The purpose of this study is to develop a nonlinear algorithm for the dynamic interaction analysis of KTX trains and bridge girders with consideration of separation and flange contact phenomena between wheel and rail. For this, three interaction models between wheel-rail are implemented and compared through numerical examples. That is, the spring model and the non-jump model are briefly explained, and a nonlinear contact model is then proposed to accurately simulate interaction forces of the train-bridge system. Dynamic interaction analysis of a simply supported girder and trains is performed and the analyzed results are presented and compared for the proposed contact model and the other model types. Particularly, flange contact phenomena in the nonlinear contact model are demonstrated under a specific condition.
Most transportation departments have recognized and developed procedures to address the ever-increasing weights of trucks traveling on bridges in a service today. Transportation agencies also recognize the issues with overheight vehicles' collisions with bridges, but few stakeholders have definitive countermeasures. Bridges are becoming more vulnerable to collisions from overheight vehicles. The exact response under lateral impact force is difficult to predict. In this paper, nonlinear impact analysis shows that the degree of deformation recorded through the modeling of the unprotected vehicle-girder model provides realistic results compared to the observation from the US-61 bridge overheight vehicle impact. The predicted displacements are 0.229 m, 0.161 m, and 0.271 m in the girder bottom flange (lateral), bottom flange (vertical), and web (lateral) deformations, respectively, due to a truck traveling at 112.65 km/h. With such large deformations, the integrity of an impacted bridge becomes jeopardized, which in most cases requires closing the bridge for safety reasons and a need for rehabilitation. We proposed different sacrificial cushion systems to dissipate the energy of an overheight vehicle impact. The goal was to design and tune a suitable energy absorbing system that can protect the bridge and possibly reduce stresses in the overheight vehicle, minimizing the consequences of an impact. A material representing a Sorbothane high impact rubber was chosen and modeled in ANSYS. Out of three sacrificial schemes, a sandwich system is the best in protecting both the bridge and the overheight vehicle. The mitigation system reduced the lateral deflection in the bottom flange by 89%. The system decreased the stresses in the bridge girder and the top portion of the vehicle by 82% and 25%, respectively. The results reveal the capability of the proposed sacrificial system as an effective mitigation system.
In strengthening structure, the external post-tensioning method which secure clearness in the structure analysis process is adopted to bridges as well as architecture structure. In this study, to investigate the behavior of composite beam in the process of post-tensioning, the amount of prestress force loss, the amount of prestressed compression stress at the lower flange and the behavior of lower flange connected with anchorage are analyzed by comparing the results of finite element analysis with the measured results of installed strain gauges. After finishing the post-tensioning, the strengthening effect of external post-tensioning method is analyzed by static loading test. It is also investigated that the strengthening effect of shear section in the harped external post-tensioning specimens.
Integral abutment bridges (IABs) have no joint across the length of bridge and are therefore also known as jointless bridges. IABs have many advantages, such as structural integrity, efficiency, and stability. More importantly, IABs have proven to be have both low maintenance and construction costs. However, due to the restraints at both ends of the girder due to the absence of a gap (joint), special design considerations are required. For example, while replacing the deck slabs to extend the service life of the IAB, the buckling strength of the steel girder without a deck slab could be much smaller than the case with deck slab in place. With no deck slab, the addition of thermal expansion in the steel girders generates passive earth pressure from the abutment and if the applied axial force is greater than the buckling strength of the steel girders, buckling failure can occur. In this study, numerical simulations were performed to estimate the buckling strength of typical steel girders in IABs. The effects of girder length, the width of flange and thickness of flange, imperfection due to fabrication and construction errors on the buckling strengths of multiple and single girders in IABs are studied. The effect of girder spacing, span length ratio (for a three span girder) and self-weight effects on the buckling strength are also studied. For estimation of the reaction force of the abutment generated by the passive earth pressure of the soil, BA 42/96 (2003), PennDOT DM4 (2015) and the LTI proposed equations (2009) were used and the results obtained are compared with the buckling strength of the steel girders. Using the selected design equations and the results obtained from the numerical analysis, equations for preventing the buckling failure of steel girders during deck replacement for maintenance are presented.
The tension type joint is a mechanically very efficient connection method, as it directly uses the load capacity of base metal or high tension bolt, the reduction of the number of drilling hole and fastening and the fatigue resistance. It is applied to the joint of girder and cross beam, horizontal joints of towers, beam to column joints, the secondary member joints of deck floor ends, and brackets. In this paper, static load tests for the T-type tension joint were conducted to investigate the structural behavior of the joint. The parameters were bolt diameter, flange thickness, and the reduction of clamping force of the joint. The failure modes and load capacity of joints and the effects of flange thickness, bolt diameter and clamping force were investigated.
