Spatial distribution of dinoflagellate resting cysts in Yellow Sea surface sediments

  • Yellow Sea surface sediment samples collected on October 15-31, 2003 were analyzed using the palynological process to investigate the spatial distribution of dinoflagellate resting cysts. The sampling areas comprised four latitudinal transects, the northernmost of which was located off the Shandong Peninsula, China and the southernmost off Jeju Island, Korea. Each transect line was composed of six to nine stations, spanning the distance between the Chinese and Korean coasts. Twenty-five different types of dinoflagellate cysts were identified. Gonyaulax scrippsae, Alexandrium spp. (ellipsoidal type), and G. spinifera were the most dominant at all stations surveyed. Dinoflagellate cysts belonging to the Gonyaulacales comprised over 50% of all cysts collected. The latitudinal distribution trend showed that cyst concentrations along the two middle transects were much higher than those along the two northern and southern transects. Cyst concentrations in the offshore central areas reached their highest values within each transect and gradually decreased toward the Chinese and Korean coasts. Overall, cyst concentrations were markedly elevated in the offshore central Yellow Sea areas and gradually decreased outward in all four directions. This concentric cyst distribution pattern was consistent with the hydrographic features of the Yellow Sea, such as circular current systems, sedimentary properties, and water depth.

  • The distribution and abundance of coastal fish species in Asan Bay, Korea, were estimated from hydroacoustic survey and net catches. Acoustic data were collected with 38 and 200 kHz from July to October of 2012, and converted to the nautical area scattering coefficient (NASC, $m^2/mile^2$) for $0.25n{\cdot}mile$ along ten transects. Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus was the dominant specie in the net catches. The virtual echogram technique was used to distinguish E. japonicus from other species based on the differences in the mean volume backscattering strength (${\Delta}MVBS$) at 38 and 200 kHz. Engraulis japonicus and other fishes are mainly distributed in the center channel and outer part of Asan Bay. E. japonicus tends to move from inner to outer Asan Bay in summer and fall. From NASC data, the target strength and length-weight function of E. japonicus and other fishes were used to estimate the E. japonicus stock at 24.1-93.3 tons, and other fish at 40.6-88.4 tons from July to October 2012. The estimated anchovy biomass compared well with the cumulative catch weight from stow net catches. The hydroacoustic method offers an approach to understanding spatial/temporal structure and estimating the biomass of fish aggregations in coastal areas.

  • ADCPs have been widely used to estimate the dynamic characteristics and biomass of sound scattering layers (SSLs), and swimming speed of fish schools for analyzing SSLs spatial distribution and/or various behavior patterns. This result showed that the verification of the mean volume backscattering strength (MVBS or averaged SV, dB) acquired by the ADCP would be necessary for a quantitative analysis on the spatial distribution and the biomass estimation of the SSLs or fish school when ADCP is used for estimating their biomass. In addition, the calibrated sphere method was used to verify values of each MVBS obtained from 4 beams of ADCP (153.6 kHz) on the base of 3 frequencies (38, 120, 200 kHz) of Scientific echo sounder's split beam system. Then, the measured SV values were compared and analyzed in its Target Strength (TS, dB) values estimated by a theoretical acoustic scattering model.

  • The hydro-acoustic method is widely used for estimating biomass and distribution of fisheries resources along the coast and in the ocean. High costs and time are necessary to construct systems for this method and to initially educate specialists. It has been used in fisheries of advanced nations like Japan and Norway, because it is more efficient than other methods. In order to research the behavior of fish around an artificial reef using an echo sounder, volume backscattering strength (SV) and fish per cubic meter (FPCM) of darkbanded rockfish around the model artificial reef in a water tank were measured. Moreover, behavior of fish was observed in an adjacent artificial reef, which was constructed at Tongyeong marine ranching area. Following that, an acoustics survey was conducted at Mirukdo around the Tongyeong marine ranching area, in order to understand the spatial distribution and strength of fisheries resources. Very high patches of fish were found in a wide area around the artificial reef. It is thought that an approaching fish school around the artificial reef can be measured accurately by using an echo sounder of high resolution. Moreover, use of other monitoring methods like of diving or ROV simultaneous with an echo sounder is required in order to grasp the species and ecology of fish inhabiting the area around the artificial reef.

