  • Aquaculture production of Hounder has been increased in the last decade in Korea. However, moist pellet primarily made of raw fish has been used as feed for flounder. Therefore, for further expansion of flounder farming, it is essential to employ practical formulated feeds which can support reasonable growth. Several studies on nutrition (Lee et al., 2000) and utilization of some plant protein source as a substitute for fish meal (Kikuchi, 1999) have been conducted for flounder diets. (omitted)

  • Ayu (or called sweet fish or sweet smelt), Plecoglossus altivelis, is a diadromous fish migrated from freshwater to brackish water to spawn, hatched larvae migrated go to seawater and then back to freshwater to grow. In Asia, it has very high consumers demand due to its good taste and Savor. However, population of this species is currently decreasing because of river pollution, over-fishing and dam construction. • A laboratory study was made for developing an fermentative method of producing conventional Korean soy sauce type of product from sandfish and defatted soy bean Koji of Aspergillus oryzae as raw material and enzme source, respectively. As an attempt to shorten the fermentation period, the admixture, consisting of pre-chopped sandfish slurry and the Koji of Asp. oryzae (100:15, wet fish weight/dry Koji weight) with added water equal to the fish weight (v/w), was first allowed, while being agitated at 450rpm, to undergo digestion for a 5 hour period at $50^{\circ}C$ with no added salt and then then, after adding 20% salt (w/v), the hydrolysate mixture was ripened for up to 13 weeks at $30^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C,$ At intervals, an aliquot was withdrawn for determining microbiological, chemical and organoleptic changes taking place in the sandfish-defatted soy bean koji mixture during both digestion and ripening period.

• A scanning electron microscopic study on the glochidium and glochidial encystment of Anodonta archefomis on the host fish Carassius auratus was conducted. The shape of the glochidium is apparently subtriangular and its average size is 270${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ $\times$ 260${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ $\times$ 145${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The glochidial shell valves are of the same size, kept together by a ligament of 50.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in length and 5.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in width. (omitted)

  • Recently, industrial activities have increased atmospheric concentration of sulfur and nitrogen oxides, resulting in acidification in the environments. In addition, acidification accelerates the mobilization of metals that are toxic to fish and increases their concentrations in the aquatic environment. Increased metals may interfere with reproductive physiology in fish. Al and Cd are such metals that impaired the preduction of Vitellogenin (VTG), a egg yolk precursor proteins. (omitted)

  • In the 1990's several economically important marine fisheries collapsed or showed signs of extreme hardship owing to overcapitalization and excessive fishing pressure on the resources. Public concern was raised and demands voiced for more prudent fishery management practices. The United Nations responded and developed international guidelines, such as the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fishing and the UN Straddling Fish Socks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks Agreement These guidelines task fishery managers to take prudent steps to ensure the long-term viability of fisheries and fishery resources. Included in the guidelines are two particular demands that will challenge stock assessment scientists in the new millennium. They are application of the precautionary approach and the inclusion of ecological considerations in assessments and management advice. High-lighted in the presentation are examples from the central-western Pacifi skipjack tuna fishery and the eastern Pacific thresher shark fishery where insufficien information is affecting stock assessments. The shortcomings are further linked t the new challenges of applying the precautionary approach, such as reference points, and ecological considerations, such as predator-prey and oceanographic-regime shift.(omitted)