Contact between wheel and rail leads to the creep phenomenon. Linear creep theory, assuming linear increase in the creep force vs creep, results in a critical speed at which the vibration of a railway vehicle goes to infinity. However, the actual creep force converges to a limited value, so that the vibration of a railway vehicle cannot increase indefinitely. In this study, the dynamics of a railway vehicle is investigated with a 6 DOF bogie model includingthe nonlinear creep curves of Vermeulen, Polach, and a newly calculated creep curve with strip theory. Strip theory considers the profiles of the wheel and rail. The results show that the vibration of a railway vehicle results in a limit-cycle over a specific running speed, and this limit-cycle becomes smaller as the slope of the creep-curve steepens. Moreover, a hunting phenomenon is caused due to flange contact, which restricts the magnitude of the limit-cycle.

In the case of the external cylindrical grinding machine, the grinding mechanism can cause a wheel to vibrate due to a wheel cutter. This phenomena will bring about the unsymmetric wear up to high frequency without any relation of rotational speed. So far, when the grinding spindle is analyzed, it is assumed that a wheel is considered as lumped mass at the endof a beam. Nowadays, there is a tendency to use the wheel with a lsrge diameter or CBN wheel to achieve the high speed and accuracy grinding performance. Therefore, this kind of assumption is no longer valid. At the analysis of the grinding spindle, the parameter which dapends on the dynamic characteristics is a combination force between each part. For example, there is the tightness torque of a bolt and taper element in the grindle. In addition, the material property of the wheel can contribute the dynamic characteristics. This paper shows the mode participation of the shell mode of the wheel in the grindle and the dynamic characteristics according to the parameters which are the configuration of the flange and tightness torque of a bolt and taper. Modal parameter of the wheel, flange and the spindle can be extracted through frequency response function obtained by modal test. After that, by changing the tightness torque and kinds of wheel, we could accomplish the test in the whole combined grinding spindle. To perform modal analysis of vibration characteristics in the grinding spindle, we could develop the model of finite element method.
Deep drawing is a forming process in which a blank of sheet metal is radially drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch and converted to required shape. Deep drawing involves complex material flow conditions and force distributions. Radial drawing stresses and tangential compressive stresses are induced in flange region due to the material retention property. These compressive stresses result in wrinkling phenomenon in flange region. Normally blank holder is applied for restricting wrinkles. Tensile stresses in radial direction initiate thinning in the wall region of cup. The thinning results into cracking or fracture. The finite element method is widely applied worldwide to simulate the deep drawing process. For real-life simulations of deep drawing process an accurate numerical model, as well as an accurate description of material behavior and contact conditions, is necessary. The finite element method is a powerful tool to predict material thinning deformations before prototypes are made. The proposed innovative methodology combines two techniques for prediction and optimization of thinning in automotive sealing cover. Taguchi design of experiments and analysis of variance has been applied to analyze the influencing process parameters on Thinning. Mathematical relations have been developed to correlate input process parameters and Thinning. Optimization problem has been formulated for thinning and Genetic Algorithm has been applied for optimization. Experimental validation of results proves the applicability of newly proposed approach. The optimized component when manufactured is observed to be safe, no thinning or fracture is observed.
The stud shear connector is the main force transfer member in the steel-concrete composite member, and the mechanical behavior is very complicated in the concrete. The concrete around the stud is subjected to the pry-out local pressure concentration of the stud, which can easily produce splitting mirco-cracks. In order to solve the problem of pry-out local splitting of stud shear connector, a kind of stud shear connector with constraint measure is proposed in this paper. Through the push-out test, the interface shear behavior of the new stud shear connector between steel and concrete flange plate was studied, and the difference between the new stud shear connector and the traditional stud connector was compared. The results show that the stud shear connector with constraint measure can effectively avoid the adverse effect of local pressure splitting by relying on its own constraint measure. The shear stiffness of the interface between steel and concrete flange plates is greatly improved, which provides a theoretical basis for the design of strong connection coefficient of steel-concrete composite structures.

Deep drawing process, one of sheet metal forming methods, is used widely. Circular or square shape blanks are currently studied mainly. Especially, circular blank for coating case of chip condenser remains bridges when it is made out of aluminum coil. The bridge reduces Material-withdrawal-rate of aluminum coil to $60\%$. This paper proposes a no-bridge blank instead of circular blank. To get the different values of two cases, comparison circular blank with no-bridge blank is accomplished in the point of thickness strain in the vicinity of flange. In order to find optimal condition in new proposed blank, several process variables - those are blank holder shape, die shape radii, punch shape radii and blank holding force - are changed.
