Effect of Pyrolyzing Fuel Position on Ignition and Flame Propagation in a Cylindrical Enclosure (원형공간내 열분해 연료의 위치변화에 따른 점화 및 화염전파 영향)

  • Investigation on ignition and flame propagation of pyrolyzing fuel in a cylindrical enclosure is accomplished. The pyrolyzing fuel of cylindrical shape is located in an outer cylinder sustained at high-temperature. Due to gravity, the buoyancy motion is inevitably incurred in the enclosure and this affects the flame initiation and propagation behavior. The radiative heat transfer plays an important role since a high temperature difference is involved in the problem. Therefore in all cases presented here, the intrinsic radiation effects are considered. Numerical studies have been performed over various governing parameters, such as Grashof number, overheat ratio, and vertical fuel eccentricity. Depending on the Grashof number, the flame behavior is found to be totally different: a separated visible flame appears as the Grashof number reaches 10(sup)7. The location of flame onset is also affected by the vertical eccentricity of inner pyrolyzing fuel as well as thermal conditions applied.

NUMERICAL METHOD FOR EVALUATION OF HYDROGEN FLAME ACCELERATION IN A COMPARTMENT OF A NUCLEAR POWER PLANT (원자력발전소 격실에서의 수소화염 가속에 대한 수치해석 연구)

  • Hydrogen safety is one of important issues for future public usage of hydrogen. When hydrogen is released in a compartment, the occurrence of detonation must be prohibited. In order to evaluate the possibility of DDT (Deflagration to Detonation Transition) in the compartment with the hydrogen release, sigma-lambda criteria which were developed from experimental data are commonly used. But they give a little conservative results because they do not consider the detailed geometrical effect of the compartment. This is the main reason of the need to mechanistic combustion model for evaluation of hydrogen flame propagation and acceleration. In this study, sigma-lambda criteria and combustion model were systematically applied to evaluate a possibility of DDT in a IRWST compartment of APR1400 nuclear power plant during a hypothetical accident. A combustion model in an open source CFD code OpenFOAM has been applied for analyses of hydrogen flame propagation. The model was validated by evaluating the flame acceleration tests conducted in FLAME facility. And it was applied to evaluate the characteristics of a hydrogen flame propagation in the IRWST compartment of APR1400.

Visualization of Initial Flame Development in an SI Engine (스파크 점화 엔진에서 초기화염 발달의 가시화)

  • Initial flame development and propagation were visualized under different fuel injection timings to relate the initial flame development to the engine stability in a port injection SI engine. Experiments were performed in an optical single cylinder engine modified from a production engine and images were captured through the quartz window mounted in the piston by an intensified CCD camera. Stratification state was controlled by varying injection timing. Under each injection condition, the flame images were captured at the pre-set crank angles. These were averaged and processed to characterize the flame. The flame stability was estimated by the weighted average of flame area, luminosity, and standard deviation of flame area. Results show that stratification state according to injection timing did not affect on the direction of flame propagation. The flame development and the initial flame stability are strongly dependent on the stratified conditions and the initial flame stability governs the engine stability and lean misfire limit.

Measurements on the Propagation Characteristics of the Hydrogen Flame by Ultra Fine Thermocouple (극세선 열전대에 의한 수소화염의 전파특성 측정)

  • Hydrogen is expected to become a new, clean source of energy for the next generation. Therefore, many studies have investigated the characteristics of the hydrogen flame. However, because the hydrogen flame has high temperature, the flame does not emit visible light, and the flame propagates at a high velocity, investigating its characteristics is difficult. In the present study, in order to simultaneously examine the flame temperature and flame propagation velocity of hydrogen/air mixtures, ultra fine thermocouples with diameters of 12.7, 25.4, and 50.8 ${\mu}m$ are utilized. The results show that it is possible to detect the arrival time of the flame. Due to the temperature compensation with the time constants of thermocouples, it is also possible to estimate the flame temperature.

