Experimental study is conducted to identify the existence of a shrinking flame disk and to clarify its flame characteristics through the inspection of critical mole fraction at flame extinction and edge flame oscillation at low strain rate flames. Experiments are made as varying global strain rate, velocity ratio, and burner distance. The transition from a shrinking flame disk to a flame hole is verified through gradient measurements of maximum flame temperature. The evidence of edge flame oscillation in flame disk is also provided through numerical simulation in microgravity. It is found at low strain rate flame disks in normal gravity that buoyancy effects are importantly contributing to lateral heat loss to burner rim, and is proven through critical mole fraction at flame extinction, edge flame oscillation, and measurements of flame temperature gradient along flame disk surface.

Experimental and numerical studies are conducted on the characteristics of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation in counterflow diffusion flames. The characteristics of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation are well described varying burner diameter, separation distance between two burners, global strain rate, and velocity ratio. It is verified numerically and experimentally that radial conduction heat loss significantly contributes to flame extinction and edge flame oscillation at low strain rate flames in zero- and micro-gravity. It is also shown that for appropriately small burner diameters flame extinction modes are grouped into four and these are significantly attributed to excessive radial conduction heat loss. The edge flame oscillation can be characterized well by one curve with Strouhal number and Peclet number.

The characteristics of lifted butane flames diluted with nitrogen have been investigated experimentally in order to elucidate the mechanism of individual flame oscillation modes. Flame oscillations in laminar free-jet lift-off flames are classified into the following five regimes: a stabilized lift-off regime (I), a heat-loss-induced oscillation (II), a buoyancy-induced oscillation along with a heat-loss-induced oscillation (III), a combined form of an oscillation prior to blow-out and a heat-loss-induced oscillation (IV), and a combination of an oscillation prior to blow-out and a buoyancy-induced oscillation along with a heat-loss-induced oscillation (V). The characterization of the individual flame oscillations modes are presented and discussed using Strouhal numbers and their relevant parameters by the analysis of the power spectrum for temporal variation of the lift-off height.
The dynamic behaviors of counterflow non-premixed flame have been investigated experimentally to study effects of heat losses and Lewis number on edge flame oscillation, which result from the advancing and retreating edge flame motion of outer flame edge at low strain rate flame. For low strain rate flame, lateral conduction heat loss in addition to radiation heat loss could be more remarkable than the others. Oscillatory instabilities appear at fuel Lewis number greater than unity. But excessive lateral conduction heat loss causes edge flame instability even at fuel Lewis number less than unity. The excessive heat loss caused by the smaller burner diameter in which the flame length is an indicator of lateral conduction heat loss extends the region of flame oscillation and accelerates oscillatory instability in comparison to the previous study with the burner diameter of 26mm. Extinction behaviors quite different from the previous study are also addressed.

Reignition as special cases of acoustic pressure responses of flame are numerically studied by employing methanol droplet flame as a laminar flamelet. Quasi-steady flame responses occur in the range of small amplitude, low frequency oscillation. Reignition phenomena can occur when, by increasing the frequency of large amplitude acoustic pressure, the magnitude of characteristic acoustic time is the same order of that of characteristic reaction time of flames. And more increasing of amplitude of acoustic pressure induces the direct extinction of flame. Flame can sustain its own intensity even under the steady extinction temperature in case of high frequency acoustic oscillation, and this tendency is remarkable with increasing frequency. Reignition regime with respect to amplitude and frequency of acoustic pressure doesn't exist in low frequency($10^2$ Hz, in this study), but broadens with frequency of acoustic pressure.

A Experimental study on flame extinction behavior was investigated using He curtain flow with counter triple co-flow burner. Buoyancy force was suppressed up to a microgravity level of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}g$ by using He curtain flow. The stability maps were provided with a functional dependency of diluent mole fraction and global strain rate to clarify the differences in flame extinction behavior. The flame extinction curves had C-shapes at various global strain rates. The oscillation and extinction modes were different each other in terms of the global strain rate, and the flames extinction modes could be classified into five modes such as (I) and (II): an extinction through the shrinkage of the outmost edge flame forward the flame center after self-excitation and without self-excitation, respectively, (III): an extinction through rapid advancement of a flame hole while the outmost edge flame is stationary, (IV): self-excitation occurs in the outermost edge flame and the center edge flame and then a donut shaped flame is formed and/or the flame is entirely extinguished, (V): shrinkage of the outermost edge flame without self-excitation followed by shrinkage or survival of the center flame. These oscillation and extinction modes could be identified well to the behavior of edge flame. The result also showed that the edge flame was influenced significantly by the conductive heat losses to the flame center or ambient He curtain flow.

The characteristics of lifted laminar propane flames diluted with nitrogen have been investigated experimentally to elucidate self-excitation and the effects of flame curvature. Flame oscillation modes are classified as follows: oscillation induced by heat loss, a combination of oscillations induced by heat loss and buoyancy, and a combination of the oscillations induced by heat loss and diffusive thermal instability. It is shown that the oscillation induced only by heat loss is not relevant to the diffusive thermal instability and hydrodynamic instability caused by buoyancy; this oscillation is observed under all lift-off flame conditions irrespective of the fuel Lewis number. These experimental evidences are displayed through the analysis of the power spectrum for the temporal variation of lift-off height. The possible mechanism of the oscillation induced by heat loss is also discussed.
An experimental study investigates the flame response characteristics of jet-diffusion flame and premixed flame. The experiment was conducted while varying the amplitude. Flame lengths were quantified for OH chemiluminescence measurement and compared with the result of the flame transfer function. Flame length and flame velocity perturbation were normalized and compared with the result of the flame transfer function. The comparison results appear that velocity perturbation and flame length oscillation of premixed flame show linear behaviors on the other hand jet-diffusion flame, amplitudes are more thant 0.20, shows nonlinear behaviors of flame velocity perturbation and flame length oscillation.

Combustion instability is a common phenomenon in a ducted flame burner and is known as accompanying low frequency oscillation. This is due to the interaction between unsteady heat release rate and sound pressure field, that is, thermoacoustic feedback. In Rayleigh criterion, combustion instability is triggered when the heat additions is in phase with acoustic oscillation. A Rijke type burner with a pre-mixed flame is built for investigating the effect of Reynolds number and equivalence ratio on thermoacoustic oscillation. In addition, the effect of wall temperature is presented. The results suggest that the frequency of max. oscillation is dependent on Reynolds number and equivalence ratio whereas its magnitude is not a strong function of these two parameters. On the other hand, the wall temperature distribution has much strong effects on the oscillation, even creates different mode of acoustic resonance.
