  • Characteristics of turbulent lifted flames in coflow jets with the varying initial temperature have recently been investigated about only propane case diluted by nitrogen. The investigation has firstly improved a premixed flame model and a large scale mixing model among competing theories on the stabilization mechanism of turbulent flame to be suitable for a high temperature condition. In this research, about methane with good availability to apply for a practical combustor as clean fuel, its characteristics of turbulent nonpremixed flame have been studied experimentally. The results have shown an effectiveness of the premixed flame model and the large scale mixing model considered initial temperature variation. Additionally, considering the axial distance where the mean fuel concentration falls below the stoichiometric level along the center line of the jet according to diluting nitrogen, the premixed flame model have more accurately been improved.

  • An experiment was performed to investigate lift-off, blow-off and combustion characteristics of a lifted coaxial diffusion flame according to fuel jet and air velocity. A jet diffusion flame which is attached on the nozzle rim begins to be lifted with increase of air velocity, and finally becomes blow-off at higher air velocity. In experiment, blow-off limit increased with increase of fuel jet velocity, however lift-off occurred at lower air velocity. Flame structure and combustion characteristics were examined by schlieren photos, temperature distributions and emission concentration distributions. Flame temperature became higher at midstream and its RMS became larger at up and downstream with increase of air velocity. Local NO concentration decreased but $CO_2$concentration increased with increase of air velocity, which shows combustion reaction becomes close to be stoichiometric at higher air velocity in spite of lift-off.

  • Characteristics of lifted flame for highly diluted propane with nitrogen in high temperature coflowing air have been experimentally investigated, and the stabilization mechanism of lifted flame in high temperature air coflow have been proposed. As the coflow temperature increases, the liftoff height of flame decreased due to the increase of stoichiometry laminar burning velocity. At same coflow temperature, the difference of liftoff height between the fuel mole fractions has been disappeared by scaling the liftoff velocity with stoichiometry laminar burning velocity. It has been found that lifted flame can be stabilized for even smaller fuel velocity than stoichiometry laminar burning velocity. This can be attributed to buoyancy effect and the liftoff velocity characteristics for coflow temperature support it.

  • This study has numerically investigated the flame structure and emission characteristics in the metal fiber burner. The one-dimensional premixed flame approach has been adopted to simulate the combustion processes of the metal fiber burner. Numerical results indicate that the present approach is capable of predicting the essential combustion characteristics of the metal fiber burner. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the effects of equivalence ratio and thermal load on the precise flame structure and the pollutant emission in the metal fiber burner.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the influence of inert gas on the configuration characteristics of premixed turbulent propagating flames of hydrogen mixtures. Inert gas is changed to $N_2$, Ar, $CO_2$ and He keeping the laminar burning velocity of mixtures nearly the same value. A laser tomography technique was used to obtain the flame shape, and quantitative analyses were performed. The result shows that in the wrinkled laminar flame region, the surface area of turbulent flame is slightly dependent on the equivalence ratio and the kind of inert gas. It is also shown the region of convex part of flame toward the unburned gas is greater than that of toward the burned gas regardless of the kind of inert gas.

  • Extinction characteristics of the two interacting premixed flames are analyzed for the effects of flame stretch and preferential diffusion using large activation energy asymptotic analysis by adopting counterflow system as a model problem. Results show that the flammable limit of the thermally interacting premixed flames is extended compared to the single flame, and the extinction mechanism is classified into weak and strong interactions. As the lewis number of the deficient species increases, the region of strong interaction diminishes which can explain the different characteristics of the extinction boundaries of the lean (rich) methane/air and butane/air flames. The influence of the flame stretch to the interaction boundaries is also studied.

  • This work is to investigate the combustion characteristics and flame propagation of the LPG (liquified petroleum gas) and gasoline fuel. In order to characterize the combustion processes of the fuels, the flame propagation and combustion characteristics were investigated by using a constant volume combustion chamber The flame propagation of both LPG and gasoline fuels was investigated by the laser deflection method and the high-speed Schlieren photography. The result of laser deflection method show that the error of measured flame propagation speed by laser method is less than 5% compared with the result of high-speed camera. The flame propagation speed of the fuel is increased with the decrease of initial pressure and the increase of initial temperature in the constant volume chamber. The results also show that the equivalence ratio has a grate effect on the flame speed, combustion pressure and the combustion duration of the fuel-air mixture.

  • The NOx emission characteristics of DME in counterflow nonpremixed flames were investigated numerically, and brief experiments were carried out to compare the flame shapes and NOx emissions with those of $C_{3}H_{8}$ and $C_{2}H_{6}$. The DME flames were calculated using Kaiser's mechanism, while the $C_{2}H_{6}$ flames were calculated using the $C_3$ mechanism. These mechanisms were combined with the modified Miller-Bowman mechanism for the analysis of NOx. Experimental results show that DME flame has the characteristics of partial premixed flame and the flame length becomes very shorter compared with general hydrocarbon fuels and then, the NOx emission of DME is low as much as 60 % of $C_{3}H_{8}$. In the calculated results of counterflow nonpremixed flames, the $EI_{NO}$ of DME nonpremixed flame is low as much as 50 % of the $C_{2}H_{6}$ nonpremixed flame. The cause of $EI_{NO}$ reduction is attributed mainly to the characteristics of partial premixed flame due to the existence of O atom in DME and partly to the O-C bond in DME, instead of C-C bond in hydrocarbon fuels.

  • An experiment using high preheated air in a turbulent non-premixed flame was performed to investigate the effects of high preheated air on the combustion characteristics. Combustion using high preheated and diluted air with flue gas is a new technology which enables NO emission to be reduced. In this study, Na was used as diluent and propane as fuel. Combustion characteristics, especially the distributions of the flame temperature, NO concentration and OH radical intensity were examined under the condition of 300 K, 600 K, 1000 K in terms of the combustion air temperature, and also under the condition of the dilution level from 21% to 13% in terms of oxygen concentration. As the preheated air temperature increased, it appeared that the flame length became shorter, maximum flame temperature increased, the reaction region moved to upstream, and NO concentration increased, but the flame temperature's fluctuation was reduced. In opposite, it was shown with decrement of oxygen concentration at the maximum temperature that both maximum value and the gradient of the flame temperature decreased, and NO emission also decreased considerably, but its fluctuation became larger, being inclined to be unstable.
