Evaluation of Soybean Meal as a Partial Substitute for Fish Meal in Diet and Experimental Practical Diet for Growth in the Far Eastern Catfish (Silurus asotus) (메기, Silurus asotus 사료의 어분 대체 단백질원으로 대두박 및 실용사료 사육효능 평가)

  • Two feeding trials were conducted to evaluate the soybean meal as a substitute for the fish meal in diet (experiment I), and experimental practical diet and commercial diet (experiment II) for growth of far eastern catfish. In the experiment I, three replicate groups of juveniles (average weight 7.2 g) were fed one of diets containing 0, 10 and 20% soybean meals for 66 days. Survival and final mean weight were not significantly affected by dietary soybean meal levels. No significant differences were observed in feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio and protein retention of fish fed between 0% (control diet) and 20% soybean meal diets. However, fish fed 10% soybean meal diet showed the lower feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio and protein retention, and higher daily feed intake compared with fish fed control diet and 20% soybean meal diet. The contents of moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and ash in the whole body were not significantly affected by dietary soybean meal levels. In the experiment II, three replicate groups of juveniles (average weight 7.3 g) were fed either the formulated diet or commercial diet for 66 days. Survival and final mean weight were not significantly different among treatment. Significantly higher feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio and protein retention, and lower daily feed intake were observed in fish fed experimental practical diet compared with fish fed commercial diet (P<0.05). Proximate compositions of the whole body were not significantly affected by diets. The results of these studies suggest that soybean meal can be used as a substitute for fish meal up to 20% in diet, and the dietary formulation used in the experiment II could be applied to the practical feed for far eastern catfish.

Comparison of Extruded and Moist Pellets for Whole-body Proximate Composition and Growth Performance of Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (배합사료 및 습사료 공급에 따른 넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus)의 성장 및 어체성분 비교)

  • Two consecutive feeding trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of extruded pellet (EP) and raw fish-based moist pellet (MP) in the juvenile (experiment I) and sub-adult (experiment II) stages of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. The fish were distributed randomly to three aquarium tanks, as a group of 1,200 fish (initial mean weight $13.5{\pm}1.76g$) in experiment I, and as a group of 390 fish (initial mean weight $385{\pm}15.3g$) in experiment II. In experiment I, the weight gain, specific growth rate, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, and survival of fish fed EP were all significantly higher than those of fish fed MP. In experiment II, no significant differences were observed in weight gain, specific growth rate and survival between the EP and MP groups. However, the feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratios of fish fed EP were significantly higher than those of fish fed MP. The results of this study indicate that EP could be developed to replace MP for market size production of olive flounder without any adverse effects on the growth performance. The dietary formulation used in this study could be used as an appropriate feed for olive flounder.

Relationships among Gonad Weight, Liver Weight and Body Weight of Major, Common and Some Chinese Carps under Composite Culture System with Special Reference to Pond Fertilization

  • The relationship of gonad weight and liver weight with body weight of six fish species viz; Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhina mrigala, Hypophthlamichthys molitrix, Ctenopharyngodon idella and Cyprinus carpio under the influence of artificial feed, broiler manure, buffalo manure, N:P:K (25:25:0) and a control pond were examined after a rearing period of one year. The positive relationship between gonad weight and body weight was significant which showed the dependence of gonadal development on body weight in all the six fish species. The currelation coefficients were higher in female fishes. However, the major carps had a much smaller proportional gonadal weight as compared with Chinese carps and a common carp due to their faster growth rate. The overall comparison of six fish species under different experimental treatments revealed that highest liver weight was observed for C. idella closely followed by C. carpio. The maximum correlation value was observed with H. molitrix under the broiler manure. The maximum Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) remained as 32.63 for C. carpio followed by C. idella. The maximum value for Hepatosomatic Index (HSI). remained 1.99 for C. idella followed by C. mrigala.

