Experiments on corresponding jet flames with stagnant point diffusion flames have been carried out in initial injection periods. A compensated measurement of maximum flame temperature, which is based on the ion signal, has been employed to inspect flame responses to time-varying strain rates. The flame responses are obtained at two conditions for the slowly time-varying strain rate and the case of flame extinction, and analyzed to confirm similarity between a stagnant point diffusion flame and an evolving jet diffusion flame. Nonsteady effects are addressed via the comparison between several time scales. The time variation with low strain rates, in which illustrates the flame behavior of the upper branch far from extinction in the well-known S-curve, is confirmed to produce a quasi-steady flame response through the nonsteady experiments. The time variation with strain rates in the case of flame extinction indicates an unsteady effect of flame response. It is therefore found that the flame responses near jet tip depend on time histories of characterized strain rates in the developing process.
A light collecting probe named Multi-color Integrated Cassegrain Receiving Optics (MICRO) is applied to spark-ignited spherical spray flames to obtain the flame propagation speed in freely falling droplet suspension produced by an ultrasonic atomizer. Two MICRO probes are used to monitor time-series signals of OH chemiluminescence from two different locations in the flame. By detecting the arrival time difference of the propagating flame front, the flame propagation speed is calculated with a two-point delay-time method. In addition, time-series images of OH chemiluminescence are simultaneously obtained by a high-speed digital CCD camera to ensure the validity of the two-point delay-time method by the MICRO system. Furthermore, the relationship between the spray properties measured by phase Doppler anemometer (PDA) and the flame propagation speed are discussed with three different experimental conditions by changing the fuel injection rate. It was confirmed that the two-point delay-time method with two MICRO probes is useful and convenient to obtain the flame propagation speed and that the flame propagation speed depends on the spray properties.
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the flame retardant performance of Japanese cypress(Chamaecyparis obtusa) plywood, commonly used in indoor decoration, furniture, and tableware, by treating it with three different fire retardants with different primary ingredients. The experiment was conducted in compliance with Article 31, Paragraph 2 of the Enforcement Decree of the Fire Facilities Installation and Management Act and Articles 4 and 7-2 of the Flame Retardant Performance Standards. After flame time, after glow time, char length, and char area were measured. As a result, first, after flame time was measured at 0 seconds regardless of whether the flame retardant treatment was applied. Second, after glow time was relatively long, measuring 22.7 seconds without treatment, which is likely due to the weak fire resistance and high concentration of carbon monoxide generated by the chemical characteristics of the Japanese cypress itself. Third, it was confirmed that the effects of the primary ingredient, phosphorus, in the flame retardant treatment varied depending on the technological development of the manufacturers of the same species of Japanese cypress plywood. In the future, it is expected that the results of this study will provide fundamental data to select flame retardant treatments that show high flame retardant performance according to the botanical characteristics of the wood.

The characteristics of NOx emissions in pure hydrogen nonpremixed flames with coaxial air are analyzed numerically for the three model cases of coaxial air flames classified by varying coaxial air velocity and/or fuel velocity. In coaxial air flames, the flame length is reduced by coaxial air and can be represented as a function of the ratio of coaxial air to fuel velocity. Coaxial air decreases flame reaction zone, resulting in reducing flame residence time significantly. Finally, the large reduction of EINOx is achieved by the decrease of the flame residence time. It is found that because coaxial air can break down the flame self-similarity law, appropriate scaling parameters, which are different from those in the simple jet flames, are recommended. In coaxial air flames, the flame residence time based on the flame volume produces better results than that based on a cube of the flame length. And some portion of deviations from the 1/2 scaling law by coaxial air may be due to the violation of the linear relationship between the flame volume and the flame reaction zone.
The flame retardancy, such as carbonized length and area, of four plank type wood products by the spreading concentration and impregnation time of flame retardant were measured according to standard of the Nation Fire Agency in Republic of Korea. To measure the flame retardancy, Korean pine plywood, Japanese larch plywood, Japanese cypress planks, and perforated birch plywood boards were treated with self-development flame retardant by 300 and 500 g/㎡ spreading concentration and those were compared with control specimen. In general, the flame retardant performance of wood products improved as the spreading concentration of flame retardant increased. Except for Japanese larch plywood, there was no significant difference in the flame retardant performance by the spreading concentration. The flame retardant performance of perforated birch plywood board was positively correlated up to 60 minutes of impregnation time, but then gradually decreased. These results about the flame retardancy of wood products by spreading concentration and impregnation time were expected to be basic data for improving flame-retardant treated wood.