전국자연환경조사 자료를 이용한 배스(Micropterus salmoides) 시공간 분포 분석 및 생태위해성 평가 (Long-term distribution trend analysis of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), based on National Fish Database, and the ecological risk assessments)

  • 본 연구는 전국자연환경조사 어류 데이터를 이용하여 국내 담수 생태계에 도입된 배스의 분포 현황을 파악하고 공간분석을 통해 핫스팟 지역을 분석하였다. 위해성 평가를 통해 배스의 잠재적 침습성을 평가하여 수생태계 생물 다양성 교란에 대한 영향을 재고하였다. 분포 분석 결과, 제주도 지역을 포함하여 한강권역과 낙동강권역, 금강권역, 영산강·섬진강권역 전체에서 분포하는 것으로 분석되었다. 낙동강권역에서 가장 높은 출현율을 나타내었으며, 제주도 지역을 제외한 영산강·섬진강권역에서 비교적 낮은 출현율을 나타내는 것으로 분석되었다. 배스의 공간적 군집 밀도가 높은 지역으로는 낙동강권역의 낙동강수계가 선정되었으며, 반대로 낮은 지역으로는 한강권역과 금강권역의 인접한 지역으로 분석되었다. 국내 대부분의 담수하천에 서식하는 것으로 나타난 배스의 위해성 평가를 실시한 결과, 31점의 높은 침습성을 보이는 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구를 통해 우리나라 담수 생태계에 정착한 것으로 파악되는 생태계교란종인 배스로부터 실질적인 관리 우선지역을 도출하여 담수 생태계 다양성 보전을 위한 과학적 기초자료를 마련할 수 있을 것으로 전망한다.

Ichthyofaunistic Biogeography of the East Sea: Comparison between Benthic and Pelagic Zonalities

  • An ichthyofauna analysis of the East Sea using quantitative investigation procedures for latitudinal variations of the species richness and clustering of the species list is presented to illustrate the application of the adopted geographical scaling (less than 1:10,000,000) which provides a principal opportunity for common benthic and pelagic biogeographical zonation. The distribution of both pelagic and benthic marine fish biota at a scale of biosphere (or its major sections) was highly influenced by spatial nonuniformity of hydrological structure associated with the various water circulations and frontal zones. Following zoogeographical zonations were established for the East Sea: Osaka, East Korea, Primorye, North Primorye, Northern East Sea, Uetsu, Tsugaru, Soya and West Sakhalin.

섬진강 하류역에 서식하는 어류의 군집구조 및 공간 규모에서 종 다양성 (Community Structure and Species Diversity of Fish across Spatial Scales in the Lower Reach of Seomjin River)

  • A biological assessments of fish community structure were carried out in the lower reach of Seomjin River from May 2009 to November 2010. The collected fish from the six surveyed sites were 63 species belonging to 24 families, and 10 orders. Although species was different depending on sites, the numbers of individuals were not shown significance on sites. Locational dominant species were different. For example, the dominant species on May were Zacco platypus at W-1, Zacco temminckii at W-2, Acanthogobius flavimanus at W-3 and W-4, and Leiognathus nuchalis at W-5 and W-6. There is no seasonal differences in species. Species diversity was the best up to 2.64 on May at W-1 from 1.33 on November at W-6. As a result of an analysis about environmental factors for the numbers of fish species and individuals in each surveyed sites, the most effective groups were DO, BOD, and COD. The proportional difference was high on May than November between transient and asymptotic projections for population size and population growth rate for simulations starting at the current or theoretical stage distribution.

