Substitution of Fish Meal by Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) in Practical Diets for Pacific White Shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei

  • Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) was evaluated to investigate the effect of partial or total replacement of fish meal in diets for white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Experimental groups of shrimp with average initial body weight (2.43 ± 0.54 g) were fed each with 4 isonitrogeneous (38% crude protein) diets formulated to include 0, 25, 50 and 100% (diets 1 to 4, respectively) of fish meal substituted with mealworm. After eight weeks of feeding trials, shrimp fed with diet 3 and 4 revealed the highest values for live weight gain(8.01 ± 2.51 and 7.93 ± 1.12), specific growth rates (2.70 ± 1.12 and 2.59 ± 0.51) as well as better feed conversion ratio (2.69 ± 0.09 and 2.72 ± 0.19) compared to the control group with statistically significant manner (p<0.05). Survival range was 98% in all the treatments. An increase in weight gain and other growth associated parameters was observed with higher replacement. These results clearly indicate that 50% and 100% of fish meal protein in shrimp diet can be replaced by mealworm not only without any adverse effect but also the effect of promoting growth performance.

  • Recirculating aquaculture systems consist of different treatment compartments that maintain water quality within the ranges of commonly recommended for fish culture. This paper presents the common considerations in designing different treatment compartments as well as the engineering criteria in designing closed recirculating aquaculture system including a circular tank for fish culture, a sedimentation basin and a foam fractionator for solids removal, two styrofoam bead filters for TAN removal, a sand filter for nitrate removal, and aerators. The main purpose is to outline a common procedure in designing of closed recirculating aquaculture system for marine fish culture.

  • Anthropogenic underwater sound such as ship radiated noise, pile driving noise. underwater explosive blast and so on, affects marine animals. This study describes the effects of underwater noise on fishes. The characteristics of noise, fish hearing and response, and sound propagation loss are analysed based on existing results and measured data in marine construction site. Finally, the safety zone range of fish on man made underwater noise is derived.

  • This study describes the optimum size of a reef set in Korean coastal waters. Data were analyzed in relation to the weight and variety of fish species caught with a three-layer gill net. The results did not indicate a significant difference in the mean catch and mean number of fish species among the three different reef sets, 800, 1,600 and 2400 $m^3$.

  • Salted anchovy, generally favored in Europe, is one of the traditional fermented fish products in southern European countries and raw anchovy are aged in 20∼30% NaCl solution for 6 months (Ishida et al., 1994). They are then steeped in oil in glass jar or can, and marketed. The salt-fermented fish sauce, such as anchovy sauce and shrimp sauce are tropical fermented seafood from fish in Korea. (omitted)

  • 가상 해저환경에 존재하는 군중 캐릭터 움직임을 수작업에 의존하는 기존의 애니메이션 제작 방법으로 제작할 경우 많은 시간과 비용이 필요하기 때문에 이를 자동화하여 보다 효율적이고 쉽게 제공하기 위해 장면의 사실성, 시스템의 성능 그리고 사용자와의 상호작용성을 적용하여 자연스러운 해저환경을 표현하고 군중 행동 장면을 생성을 위해서 자동화 기법이 개발되어야 한다. 본 논문에서는 군중 행동 시뮬레이터를 개발하여 해저환경속에서 사실적이고 효율적인 객체 표현을 위해 3D 객체에 군중행동양식을 부여하고, 상호작용이 가능하도록 다수의 Fish 군중행동 시뮬레이터를 설계한다.

  • Olive flounder and Black rockfish comprises around 90% of the total fish culture in Korea. Most of the olive flounder is consumed as raw fish meat “saengseonhoe”, as like a sashimi in Japan. Also, texture is particularly a important factor which determine the quality of raw fish meat in Korea.   • Several nutrients in feed are needed for growth and maintenance of fish and protein among them is probably the most important factor influencing its growth and determining feed cost due to high Proportion. Besides, dietary energy level is critical because protein source in the feed was utilized as energy source when the feed deficient in energy was fed to fish, whereas when the feed excess in energy was fed to fish, feed consumption decreased and resulted in growth reduction due to lack of necessary other nutrients for the normal growth (Lovell 1989).   • A fish feed being used most widely in aquacultural farm is a moist pellet (MP) feed which has been being prepared by mixing of commercial dry feed and nutritional oil to raw fish ky. The two major problems in the use of MP feed is to be readily dispersed in water of an aquacultural farm, and to cause lipid oxidation and bacteria infection during storage. The former induce an environmental pollution of the farm and the latter lower nutritional values and develop fish diseasees. (omitted)
