  • The majority of both small and large-scale experiments on gas explosion have been carried out in the explosion instruments with cylindrical tubes of a high length/diameter ratio and vessels of a high height/length ratio, focusing on investigating the interaction between propagating flame and obstacles inside the tubes or vessels. The results revealed that there is a strong interaction between the propagating flame and turbulence formed after the flame passes the obstacle. However this paper focuses on analyzing the pressure impact or profile outside the vent in vented gas explosion in a partially confined chamber by performing gas explosion experiments in a reduced-scale experimental assembly properly constructed. This study has considered eight different cases in gas explosion based on variation of three kinds of parameters such as height of vessel, shape of the vent and vent size, and reveals that the large vessel with big size circle vent is more danger to the target than others because the overpressure is spread out faraway horizontally and vertically.

  • Jet-A spray, evaporation and combustion were numerically analyzed in annular type model combustor using KIVA-3V. Liquid fuel's atomizing was affected by flow field near droplet. When cooling flow was not optimized, SMD was increased, and equivalence ratio was horizontally distributed in combustor's downstream. Flame spread out horizontally and separated in combustors downstream. Flame center was separated by cooling flow. Flame separation made local high temperature in downstream that caused NO increase.

  • In this paper, the heat loss to the constant volume vessel wall was investigated using instantaneous heat flux sensor, schlieren visualization, pressure rise curve. And the heat loss characteristics of plasma jet ignition were compared with conventional spark ignition. In case of plasma jet ignition, the flame kernel moves toward the center of combustion vessel in the initial period of combustion, and the flame surface spread out to the vessel wall. However, in case of conventional spark ignition, the flame surface contact with combustion vessel wall in the initial period of combustion. As a result, heat loss in the combustion duration for conventional spark ignition increase faster than that of plasma jet ignition. And the combustion enhancement rate of plasma jet ignition is higher than that of conventional spark ignition, and it was found that the heat loss rate is inversely proportional to the combustion enhancement rate.

  • Summary of experiments for the investigation of a fire which caused an upward fire spread for over 12 floors through balconies in a high-rise apartment complex is reported. The experiments include indoor tests to obtain fire properties of vertical PMMA fences and outdoor ones with a full scale model of the balcony. The test results suggest significance of the increase of total flame height by the merging of flames and a cooperative effect of the burning of the PMMA fence and combustibles on the balconies for the generation of a tall flame enough to cause ignition on the upper floors.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of wind speed and direction on building fires using GIS and a CFD model. We conducted numerical simulations for a fire event that occurred at an apartment in Ulsan on October 8, 2020. For realistic simulations, we used the profiles of wind speeds and directions and temperatures predicted by the local data assimilation and prediction system (LDAPS). First, using the realistic boundary conditions, we conducted two numerical simulations (a control run, CNTL, considered the building fire and the other assumed the same conditions as CNTL except for the building fire). Then, we conducted the additional four simulations with the same conditions as CNTL except for the inflow wind speeds and direction. When the ignition point was located on the windward of the building, strong updraft induced by the fire had a wide impact on the building roof and downwind region. The evacuation floor (15th floor) played a role to spread fire to the downwind wall of the building. The weaker the wind speed, the narrower fire spread around the ignition point, but the higher the flame above the building reaches. When the ignition point was located on the downwind wall of the building, the flame didn't spread to the upwind wall of the building. The results showed that wind speed and direction were important for the flow and temperature (or flame) distribution around a firing building.

  • The smouldering combustion of cellulose Insulation treated with boric acid - borax - aluminium sulfate as combustion retardants are examined by candle type combustibility tester. The flammability behavior of combustion process is LOI, Smouldering region, Smouldering, Flamming spread region and Flame spread region. In this experiment, Particle size of four examined LOI, L.Point, H.Point, at the biggest size show high LOI. The surface area is connected with thermal conduction. The phenomena of combustion transition are governed by quantity of combustible gas generation in heating zone of cellulose insulation.

  • Atrium being on fire, the flame is spread vertically, the methods of fire protection and the standards of security are different respectively. Therefore, in the case of atrium, it has many problems on the fire protection and the application of statute according to the space properties. So it is important to analysis, atrium being on fire, fire properties to space properties. From these points of view, the purpose of this study is to analysis the fire properties of atrium .

  • In this study we investigated the materials which locate in the subway station and train cars. We checked the flammability of the materials such as the signboard, newspaper, wide color film etc. We reported some kind of the data such as oxygen index, optical smoke density, surface flame spread speed for that materials. We hope this data will be help to decide the guideline for such materials.

  • In this study we reported the Smoke Density, the Toxicity, the Flame Spread Characteristics and the Oxygen Index of the FRP composite interior panels for raicars. Also investigated the test codes of the concerning items of other countries. We made some samples to the variance of resin types, surface finishing methods and panel shapes. It's not the really used ones but may help us effectively to guess the fire safety characteristics of railcars.
