Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of treadmill gait trainig on dynamic balance and gait functions in stroke patients. Design: Randomized, double-blind, controlled pilot study. Methods: Four subjects following first stroke participated in this study. They were divided randomly into the treadmill gait trainig group (TM group) (n=2) and the control group (n=2). Subjects in both groups received general training five times per week. Subjects in the TM group practiced an additional treadmill gait trainig program that consisted of 60 minutes, three times per week, during a period of four weeks. Timed up and go test (dynamic balance) and the GAITRite test (gait function) were evaluated before and after the intervention. Results: In dynamic balance (timed up and go test), the TM group (-14.235 sec) showed a greater decrease than the control group (-13.585 sec). In gait functions, the TM group showed a greater increase in gait speed (12.8 cm/s vs. 10.15 cm/s), step-length (5.825 cm vs. 3.735 cm), and stride-length (5.005 cm vs. 1.55 cm) than the control group. Conclusions: The treadmill gait trainig improved dynamic balance and gait functions. Further research is needed in order to confirm the generalization of these findings and to identify which stroke patients might benefit from treadmill gait trainig.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the reading habits, reading patterns and reading motivation of 362 college students from the capital area majoring in child development or early childhood education. The main findings of this study were as follows. Firstly, 70 percent of students spent less than three hours a week on reading academic or school-related material, and 75 percent spent less than three hours a week on independent or recreational reading. Students most preferred reading the "cultural" genre and least preferred reading the "human life(spiritual)" genre. The "cultural" and the "human life(spiritual)" genres also represented the most and least frequently read genres, respectively. Secondly, students presented high-level reading patterns, in that they previewed the reading material before reading, understood the meaning of it during reading, and shared their reading experience with others after reading. Thirdly, the average reading motivation levels scored near the midpoint on a five-point scale. Fourthly, students with higher reading motivation levels displayed higher reading frequencies and preference levels for each genre, with the exception of the "fiction and humor" genre. Moreover, students with higher levels of reading motivation received higher ratings for their reading patterns.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of pelvic tilt training using an inclinometer on joint position sense and postural alignment in individuals with stroke. Methods: Thirty-one subjects with chronic stroke were divided into two groups: the experimental group (16 subjects) and the control group (15 subjects). Subjects in both groups received neuro-developmental therapy five times per week. In addition, the patients in the experimental group also received pelvic tilt training using an inclinometer for 30 minutes, 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Maximal range of anterior, posterior pelvic tilt and joint position sense were used to evaluate pelvic tilt motion. Image analysis was performed for evaluation of postural alignment on in standing position. Results: Significant difference in Iimprovement of pre- and post-intervention of joint position sense was observed showed significant difference (p<0.05) in all groups. Experimental groups showed sSignificant differences in maximal range of posterior pelvic tilt in on the paretic side were observed in the experimental groups compared to with the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that pelvic tilt training using an inclinometer may help to improve range of pelvic tilt and joint position sense of stroke patients.
In a small island community with a population of less than 100 residents, nine persons died and five experienced severe illnesses during the period from November 1986 to May 1988. Their initial symptoms were sore throat and fever. Renal failure and hepatitis developed within one week after the onset. Oral mucosal ulcer developed in some cases. After one week, progressive respiratory failure and dyspnea developed evidently and severe respiratory distress and hypoxia preceded those fatal cases. Chest X-ray findings revealed bilateral diffuse multiple cystic lesion with occasional multiple large emphysematous bullae. Based on these features paraquat poisoning was diagnosed and route of poisoning was investigated. In three sources of drinking water, trace amount of paraquat was detected in November 1988, six months after the incidence of recent fatal case. In November 1988, soybean sauces and soybean pastes from 12 households were found contaminated with high concentration of paraquat, the cause could not be identified. The possibility of the contamination of drinking water as the cause of this mass poisoning has been suggested.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of self-volar gliding combined with a strap and wrist distraction on pain and the active and passive wrist extension range of motion (ROM) in subjects with dorsal wrist pain during partial weight bearing of the hand. Methods: Thirty subjects (14 males and 16 females) with dorsal wrist pain during partial weight bearing through the hand participated in this study. The two different self-volar gliding techniques were performed for each group. Self-volar gliding using a strap (SVGS) and SVGS and wrist distraction (SVGSD) were performed five times for one week for each group. The active and passive ROM of wrist extension and the peak pressure pushed by the hand at pain (PPHP) were measured. An independent t-test was used to compare the improvements of these elements between the two different self-volar gliding techniques. The level of statistical significance was at ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: The active and passive ROM of wrist extension and PPHP were greater in both self-volar gliding groups after the one week intervention. On the other hand, these parameters were greater in the SVGSD group than in the SVGS group (p<0.05) Conclusion: SVGSD is recommended to improve the active and passive ROM of wrist extension and PPHP in subjects with dorsal wrist pain during partial weight bearing of the hand.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to see how different aerobic exercise intensities affected AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), reactive oxygen, and antioxidant enzymes in young mice during an 8-week period. Methods: Forty male C57BL/6 mice, aged seven weeks, were randomly assigned to one of four groups: control (n=10), low-intensity exercise (n=10), moderate-intensity exercise (n=10), and high-intensity exercise (n=10). For eight weeks, aerobic activity was performed once a day for 35-40 minutes, five days a week. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), chi-squared tests, and the Tukey test in the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: Weight (p=.001) was substantially different between the moderate-intensity exercise group and the control group in AMPK (p<.001). In addition, there were no significant differences between the moderate-intensity exercise group and the control group in reactive oxygen malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (p=.136) and antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels (p=.521). Conclusion: These findings suggest that moderate-intensity aerobic exercise increased AMPK activation and helped young mice shed weight.