Experimental Studies on the Interaction Between a Propagating Flame and Multiple Obstacles in a Rectangular Chamber

  • Experimental investigations were performed to assess the influences of different multiple obstacles on flame propagation in a rectangular confinement. Three different multiple obstacles were used: circular, triangular and square cross-sections with blockage ratios of 15% and 30%. The same method described in Park et al. [13] to investigate the interaction between the propagating flame and the obstacle was applied. Before the freely propagating flame impinged on the obstacle, the flame propagation speed remains close to the laminar burning velocity, regardless of the obstacles used. The reported data revealed that the trend in increase of the local flame propagation speed is a result of the interaction between the obstacle and the propagating flame front behind the obstacle. The local speed was found to increase from a circular to a triangular and a square obstacle. The mean flame speed was found to be less dependent on both the obstacle types and the different blockage ratios used.

  • This study describes the combustion characteristics under various condition of air excess ratio and ignition timing in a 2-valve SI optically accessible engine with swirl control valve(SCV). It adapted three different types of SCV(open ratio 72.5%, 78%, 59%) to strengthen a swirl flow. Pressure data were acquired using pressure sensor to investigate the effect of swirl flow on combustion, and from these pressure data, IMEP(indicated mean effective pressure) and MFB(mass fraction burnt) were calculated to explain burn rate and flame speed. From acquired flame images, we inspected the flame propagation direction, flame area, and flame centroid. Flame propagation direction showed different tendency between with/without SCV, and flame area with SCV was faster and larger than that of conventional engine. Finally, the representative flame images at each crank angle were acquired by PDF method to verify flame growth process. It is found that strengthened swirl flow is more beneficial for faster and stable combustion.

  • The lift-off characteristics of the triple flame within a diverging duct have been studied experimentally using a multi-slot burner, which can control the concentration gradient and the mean velocity independently. In this experiment the triple flame was stabilized successfully in lift-off condition and flame stabilization with a duct or without a duct, lift-off heights, and some other characteristics were examined for propane flame. It was examined that the effects with various concentration gradient and mean velocity on the triple flame. It was found that minimum value of the lift-off heights exist at a certain concentration gradient for constant mean velocity and flame with a duct is more stable than that without. Moreover the propagation velocity of the flame becomes maximum at a certain concentration gradient regardless of mean velocity.

  • In this investigation, turbulent premixed combustion and flame front propagation in a gas turbine combustion chamber is studied. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent reacting flows demands extremely high computational resources, especially in more complicated geometry. The alternative choice may be left for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) by which only large scales are solved directly. In combustion problems, capturing the large scales' behavior without solving the details of small scales is a difficult task. Using a transport equation for description of the flame front propagation and therefore avoiding the calculation of inner flame structure is the basic idea of this study. For this purpose. the so-called G-equation has been used by which any iso-level of the G variable provides the flame location. A comparison with the experiment indicates that the present method can predict a turbulent velocity field and also capture a instantaneous 3-dimensional flame structure.

Prediction of Flame Propagation Velocity based on the Behavior of Dust Particles (분진폭발의 입자거동을 고려한 화염전파속도의 예측)

  • Based on experimental study of lycopodium dust particles' behavior, we suggest the flame propagation model through dust clouds. With dust concentration, flame velocity reaches a maximum value at $170g/m^3$ to exceed the stoichometric concentration for lycopodium-air mixture combustion and decreases slightly in the richer side of $500g/m^3$. At $47{\sim}200g/m^3$, mean velocity of particle increases in proportion to flame velocity. As the sum of burning rate and particle velocity is approximate in flame velocity, the flame propagation velocity with lycopodium dust concentration can be estimated by the calculation and it was found that behavior of particles is useful for better understanding of dust flame propagation velocity.

Tumble flow motion and flame propagation in a SI engine (SI 엔진의 텀불 유동과 화염전파)

  • In this study, single cylinder engines with different tumble ratio were made to find out in-cylinder fluid motion and flame propagation. Tumble ratio derived from the steady state flow rig test. Flame propagation speed was obtained using cylinder head gasket ionization probe and the piston ionization probe. And the combustion pressure in cylinder was measured to analyze the combustion characteristics. In case of high tumble engine, BSFC and BSHC were decreased and BSNOx was increased at part load test. Also BMEP and combustion peak pressure was increased at full load test. Tumble flow motion had an great effects on initial burning period rather than main burning period in part load test.