Main purpose of the current paper is to show results of time lag analysis using phase information of flame transfer function in order to predict combustion instabilities in a gas turbine combustor. The flame transfer function (FTF) is modeled using a commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code (Fluent). Comparisons of the modeled flame shapes with the measured ones were made using the optimized heat transfer conditions and combustion models. The FTF modeling results show a quite good agreement with the measurement data in predicting the phase delay (i.e. time lag). Time lag analysis results using the phase of FTF shows better combustion instability prediction accuracy than using time lag calculated from the steady state flame length.
The flame lengths and NOx emission characteristics of syngas $H_2$/CO turbulent non-premixed jet flames were investigated. The flame length which is the main parameter governs NOx emission was studied for various syngas compositions. The flame length was compared with previous correlation between Froude number and flame height and it shows that they have good agreements. It was confirmed that the turbulent jet flames herein investigated are in the region of buoyancy-momentum transition. NOx emission was reduced with increased Reynolds number and CO contents in syngas fuel and with decreased fuel nozzle diameter which is attributed by decreased flame residence time. Previous EINOx scaling based on flame residence time of $L_f^3/(d_f^2U_f)$ satisfies only the jet flame in momentum-dominated region, not buoyancy-momentum transition region. The simplified flame residence time ($L_f/U_f$) was adopted in modified EINOx scaling. The modified scaling satisfies the jet flames not only in momentum-dominated region but in buoyancy-momentum transition region. The scaling is also satisfied with $H_2$/CO syngas jet flames.
In order to obtain the flame Propagation speed in freely falling droplet suspension Produced by an ultrasonic atomizer, a light collecting probe named Multi-color Integrated Cassegrain Receiving Optics (MICRO) is applied to spark-ignited spherical spray flames. Two MICRO probes are used to monitor time-series signals of OH chemilumine-scence from two different locations in the flame. The flame propagation speed is calculated by detecting the arrival time difference of the propagating flame front. In addition, time-series images of OH chemiluminescence are simultaneously obtained by a high-speed digital CCD camera to ensure the validity of the MICRO system. Furthermore, relationship between the spray properties measured by phase Doppler anemometer (PDA) and the flame propagation speed are discussed with k different experimental conditions by changing the fuel injection rate. It was confirmed that the MICRO probe system was very useful and convenient to obtain the flame propagation speed and that the flame propagation speed was different depending on the spray properties.

In this study, the NOx formation characteristics of one-dimensional $CH_4$/Air premixed flame using detailed-kinetic chemistry are examined numerically. The combustor length and the amount of heat loss are varied to investigate the effect of residence time and heat loss on the NOx formation in a post-flame region. In the flame region, NO is mainly produced by the Prompt NO mechanism including $N_2$O-intermediate NO mechanism over all equivalence ratios. However, thermal NO mechanism is more important than Prompt NO mechanism in the post-flame region. In the case of adiabatic condition, the increase of combustor length causes the remarkable increase of NO emission at the exit due to the increase of residence time. On the other hand, NO reaches the equilibrium state in the vicinity of flame region, considering radiation and conduction heat losses. Furthermore the NO, in the case of $\phi$=1.2, is gradually reduced in the downstream region as the heat loss is increased. From these results, it can be concluded that the controls of residence time and heat loss in a combustor should be recognized as an important NOx reduction technology.
The curing behavior, mechanical properties, hot-air aging resistance, abrasion properties, thermal properties, etc., of EVM/EPM/APP (ammonium polyphosphate)/DPER (dipentaerythritol)/EG (expandable graphite) and EVM/EPM/ATH (aluminium trihydroxide) flame retarding systems in ethylene vinyl acetate rubber (EVM) blends with EPM (ethylene propylene rubber) were sequentially examined. For both flame retarding systems, the torque values increased with the content of EPM rubber and with the vulcanization time. As the content of EPM rubber increased, the scorch time became shorter, whereas the optimum cure time followed an increasing trend. For the EVM/EPM/APP/DPER/EG flameretarding system, as the content of EPM rubber increased, the hardness did not change, whereas the tensile strength and elongation at break decreased. A hot-air aging resistance test at $150^{\circ}C$ showed that the heat resistance decreased with the EPM content regardless of the kinds and contents of flame retardants. As the EPM content increased, the abrasion rate became higher and the abrasion resistance of the EVM/EPM/APP/DPER/EG flame retarding systems exceeded that of the EVM/EPM/ATH flame retarding counterparts. In comparison with the EVM/EPM/ATH flame retarding systems, the thermal stability of the EVM/EPM/APP/DPER/EG flame retarding system showed an increasing tendency.