Effect of Stocking Density on the Growth and Body Composition of the Mandarin Fish Siniperca scherzeri (사육밀도에 따른 쏘가리(Siniperca scherzeri)의 성장 및 체조성 변화)

  • This study investigated the effects of stocking density on the growth of the mandarin fish Siniperca scherzeri, in small (1-year old, 50.2 g/fish) and large (2-years old, 173.1 g/fish) size (age) groups. Small and large fish groups were fed pelleted diets twice daily for 10 and 15 weeks, respectively. In the small group, at the end of the feeding, the weight gain of fish at a density of $4kg/m^3$ was lower than that of fish at densities of 3, 2 and $1kg/m^3$. However, fish stocking density did not affect feed efficiency. The daily feed intake of fish at a density of $4kg/m^3$ was lower than that fish at densities of 3, 2 and $1kg/m^3$. In the large fish group, the weight gain of fish at a density of $4.5kg/m^3$ was higher than that of fish at densities of 6, 3 and $1.5kg/m^3$. Again, fish stocking density did not affect feed efficiency. The daily feed intake of fish at a density of $4.5kg/m^3$ was higher than that of fish at densities of 6, 3 and $1.5kg/m^3$. Based on these results, the optimum stocking density for small (50.2 g/fish) and large (173.1 g/fish) mandarin fish is 3 and $4.5kg/m^3$, respectively.

  • The depleting fishes resource and water pollution in coast has a decisive effect on the fish farm and fisheries. For solving these problems the fish farms are moving to the offshore. The fish farms in offshore have to design the strong mechanism as compared with cost's fish farm, and operate by the remote feeding system and monitoring system for safety and management.. This paper describes a remote feeding system for fish farms in offshore. The amount of feed is depending on temperature and fish weight. The fish farm temperature is changed extremely in offshore than on land side. This paper described that the feed amount is calculated automatically according to temperature and fish weight, and the remote feed system. The performance of remote feed system is tested with model.

Taxonomy of Preys in Natural Young Tarpon, Megalops atlanticus

  • Predater, tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) has a specific preferring preys in natural environments. To investigate this, young tarpon were captured and their stomach contents were weighed and sorted based on taxonomic groups. Average standard length and body weight for tarpon captured were 11.49 cm and 34.67 g, respectively. The average weight of the stomach contents in the tarpon was 0.83 g. The status of digestion extent of the consumed preys was 2.37 which indicated that preys were relatively well digested. The main preys in tarpon stomach were other fishes (mosquito fish and sheepshead minnow) and shrimp. Frequency occurrence of fishes in tarpon stomach was highest (P<0.05). Also, frequency occurrence of shrimp was higher than that of fly (P<0.05). Mean individual number of fish found in tarpon stomach was 2.66 per tarpon and it was higher than that of shrimp or fly (P<0.05). There was linear regression between the total weight of the consumed preys and the standard length of tarpon; Y (Total weight of preys) = 0.3151 $\times$ (Standard length of tarpon) - 2.7123, $R^2$=0.6140. Also, there was the strong linear regression between the total weight of the consumed preys and weight of the tarpon; Y (Total weight of preys) = 0.0299 $\times$ (Body weight of tarpon) - 0.0774, $R^2$=0.7882. These results indicated that the main preys for young tarpon in their natural environments were small fish composed of mosquito fish and sheepshead minnow and shrimp. And there was the stronger correlation between the total weight of preys and the body weight of tarpon than that between the total weight of preys and the standard length of tarpon.

Optimal Dietary Protein and Lipid Levels for Growth of Juvenile Israeli Carp Cyprinus carpio

  • A feeding trial of four dietary protein levels (20, 30, 40, and 50%) and two lipid levels (7 and 14%) with a factorial design was conducted to determine the optimal dietary protein and lipid levels for juvenile Israeli carp Cyprinus carpio. Triplicate groups of fish (average body weight, $1.3{\pm}0.02g$) were fed the experimental diets for 9 weeks. Survival of fish was not affected by either dietary protein or dietary lipid level. Weight gain and feed efficiency increased as dietary protein levels increased up to 40 and 50%, respectively. Weight gain was higher in fish fed the high-lipid diets with 20 and 40% protein content. Feeding efficiency increased as the dietary lipid level increased for the 30, 40, and 50% protein diets. Daily feed intake decreased with increasing protein level and the minimum feed consumption was observed in fish fed the 50% protein diet with 14% lipid content. Moisture and lipid contents of the whole body were affected by both dietary protein and lipid levels. The crude lipid content of fish fed the 14% lipid diet was higher than that of fish fed the 7% lipid diet at each protein level. The results of this study indicate that a diet containing 40% protein with 14% lipid content is optimal for the growth and effective protein utilization of juvenile Israeli carp.