어류군집의 종분포모형을 이용한 수변지역 연결성 평가 (Riparian Connectivity Assessment Using Species Distribution Model of Fish Assembly)

  • 하천 코리더는 종의 국소적 소멸을 예방하도록 분산과 이동을 원활하게 한다. 그러나 우리나라는 수변의 치수, 친수, 이수와 같은 기능을 중시한 결과 수중보, 댐과 같은 인공구조물 설치로 하천 코리더의 연결성을 약화시켜왔다. 본 연구는 강원도 횡성의 섬강을 대상으로 어류의 군집에 영향을 미치는 변수를 종분포모형을 이용하여 추출하고 수변지역의 연결성을 종풍부도와 희귀도로 평가하는 것이다. 현장조사 결과 출현종수는 38종 7,061개체로 나타났으며, 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 종분포모형 결과 어류의 종풍부도에 영향을 주는 변수는 유속과 급여울, 하천의 폭과 수변의 면적으로 선택되었으며, 모형의 정확도 검증 결과 상관계수는 0.83, 절대평균오차는(MAPE)는 19.2%로 적합한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 희귀도가 낮은 지점은 수로가 직강화된 전천과 횡성군 시가화지역 인근으로 나타났으며, 높은 지점은 하천 폭이 넓고 섬강과 전천이 합류하는 지점과 하도습지가 있는 하류지점으로 분석되었다. 연결성이 낮은 지점은 수변의 완충림이 거의 없고 보(洑)가 설치되어 있는 지점으로 나타났으며, 높은 지점은 하천 주변에 농경지 및 산림과 같은 자연토지피복이 우점하고 수변의 모래/자갈의 비율이 높은 곳이 연결성이 높게 평가되었다. 본 연구에서 제시한 결과는 복원을 위한 가이드로 기존 수변 시설물을 개선하고 추가하여 연결성을 강화시키는데 좋은 기준이 될 것으로 판단한다.

GAP기법을 이용한 종소하천의 어류종다양성 예측기법 연구 (Estimation of Fish Species Diversity of Small and Medium Rivers of Korea with Fish Species-Habitat Relationship Models od GAP)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 중소하천의 어류 종다양성 예측을 위한 모형의 개발 및 정확성 검증을 하는 것이다. 본 예측 모형은 미국의 GAP의 일환으로서 뉴욕주 어류-야생동물연구팀이 개발한 어류종다양성 예측모형을 기초로 하였으며, 하천의 크기, 물리적서식지, 및 수질의 세가지 서식지 요인을 활용한다. 본 연구에서는 미국 EPA 수질환경기준과 우리나라 수질기준을 적용하여 2개의 예측모형을 개발하였으며, 본 연구 대상지는 한강 수계의 탄천, 사기막천, 수동천, 미 조종천을 대상으로 한다. 본 연구의 발견사항은 다음과 같이 요약할 수 잇다. 첫째, 본 연구대상지 총 118개 하천구간은 예측모형 l과 예측모형 ll에 의하여 각각 9개와 14개의 서식지 유형으로 분류되었다. 둘째, 멸종위기종인 퉁가리, 희귀종인 배가사리 및 쉬리의 분포예측도를 작성하고, 정확도를 검증한 결과 예측모형 l과 ll를 이용한 종풍부도 예측결과는 각각 94%및 95%를 보였으며, 수질이 어류 종풍부도에 지대한 영향을 미치는 것으로 판명되었다. 넷째, 예측모형 l과 ll의 각 하천구간 출현종의 정확도는 각각50.5%및 68.8%로는 낮은 편이었으며, 수질오염이 심한 하천을 제외한 정확도는 각각 67.1%및 86.5%로 향상되었다. 마지막으로 우리나라 수질기준을 적용한 예측모형 ll의 정확도가 높으며, 이들 예측모형의 정확도는 수질향상 및 자연형 하천복원에 의하여 향상될 수 있는 것으로 판명되었다.

Food Habits and Ecological Interactions of Alaska Plaice, Pzeuronectes quadrituberculatus, with Other Flatfish Species in the Eastern Bering Sea

  • Food habits of Alaska plaice, Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus, and ecological interactions of this species with yellowfin sole, Limanda aspera, and rock sole, Lepidopsetta bilineata, in the eastern Bering Sea were studied. Alaska plaice mainly feed on polychaetes regardless of sex and size of fish. However, it was shown that food differed by sampling area. Feeding did not occur at night. Food competition seems to be negligible among the three shallow water fiatfish species inhabiting the eastern Bering Sea due to differences in food spectra or spatial distribution.
