  • Silver conducting films were formed from nano-sized silver powders and glass frits prepared by flame spray pyrolysis. The mean sizes of the silver powders and glass frits were 73 and 63 nm, respectively. Nano-sized glass frits improved the adhesion strength of the silver conducting film to the glass substrate. The densities of the silver conducting films increased by increasing the glass contents of the films at firing temperatures of 400 and $500{^{\circ}C}$. The specific resistances of the silver conducting films with 5 wt.% glass of silver component were 7.8, 4.2 and 2.4 cm at firing temperatures of 400, 450 and $500{^{\circ}C}$.

  • In this study a quasi-dimensional model is developed to predict the combustion process and emissions of a GDI engine under ultra-lean conditions. Combustion of a GDI engine condition is modeled as two simultaneous processes to consider significant fuel stratification. The first process is premixed flame propagation described as burning in a hemispherically propagating flame. The second is diffusion-controlled combustion modeled as mixing of multiple spray zones in the burned gas region. Mixing is an important factor in ultra-lean conditions leaving stratified mixture of developing sprays behind the propagating premixed flame. Sheet breakup and Hiroyasu models are applied to predict the velocity of a hollow cone spray. Validation is performed against measured pressures and NOx and CO emissions at different load and rpm conditions in the test engine.

  • Metal matrix composites(MMCs) reinforced with ceramic particulates are receiving increasing attention because their high specific strength, low coefficient of thermal expansion and excellent wear resistance. Especially, Al-based composites(AMCs) have been widely applied for the aerospace and automotive industries. Such composites are mainly fabricated by the cast, powder metallurgy and infiltration process. In this study, SiC particulate reinforced Al-based composites were fabricated by thermal spray process and their wear behavior were investigated. Composites with different spray parameter were fabricated by using flame spray apparatus. Microstructure and wear behavior of the composites were observed by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and electron probe micro-analysis(EPMA).

  • This paper is investigated the entrainment of air into sprays which has significant effects on the combustion efficiency, stability of flame using the air-assisted twin-fluid nozzle in non-burning. The factors which may be expected to affect the entrainment of air by a liquid spray are: Relative velocity of droplet and ambient gas; Drop size and size distribution; Density and other property of the liquid. Here, axial, radial velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of spray droplet was measured with the PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry). Spray characteristics were also visualized using CCD camera. The results indicate that the entrainment rate increases more or less non-linearly with the downstream region.

  • In a small high-speed D. I. diesel engine, the injected fuel spray into the atmosphere of the high temperature is burnt by go through the process of break up, atomization, evaporation and process of ignition. These process are important to decide the emission control and the rate of fuel consumption and out put of power. Especially, in the case of injected fuel spray impinging on the wall of piston cavity, the geometry of piston cavity gives great influence the ignitability of injected fuel and the flame structure. Ordinary, the combustion chamber of driving engine have unsteady turbulent flow be attendant on such as the change of temperature, velocity and pressure. So the analysis of spray behavior is difficult. In this study, the spray was impinged on the wall of 3 types of piston cavity such as Dish, Toroidal, Re-entrant type, in order to analyze the combustion process of impinging spray precisely and systematically. And hot wire probe was used for analyze non-steady flow characteristics of impinging spray, and to investigate the behavior of spray, the aspects of concentration c(t), standard deviation σ(t) and variation factor(vf) was measured with the lapse of time.

  • In this work, the optimal process has been designed by $L_9(3^4)$ orthogonal array and analysis of variance(ANOVA) for thermal-sprayed Ni-based hard coating. Ni-based hard coatings were fabricated by flame spray process on steel substrate. Then, the hardness test and observation of microstructure of the coatings were performed. The results of hardness test were analyzed by ANOVA. The ANOVA results demonstrated that the acetylene gas flow had the greatest effect on hardness of the coatings. The oxygen gas flow was found to have a neglecting effect. From these results, the optimal combination of the flame spray parameters could be predicted. The calculated hardness of the coatings by ANOVA was found to lie close to that of confirmation experimental result. Thus, it was considered that design of experiments design using orthogonal array and ANOVA was useful to determine optimal process of thermal-sprayed Ni-based hard coating.

  • For the SI engines, at only full load, the pumping loss has a negligible effect, while at part load conditions, the pumping loss increases. To avoid the pumping loss, the spark-ignited engines are designed to inject gasoline directly into the combustion chamber. In the spark-ignited direct-injection engines, ignition probability is important for successful combustion and the flame propagation characteristics are also different from that of pre-mixed combustion. In this paper, a visualization experiment system is designed to study the ignition probability and combustion flame characteristics of spark-ignited direct-injection CNG fuel. The visualization system is composed of a combustion chamber, fuel supply system, air supply system, electronic control system and data acquisition system. It is found that ambient pressure, ambient temperature and ambient air flow velocity are important parameters which affect the ignition probability of CNG-air mixture and flame propagation characteristics and the injected CNG fuel can be ignited directly by a spark-plug under proper ambient conditions. For all cases of successful ignition, the flame propagation images were digitally recorded with an intensified CCD camera and the flame propagation characteristics were analyzed.

  • The formation and oxidation processes of soot particles in a diesel flame were investigated with a rapid compression machine. A cloud of soot particles was successfully visualized by means of the instantaneous laser shadow photographs technique and the equivalence ratio of the soot formation zone was estimated from a measured fuel concentration distribution in a nonevaporating spray. The temporal and spatial variation of soot concentration in the flame was also correlated with the rate of heat release. Soot particles appears first in a region near the flame tip when diffusion combustion period starts, and its concentration is a maximum at about the end of injection, then decreases due to oxidation. The reason for soot being formed in a fuel lean region near the flame tip is the evaporated fuel requires time to be pyrolized as it travels through the burning fuel rich zone towards the flame tip.

  • $CeO_2$ nanoparticles were prepared by a flame spray pyrolysis from aqueous solution of cerium nitrate. The morphology, structure crystallinity and specific surface area of as-prepared nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Telle (BET). The $CeO_2$ nanoparticles about 5 nm in diameter showed a cubic fluorite structure and polyhedral morphology. The average particle size increased as the cerium nitrate concentration increased. UV absorption performance of the as-prepared nanoparticles was measured by UV-visible spectroscopy. UV absorption of $CeO_2$ nanoparticles was more effective than that of commercial $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Effect of dopants such as Ti and Zn to $CeO_2$ nanoparticles on UV absorption properties was also investigated. In case of $Ti/CeO_2$, and $Zn/CeO_2$ nanoparticles, they showed a little higher UV absorption values compared with $CeO_2$ nanoparticles. The as-prepared nanoparticles can be promising materials with high UV absorption value.