Optimum Feeding Rate in Growing Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus Fed Practical Expanded Pellet at Optimum Water Temperature (19-21℃) (적수온(19-21℃)에서 배합사료를 공급한 육성기 넙치(Paralichthys olivaceus)의 적정 공급률)

  • We investigated the effects of feeding rate on the growth performance, blood components, and histology of growing olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. We determined the optimum feeding rate (initial fish mean weight of $240{\pm}10.9$ g) at the optimum water temperature. Two replicated groups of fish were fed a commercial diet at rates of 0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.0% body weight (BW) per day, and to satiation. Feeding trial was conducted using a flow-through system with 10 1.2-metric ton aquaria receiving filtered seawater at $19-21^{\circ}C$ for three weeks. Weight gain (WG) for fish fed to satiation was significantly higher than that of unfed fish and fish fed at 0.5% and 0.75% BW per day. The WG of fish fed at 1.0% BW per day was significantly higher than that of unfed fish and of fish fed at 0.5% BW per day. However, there were no significant differences in WG between fish fed at 0.5% BW per day and those fed at 0.75% BW per day, between fish fed at 0.75% BW per day and those fed at 1.0% BW per day, and between fish fed at 1.0% BW per day and those fed to satiation. The specific growth rates of fish fed at 1.0% BW per day and those fed to satiation were significantly higher than those of unfed fish and of fish fed at 0.5% BW per day. Broken-line regression analysis of weight gain showed that the optimum feeding rate of olive flounder weighing 240 g was 1.09% BW per day at the optimum water temperature.

Enhancement of Chemiluminescent Response of Phagocytic Cells from Juvenile Rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, by Oral Administration of Levamisole

  • The chemiluminescent (CL) response of phagocytes from juvenile rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, which were administered orally with levamisole was investigated. The fish intubated with doses of levamisole either at 0.5mg $kg^-$ or 1 mg $kg^-$body weight showed significant increase in CL responses at two weeks after the administration. The increased extent of CL in the fish exposed to 0.5 mg $kg^-$ body weight was considerably lower than that in the fish exposed to 1 mg $kg^-$. The fish exposed to 5 mg $kg^-$ body weight showed a steady and significant increase of CL response after the intubation. The fish intubated with 10 mg of levamisole $kg^-$ body weight, however, showed no significant differences in CL response after the administration. In the experiment of feeding experimental diet, a lower dose of levamisole induced immunostimulation of phagocytes, but higher doses of levamisole induced immunosuppression of phagocytes. At one week after marking and blood sampling, plasma glucose level was significantly increased in the control group and the group intubated 0.5 mg levamisole/kg body weight. However, the fish in another groups, which were administered higher levels of levamisole, showed no significant difference in glucose level after marking and blood sampling. The result of the present study suggests that levamisole can be used as a potent immunostimulator in rockfish by oral administration, and the immunomodulating activity of levamisole depends on the dosage used.

A Study on the AI-based Fish Classification and Weight Estimation System (인공지능 기반 어류 분류 및 무게 추정 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, production of offshore fisheries in Korea has been decreasing. Since production of offshore fisheries in 2016 fell below 1 million tons for the first time in 44 years, it has not recovered and has been decreasing. In order to cope with such a decrease in fishery resources, the TAC (total allowable catch) system is implemented internationally for fisheries resource management. Since 1999, South Korea has introduced the TAC system to perform resource management. In this paper, we propose an artificial intelligence-based fish classification and weight estimation system that can be used to investigate fishery resources of land observers essential for the implementation of the TAC system. The system consists of an app and a cloud server that automatically measures the body size and height of fish and takes photos using a terminal equipped with a lidar sensor. In the cloud server, fish classification is performed using a CNN-based efficientnet model and the weight of fish is predicted using automatically measured body length and body height information. Using this system, it is possible to improve the existing method in which the land observer manually writes after measuring the tape measure and weight in the stomach market.
