optical axis of the interferometer is studied. However, the parasitic pitching, rolling and up-down movement caused by the above shifts brings serious error to the measurement result, and the algorithm by which the influences can be eliminated is not still established. In this paper, we propose the self-calibration algorithm for determining the systematic errors that include geometrical errors of a reference flat surface by several rotation shifts and a linear shift of general surface under test, and verify by a numerical experiment that this algorithm is useful for determining the systematic errors.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate into the development of a thin flat panel photo-bioreactor case with characteristics shapes. The thin flat panel photo-bioreactor case was designed to be manufactured from a plastic thermoforming process. A proper design with a relatively high rigidity was obtained through the structural analyses for different designs of the photo-bioreactor case. The thermoforming analyses were performed. From the results of the thermoforming analyses, a proper forming condition and the formability of the designed plastic photo-bioreactor case were estimated. The thermoforming moulds for the flat panel photobioreactor cases were manufactured. The thermoforming experiments were performed to examine the manufacturability of the designed flat panel photo-bioreactor cases. From the results of the thermoforming experiments, it was shown that thin flat panel photo-bioreactor cases with characteristic shapes can be manufactured from the designed thermoforming mould and process.
