  • To enhance the cutting performance of the tool, single or multilayer coating is applied on the substrate of the tool. Coating material reduces cutting force and heat generation in tool-chip contact zone and enhances resistance against abrasive wear. This paper presents that the effect of different coatings on abrasive wear resistance varies with work material and the flank wear rate is different with depth of cut. Crater wear rate is also found to decrease with higher thermal diffusivity of coating material. It is verified that the estimated thermal diffusivity of multilayer coating has consistent effect on the crater wear.

  • A turning (facing) test on Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics was performed with several tool materials, e.g., cemented carbides, cermet and ceramic, and the wear patterns and wear rate were analyzed to clarify the relation between physical(mechanical) properties and flank wear of cutting tool. The main results are obtained as follows: (1) When cutting speed is increased, the flank wear in every tool material grows the abnormal wear in the shape of triangle at a certain speed, i.e., a critical speed. (2) When cutting speed is increased, the wear rate in experimental tool material starts to increase remarkably at a critical speed. (3) The thermal conductivity among the properties of the tool material and the thermal crack coefficient of it are almost in proportion to the critical speed. (4) The order of performance in tool materials for cutting GFRP is K 10, M10, P20, TiC, CB.

  • An observational study on the recurrences of left abomasal displacement after surgical correction was conducted in 178 Holstein cows. The correction methods were right flank omentopexy (A), right ventral paramedian abomasopexy (B) and left flank abomasopexy (C). Four(5.4) out of 74 cows by method A, 2(2.0) out of 101 cows by method B and 1(33.3%) out of 3 cows by method C had the recurrence of the disease after the first operation. As for the method A, 3 cows and a cow recurred 13-18 months and 27 months after the first operation, respectively. As for the method B, recurrence of the disease in two cows occurred 14 and 19 days after surgery, respectively. In a cow which had been indicated by method C, the recurrence was recurred 14 months after the operation.

  • A seven-year-old male poodle was presented with multiple non-pruritic draining skin lesions. On physical examination the dog was depressed and had three draining nodules 3.0 to 4.0 cm in diameter on the neck, flank and back. The multifocal sparing of fat lobules, macrophages, and numerous neutrophils were observed in aspiration cytologic examination of nodule. Haematological examination demonstrated a moderate leukocytosis and neutrophilia. An aerobic bacterial culture was undertaken from draining lesions on the flank. But there was no bacterial growth in aerobic culture. Therapy was initiated with oral cephalexin at a dose of 20 mg/kg, body weight three times daily and prednisolone at 1.0 mg/kg twice daily. The (lug returned to normal within 24 hours of treatment and its general attitute and appetite were improved. However, within 1 month new nodules had appeared on the dorsum over the rump, coalescing into a mass of draining nodules and tracts.

  • The cutting characteristics of hardened steel(AISI 52100) by PCBN tools is investigated with respect to cutting force, workpiece surface roughness and tool flank wear by the vision system. Hard Owning is carried out with various cutting conditions; spindle rotational speed, depth of cut and feed rate. Backpropagation neural networks(BPNs) are used for detection of tool wear. The input vectors of neural network comprise of spindle rotational speed, feed rates, vision flank wear, and thrust force signals. The output is the tool wear state which is either usable or failure. The detection of the abnormal states using BPNs achieves $96.8\%$ reliability even when the spindle rotational speed and feedrate are changed.

  • A study on the Correlation of Orthogonal Cutting Parameter (Cutting speed, Depth of cut, Feed Rate) and Acoustic Emission Signal. It is well known that acoustic emission (AE) is the emission of elastic wave resulting from the deformation and fracture of materials. This study estabished correlation of orthogonal cutting parameter and AE signal, and researched into in-process monitoring of tool wear and failure. The results are as follow; 1. AE RMS was under the influence of cutting speed but hardly influenced by depth of cut and feed rate. 2. AE RMS was under the influence of flank wear. 3. AE count rate increased by increased cutting speed. 4. AE RMS value was rapidly increased in 130 m flank wear.

  • Recently, monitoring of tool life is a matter of common interesting because tool life affects precision, productivity and cost in machining process. Especially flank wear has a direct effect on cutting mechanism, so the various pattern of cutting force is obtained experimentally according to variation of wear condition. By investigating cutting force signal, AR(Autoregressive) modeling and correlation dimension analysis is conducted in turning operation. In this modeling and analysis, we extract features through 6th AR model, correlation integral and normalized correlation integral. After the back-propagation model of the neural network is utilized to monitor tool life according to flank wear. As a result. a very reliable classification of tool life was obtained.

  • Tungsten carbide (WC) circular saws have been widely used to cut plywood. Recently, expensive polycrystalline diamond (PCD) were adopted to extend the tool life of circular saws. This study developed a PCD-WC combination circular saw and compared its performance with that of existing WC and PCD saws. Flank wear of WC saw blades and edge chipping of rectangular PCD was observed during the experiments. The PCD-WC saw replaced half of the chamfered teeth with PCD and applied tough WC for all rectangular teeth. In the experiments, edge chipping was not observed in rectangular WC teeth and the flank wear of chamfered teeth was decreased compared with that of conventional circular saws.

  • A neutered male Maltese, 11-year-old, presented for hard mass at right flank suddenly. Patient vomited and had anorexia before the presentation, but it is improved after. On blood tests, there were no remarkable findings. On physical examination, firm mass ($2.9{\times}2.6cm$, firm) was detected. No remarkable finding was shown in radiography except for right upper-medial abdominal subcutaneous soft tissue mass. Punch biopsy was performed for histopathologic examination. During the punch biopsy, ice-cream stick ($11.5{\times}1.2cm$) appeared from the hole on right flank. Additionally gastric perforation was detected on ultrasonography. Emergency surgery was performed for the perforation. On histiopathologic examination of the mass, marked, diffuse, neutrophilic and mild eosinophilic dermatitis/cellulitis with no infectious agents was observed.

  • Traumatic flank hernia (TFH) is rare and prone to recurrence, which makes appropriate treatment challenging. No current guidelines define the optimal timing and method of repair. Meanwhile, recent advances in laparoscopic techniques are reshaping the options for the treatment of TFH. A dual approach that utilizes both laparoscopic and open methods has not previously been reported. Herein, we present the successful treatment of TFH after blunt trauma. A 46-year-old male patient underwent elective herniorrhaphy on hospital day 3, in which laparoscopic implantation of a sublay mesh and extracorporeal implantation of an onlay mesh were performed. Such techniques may be appropriate and result in feasible outcomes in hemodynamically stable patients with large TFH who are strongly suspected of having bowel herniation or concomitant intraperitoneal injuries. Larger studies are needed to assess the long-term results.
