Graphite spheroidization and scaling resistance of cast iron containing 5-10% Al were investigated. It is impossible to obtain spheroidal graphite in cast iron containing Al with 8 % and over, but possible to obtain spheroidal graphite even in cast iron with an Al content of about 10 % by increasing Si content. In the scaling test carried out under the heating condition of $950^{\circ}C$ in air for total of 50 hours, the scaling resistance of cast iron containing Al with 8 % and over was remarkably superior, and also spheroidal graphite cast iron was superior to flake graphite cast iron. The scale became thinner more compacts and more protective with increasing Al content.
The 2-step manufacturing method consisting of preforming and stamping processes was developed to manufacture composite bipolar plates for PEMFCs. The preform was composed of expanded graphite, graphite flake and phenol resin. Precuring conditions were optimized by checking the electrical conductivity, flexural strength and microstructure. Precuring temperature ($100^{\circ}C$) slightly above the melting point of phenol powders ($90^{\circ}C$) induced moderate curing, but also prevented excessive curing. Preforms utilizing the tangled structure of expanded graphite were easily fabricated at low pressure of 0.07-0.28MPa. The proper precuring time, 5min, was determined to fabricate the preform stably because insufficient and excessive precuring deteriorated the flexural strength of composite bipolar plates.

In this study, two types of die material cast iron was treated for surface hardening by using high power diode laser to improve mechanical properties of die which is using as essential production technology in the parts manufacturing in virtually all the infrastructure industries now. First of all, the heat treatment characteristics of FCD550 material which is spheroidal graphite cast iron, and through the heat treatment of HCI350 material which is flake graphite cast iron, the heat treatment characteristics of the two materials were compared. The hardness of hardened zone increased over 3 times over base material for both specimens, but as for required heat input, HCI350 was higher than FCD550 material depending on the heat conductivity of the materials by the content amount and shape of graphite contained in the material.

The objective of the experiment is to investigate the effect of microstructures of gray cast iron oil wear characteristics of automotive disc brakes. Six different gray cast iron rotors were manufactured by changing carbon equivalent and cooling rate. The change of DTV (disc thickness variation) before and after wear tests was measured to examine the wear properties according to the microstructures of gray iron discs since the DTV generation is caused by the circumferential uneven wear. Experimental results showed that the morphology of graphite flake and hardness in gray cast iron were crucially associated with the change of DTV. In particular, the DTV changes of rotor decrease when the length and area fraction of graphite flake in brake rotors increase and hardness of brake discs reduces.
Flake graphite cast irons with the high damping capacity have been used for the control of vibration and noise occuring in the members of various mechanical structures under vibrating conditions. However, the damping capacity which is morphological characteristics of graphite is one of the important factors in reducing the vibration and noise, but hardly any work has deal with this problem. Therefore, the authors have examined the damping capacity of various cast irons with alloying elements and studied the influences of the matrix, mechanical properties and morphological characteristics of graphite. The main results obtained are as follows: Effects of Ni on the damping capacities and mechanical properties are investigated in 3.9%C-0.3% Cu gray cast iron. At 0.2% Ni content, specific damping capacity showed the maximum value, and decreased with further increase in Ni content, Graphite continuity also showed same behavior. This indicates that the specific damping capacity has a close relation with graphite continuity. On the other hand, the damping capacity in pearlite matrix showed superior to that in ferrite. In contrast, with increasing the Ni content, both tensile strength and hardness increased due to the decrease of graphite length and eutectic cell size.

ZrO$_2$ coated flake graphite powders were prepared by the controlled hydrolysis of zirconium oxichloride. The stirring process plays an important role in the coating process. There are two types of coated ZrO$_2$ particles: (a)primary particles with few nm size were obtained by the direct formation of the shell by precipitation of the surface of the graphite and (b) Secondary particles of ZrO$_2$ with ∼0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$ size were obtained by the independent formation of primary particles ZrO$_2$ and subsequent heterocoagulation at the graphites surface.
A composite material was prepared for the bipolar plates of phosphoric acid fuel cells(PAFC) by hot pressing a flake type natural graphite powder as a filler material and a fluorine resin as a binder. Average particle sizes of the powders were 610.3, 401.6, 99.5, and $37.7{\mu}m$. The density of the composite increased from 2.25 to $2.72g/cm^3$ as the graphite size increased from 37.7 to $610.3{\mu}m$. The anisotropy ratio of the composite increased from 1.8 to 490.9 as the graphite size increased. The flexural strength of the composite decreased from 15.60 to 8.94MPa as the graphite size increased. The porosity and the resistivity of the composite showed the same tendencies, and decreased as the graphite size increased. The lowest resistivity and porosity of the composite were $1.99{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}cm$ and 2.02 %, respectively, when the graphite size was $401.6{\mu}m$. The flexural strength of the composite was 10.3MPa when the graphite size was $401.6{\mu}m$. The lowest resistance to electron mobility was well correlated with the composite with lowest porosity. It was possible the flaky large graphite particles survive after the hot pressing process.
In efforts to characterize and understand the properties and processing of phenylethynyl-terminated imide (LaRC PETI-5, simply referred to as PETI-5) oligomers and polymers as a high-temperature sizing material for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites, PETI-5 imidization and thermal curing behaviors have been extensively investigated based on the phenylethynyl end-group reaction. These studies are reviewed here. In addition, the use of PETI-5 to enhance interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and a bismaleimide (BMI) matrix, as well as the dynamic mechanical properties of carbon/BMI composites, are discussed. Reports on the thermal expansion behavior of intercalated graphite flake, and the effects of exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP) on the properties of PETI-5 matrix composites are also reviewed. The dynamic mechanical and thermal properties and the electrical resistivity of xGnP/PETI-5 composites are characterized. The effect of liquid rubber amine-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (ATBN)-coated xGnP particles incorporated into epoxy resin on the toughness of xGnP/epoxy composites is examined in terms of its impact on Izod strength. This paper provides an extensive overview from fundamental studies on PETI-5 and xGnP, as well as applied studies on relevant composite materials.
Effects of the amount of flake type graphite, morphology and (V,Mo)carbides on the specific damping capacity of austenitic low thermal expansion cast irons were investigated. Specific damping capacity(SDC) of low thermal expansion cast irons increased with the increased amount of graphite. Specific damping capacity of low thermal expansion cast iron decreased with the increased Young's modulus. In the case of V and Mo addition, SDC decreased with the increased amount of carbides. Specific damping capacity increased about 2% by the movement of magenetic domains which appeared in ferromagnetic materials.
