Prediction of Service Life of a Respirator Cartridge by the Occupational Environment -Simulation of Breakthrough Curve for Respirator Cartridge and Sampling Tube- (작업현장의 환경조건에 따른 방독마스크 정화통의 수명예측 -모사에 의한 정화통과 샘플관의 파과시간-)

  • To predict the service life of an organic vapor respirator cartridge, the breakthrough curve of respirator was simulated using a fixed-bed adsorption model and compared with that of sampling tube. And the effects of bed porosity, length to diameter ratio and flow rate of the sampling tube were studied. The life time of respirator cartridge was increased with the decrease of particle size and bed porosity. And the breakthrough time of sampling tube was affected by the flow rate, however not by the length to diameter ratio. The 10% breakthrough time of the sampling tube was corresponded with that of cartridge.

Adsorption Characteristics of Activated Carbon Prepared From Waste Citrus Peels by NaOH Activation (NaOH 활성화법으로 제조한 폐감귤박 활성탄의 흡착특성)

  • The activated carbon was prepared from waste citrus peels using NaOH. With the increase of NaOH ratio, iodine adsorptivity and specific surface area of the activated carbon prepared were increased, but activation yield was decreased. The optimal condition of activation was at 300% NaOH and $700^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hr. For the activated carbon produced under optimal condition, iodine adsorptivity was 1,006 mg/g, specific surface area was $1,356 m^2/g$, and average pore diameter was $20{\sim}25{\AA}$. From the adsorption experiment for benzene vapor in fixed bed reactor, it was found that the adsorption capacity of activated carbon prepared from waste citrus peel was higher than that of activated carbon purchased from Calgon company. This result implied that the activated carbon prepared from waste citrus peel could be used for gas phase adsorption.

  • Adsorption characteristics of $CO_2$ on activated carbons were evaluated using dynamic adsorption method in a fixed bed with acid treatment, LiOH impregnation and water vapor supply. Physical and chemical properties of the activated carbons were measured using SEM, EDS, nitrogen adsorption, FTIR and XRD. Nitric acid treatment led to the decrease in BET surface area and the increase in oxygen content of virgin activated carbon, and it produced a new functional group that included nitrogen. For the reduction of BET surface area by LiOH impregnation, the nitric acid treated activated carbon (NAC) was less than the virgin activated carbon (AC). Large particles of LiOH were present on the carbon surface when the content of LiOH was over 2 wt%. The adsorbed amount of $CO_2$ on activated carbon in a fixed bed increased with the acid treatment, LiOH impregnation and water vapor supply. The XRD results indicated that LiOH was converted to $Li_2CO_3$ after the adsorption of $CO_2$ on LiOH precursor.

  • Toluene of aromatic compounds, MEK of ketones and IPA of alcohols were extremely used as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) on the getting into step with industrial process. The adsorption characteristics of three component solvent vapors (Toluene-MEK-IPA) on the activated carbonaceous adsorbents such as AC, ACF and AC+ACF were investigated in a stainless steel fixed bed adsorption experimental apparatus in order to identify those carbons for eliminating and recovering solvent vapors from industrial emission sources. The used activated carbonaceous adsorbents were pelletized commercial activated carbon and activated carbon fiber. The breakthrough curves and adsorption capacity have been obtained at atmospheric pressure in a adsorption fixed bed. It has been found that non-polar and larger molecules have been adsorbed better than polar and smaller molecules. Especially, alcohols and ketones were poorly adsorbed due to competitive adsorbability in ternary mixture system. However, it could be overcome by employment of activated carbonaceous adsorbent which have different porosity distribution appropriately.

  • The breakthrough curves of a sampling tube were studied to predict the service life of a respirator cartridge for organic vapors. The fixed bed adsorption model was applied to respirator cartridge and it's variables were calculated from tile experiment of sampling tube. By the experiment and simulation, it was possible to predict the service life of a respirator cartridge, however, not adequate at low $CCl_4$ concentration less than 700ppm and at high air humidify. The breakthrough curves of sampling tube were irregular compare to that of respirator cartridge due to .packing density.

  • This study aims to examine absorption characteristics of toluene, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), ethyl acetate (EA), and ternary-compounds, all of which are widely used in industrial processes, by means of four types of commercial activated carbon substances. It turned out that among the three types of volatile organic compounds, the breakthrough point of activated carbon and that of IPA, whose affinity was the lowest, were the lowest, and then that of EA and that of toluene in the order. With the breakthrough point of IPA, which was the shortest, as the standard, changes in the breakthrough points of unary-compounds, binary-compounds, and ternary-compounds were examined. As a result, it turned out that the larger the number of elements, the lower the breakthrough point. This resulted from competitive adsorption, that is, substitution of substances with a low level of affinity with those with a high level of affinity. Hence, the adsorption of toluene-IPA-EA and ternary-compounds require a design of the activated carbon bed based on the breakthrough of IPA, and in the design of activated carbon beds in actual industries as well, a substance whose level of affinity is the lowest needs to be the standard.

Biodiesel Production with Zinc Aluminate Catalysts in a High-Pressure-Fixed-Bed-Reactor (Zinc Aluminate 촉매를 이용한 고압연속식 고정층 반응기에서의 바이오디젤 제조)

  • In this study, the effect of reaction conditions on the transesterification of soybean oil and methanol was investigated in a high-pressure-fixed-bed-reactor-system with zinc aluminate catalysts. Without catalysts, high-pressure-reaction at $300^{\circ}C$ and 1,200 psi brought 19% yields of methyl esters, which was caused by the approach of reaction condition to supercritical point of methanol. However, except the specific reaction condition, the yields in the reaction with no catalyst were very low below 4.5%. The zinc aluminate was prepared as catalyst by coprecipitation and characterized with $N_2$ gas adsorption/desorption and X-ray diffraction. With catalyst, the effect of the reaction parameters such as temperature, pressure, and molar ratio of reactants on biodiesel production was demonstrated. The higher temperature, pressure, and methanol molar ratio to soybean oil, the more yields of methyl esters. It was proved that among the reaction parameters, the reaction temperature be the most influential variable on methyl ester yields.

Comparison of Adsorption Characteristics on Zeolite 13X and Silica-aluminar (제올라이트 13X와 실리카-알루미나의 흡착특성 비교)

  • This work is to compare the experiment results by a continuous fixed-bed adsorption of water vapor, acetone vapor, and toluene vapor on zeolite 13X (SAU) and silica-alumina (SAK). SAU and SAK have very different pore structure but similar composition as inorganic adsorbent. The relationship between the equilibrium adsorption capacity and specific pore size range were studied. Adsorption of water vapor was more suitable on SAU than SAK because SAU has relatively more developed pores around $5\;\AA$ than SAK in the pore range of $10\sim100\;\AA$. Adsorption of acetone vapor was more suitable on SAK than SAU because SAK has relatively more developed pores around $5\sim10\;\AA$ than SAK in the pore range of less than $10\;\AA$. Adsorption of toluene vapor was more suitable on SAK than SAU because SAK has relatively more developed pores in the pore range of $10\sim100\;\AA$ than SAK. Adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was closely related to the surface area generated in the specific pore size region. But it was difficult to distinguish the relationships between adsorption capacity and micro area, and the external surface area of adsorbent.
