  • This paper presents a computer program for easy and rapid disease diagnosis of olive flounder diseases. To design the program, standard diagnosis process of the 14 olive flounder diseases was first setup, then implemented four-steps diagnosis program. To run program, first input fundamental information such as water temperature, size of the diseased fish. Then sequentially, three categories of key factors for disease diagnosis which include external clinical signs, internal clinical signs and microscopic observations are selected. When a user selects the observed signs of olive flounder from the listed options, the program provides maximum 5 presumed disease candidates in order. The disease information, treatment and prevention methods are provided by connected web server through internet. The program would support fish doctors and farmers by providing easy and rapid diagnosis of diseased olive flounder.

  • Water temperature is a key environmental factor controlling the epizootics of viral diseases in fish. High water temperature is associated with the rapid spread of rock bream iridovirus (RBIV) disease and with high mortality of RBIV infected fish. Although protection of fish against iridoviral disease by active immunization has been reported, little information is available concerning whether fish survived from an epizootic of iridoviral disease can naturally acquire resistance against the viral disease. In the present study, we have demonstrated that juvenile rock bream, which survived from a natural epizootic of RBIV, acquired resistance against recurrence or reinfection of RBIV, and this resistance was established during the subsequent low water temperature period. Furthermore, the possible involvement of the adaptive humoral immune response in the resistance of the juvenile rock bream was suggested by in vivo neutralization experiment.

  • A blood parrot (Amphilophus citrinellus × Vieja melanurus) cichlid showing a flared left operculum was sent to the Fish Disease Clinic. The fish showed intermittently irregular ventilation and reddish soft swellings located at the ventral part of the left branchial cavity for one month. Other abnormal symptoms were not observed, and the appetite was normal. Only a putative diagnosis was conducted based on the history taking and external symptoms because the owner did not want an invasive biopsy or other potentially stressful examination of the fish. Therefore, considering the information available and the treatability, goiter (thyroid hyperplasia) was suspected as the top differential diagnosis, and the empirical treatment of administering iodide (0.03~0.015ppm) in environmental water was conducted. The treatment was discontinued for six months because the swelling was noticeably reduced. Body color became pale, but other abnormal signs were not observed.

  • In this paper, we suggest a fish drug domain ontology to show an associated information and hierarchy together through concept-relation and inference mechanism instead of keyword matching. First, we investigate competency questions from workers of fishery industry and then we derive concepts and terminologies. Next, we present a process of fish drug ontology modelling using Protege-OWL editor, which is an extension of Protege that supports the Web Ontology Language(OWL). Last, we suggest the user interface of semantic web-based fish drug information system to search easily associated informations of fish drug using this ontology. It is to provide an effective search method that fish disease manager, fish farmer, and students majoring in fisheries can confirm details of diseases, fish, and drug evaluations associated with fish drug within one screen without moving to another position.

  • The impact of global warming on aquatic systems has been a priority research area in the past decade. However, the possibility that increased temperatures will cause shifts in viral disease outbreaks has not been well addressed. In the present study, with increasing water temperature (WT) in the coastal area of Korea, we estimated the possibility of changes in fish viral diseases. From the present time, WT may rise between 0.62 and $1.7^{\circ}C$ by 2050, and the effect on aquaculture could be more adverse than benefitial. Red seabream iridovirus disease (RSIVD) and viral nervous necrosis (VNN) cause high mortality above 22 and $24^{\circ}C$, respectively, and outbreaks could commence earlier and persist for prolonged periods. Nevertheless, the period of occurrence of viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS), which outbreaks at a lower WT (< $18^{\circ}C$), could be shorter than the current infectious period. Thermal stress in fish causes reductions in growth and immunocompetence; thus, increases in summer WT can lead to the development of new viral diseases. WT has a strong influence on fish population dynamics; therefore, entry of new viruses and changes in the prevalence of infection can be expected if carrier fishes are introduced or migrate to Korean waters.

  • Disease monitoring in wild aquatic animals is necessary to obtain information about disease occurrence, disease agents, and the transmission of diseases between wild and cultured species. In this study, we monitored viral diseases in wild marine fish and crustacea caught by trawl in Korea in April and October 2018. We monitored the viral diseases in 977 fish from 39 different species and 287 crustacea from 14 different species. In fish, we collected kidney and spleen to detect viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV), marine birnavirus (MABV), hirame rhabdovirus (HRV), and lymphocystis disease virus (LCDV). In crustacea, we monitored white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV), taura syndrome virus (TSV), infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV), yellowhead disease virus (YHDV), and white tail disease virus (WTDV) using pleopods, pereiopods, gills, muscle, and hepatopancreases. Although none of the viral diseases tested in this study were detected in the samples, these results will help disease control between aquaculture species and wild aquatic animals.

  • Imported ornamental fish should be quarantined because they can have dangerous diseases depending on their habitat. The quarantine requires a lot of time because quarantine officers collect various information on the imported ornamental fish. Inefficient quarantine processes reduce its work efficiency and accuracy. Also, long-time quarantine causes the death of environmentally sensitive ornamental fish and huge financial losses. To improve existing quarantine systems, information on ornamental fish was collected and structured, and a server was established to develop quarantine performance support software equipped with a text search engine. However, the long names of ornamental fish in general can cause many typos and time bottlenecks when we type search words for the target fish information. Therefore, we need a technique that can correct typos. Typical typo character calibration compares input text with all characters in a calibrated candidate text dictionary. However, this approach requires computational power proportional to the number of typos, resulting in slow processing time and low calibration accuracy performance. Therefore, to improve the calibration accuracy of characters, we propose a fusion system of simple Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models and character preprocessing methods that accelerate the process by minimizing the computation of the models. We also propose a typo character generation method used for training the ANN models. Simulation results show that the proposed typo character correction system is about 6 times faster than the conventional method and has 10% higher accuracy.

  • It is required that system can seamlessly identify and manage change history and comprehensive assessment of several types of data as well as individual information of feeding and water environment for scientific and systematic management of fish farming environment and fish farmer. In this study, we implemented the system which can present and simulate current status of water quality and feeding based on th historical data of them, and check changes of state step by step using visual C++. In addition, we proposed the entropy model which can be comprehensive analysis about water quality and feed status information based on knowledge of fisheries. It can be the foundation to create high-level environment model reflecting the more diverse fisheries knowledge such as disease.

  • In situ detection of RNAs is becoming increasingly important for analysis of gene expression within and between intact cells in tissues. International genomics efforts are now cataloging patterns of RNA transcription that play roles in cell function, differentiation, and disease formation, and they are demon-strating the importance of coding and noncoding RNA transcripts in these processes. However, these techniques typically provide ensemble averages of transcription across many cells. In situ hybridization-based analysis methods complement these studies by providing information about how expression levels change between cells within normal and diseased tissues, and they provide information about the localization of transcripts within cells, which is important in understanding mechanisms of gene regulation. Multi-color, single-molecule fluorescence in situ hybridization (smFISH) is particularly useful since it enables analysis of several different transcripts simultaneously. Combining smFISH with immunofluorescent protein detection provides additional information about the association between transcription level, cellular localization, and protein expression in individual cells.