Purpose: This study examined the comparison of effects of non-surgical continuous and intermittent traction on pain, balance and physical function in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Methods: A total of 30 knee osteoarthritis patients were recruited and randomized to a continuous traction group (n=10), an intermittent traction group (n=10), and a control group (n=10). The continuous traction group and intermittent traction group received a non-surgical continuous and intermittent knee joint traction workout five times a week, for 4 weeks. All subjects were assessed with the numeric rating scale (NRS), timed up and go test (TUGT), and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) before and after the 4-week treatment. Results: As a result of comparison within groups, the continuous traction group, intermittent traction group, and control group showed a significant difference for NRS, TUGT, and WOMAC after the experiment (p<0.05). According to the comparison of the three groups, the continuous traction group showed a more effectively significant difference than the intermittent traction group and the control group in the balance and physical functions before and after the experiment (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that non-surgical continuous traction treatment was effective in improving pain, balance ability, and physical function in knee osteoarthritis patients.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of condensed molasses fermentation solubles (CMS) on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and backfat thickness of growing pigs. In an eight-week trial, a total of 120 cross-bred ([Landrace × Yorkshire]× Duroc) growing pigs with an average initial body weight (BW) of 25.84 ± 1.60 kg were used. The pigs were randomly assigned to one of two dietary treatments based on body weight and sex. The dietary treatments were as follows: CON - corn-soybean meal-based basal diet (CON) + 2% molasses; and TRT1 - CON + 2% CMS. Each treatment had 12 replicates with five pigs (three gilts and two castrated barrows) per pen. Though there were no significant differences observed in terms of the growth performance and nutrient digestibility (p < 0.05), the backfat thickness in pigs fed 2% CMS tended to increase in week 4 (p < 0.1). Thus, 2% CMS could be optimal to replace molasses given that it does not exert any adverse effects on the performance of growing pigs.
Objective: The purpose of this studyaimed to investigate the effects of scapular stabilization training using the different exercise prop for impingement syndrome of factory workers. Design: A randomized controlled trial Methods: Twenty shoulder impingement syndrome subjects were randomly divided into two groups of ten subjects each. Inclusion criteria was presence of positive sign in at least two of Neer test, Hawkins test, Yocum test, Jobe test and Speeds test. Andexclusion criteria, those with surgical history of rotator cuff, those with disease in upper limb other than shoulder impingement syndrome, those who took anti-inflammatory drugs over the past 12 months were excluded from the sample. One group was performed scapula stabilization exercise using elastic bands, while dumbbell group performed the exercise using dumbbell. Both groups performed the exercise after applying the general physical therapy. After applying five days a week for a total of six weeks, range of motion of shoulder joint, muscle strength and pain and function level were evaluated. Results: After the intervention, in both groups, all dependent variables at the 6-week post-test significantly improved compared with the pre-test (p<0.05). In addition, elastic band exercise group showed a significant differences in SPADI function score and SPADI total score compared to the dumbbell group(p<0.05). Conclusions: The elastic band training may be effective methodology using low-to-moderate intensity resistance for SPADI scores.
Objective: Meniscal injuries are a common and high-risk condition among military personnel, leading to difficulties in performing missions. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of combining electrical muscle stimulation therapy with exercise therapy during rehabilitation on pain, muscle strength, and function in patients after meniscectomy. Design: A two-group pretest-posttest design Methods: A total of 30 subjects were included in this study. They were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n=15), which received knee extensor strengthening exercise along with electrical muscle stimulation, or the control group (n=15), which received only knee extensor strengthening exercise. Pre-test was conducted prior to the intervention, which consisted of 30 minutes of treatment five times a week for a total of 20 sessions. Post-test was performed after a 4-week period. Pain, strength, and function were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference in pain reduction and muscle strength improvement in the experimental group, and a significant difference was also found between the experimental group and the control group in terms of functional evaluation. Conclusions: The combination of exercise therapy and electrical muscle stimulation therapy resulted in greater improvements in pain, strength, and function assessment, contributing to improved overall function.
