First Mover Advantage in the Internet Marketplace (인터넷 경쟁환경에서의 선발자 우위에 대한 실증적 연구)

  • Despite our extensive understanding on the Internet business and widely understood first-mover advantage. it is not clearly answered yet whether an internet firm can enjoy the first-mover advantage in the new environment of the Internet. This is mainly because the Internet marketplace itself has a complex combination of various business models, ranging from a simple channel-extension to a whole new business model. Based on new theoretical development on the first-mover advantage, we empirically test whether being an early mover in the Internet environment materially affects firm performance, using clickstream data from Korea where broadband Internet installation is ranked as top among OECD countries. Our results show the effectiveness of first-mover advantage on the web does not exist, regardless of its business model and competitive environment. This result expands our understandings on the e-business, not to mention of the real feature of first-mover advantage.

First Mover Advantage Based on Franchising in the Foodservice Industry (외식산업에서 프랜차이징을 통한 선발자 우위에 관한 연구)

  • It is widely accepted that there are first mover advantages in various existing industries. However, few studies have been conducted to evaluate the first mover advantages shown in the foodservice industry, whether first movers practically have first mover advantages, and what effects these advantages have on foodservice enterprises. Specifically this study was designed to identify the relationship between first mover advantages and business performance in the foodservice industry. To accomplish this, questionnaires were sent to and collected from selected first movers consisting of 70 foodservice franchised enterprises. SPSS 15.0 was then employed to conduct factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The analyses revealed that the franchised foodservice enterprises could provide several strategies that enabled them to grow quickly and to establish more shops in their market. In addition, having a greater number of shops resulted in greater advantages when compared to their competitors. Moreover, the advantages of first movers had a significant effect on their business performance. Taken together, these findings imply that if foodservice enterprises franchise their business as early as possible, they can more easily preoccupy their market and enjoy more first mover advantages. This study is meaningful and differentiated from existing studies in that it investigated first mover advantages of the foodservice enterprises in the appropriate industry.

How Does a Tortoise Catch up a Hare? : The Case of Instant Messenger in Korea

  • SK Communications entered Korean instant messenger market as a late-mover in 2001 and its instant messenger service "NateOn" was placed in competition with Microsoft's "MSN Messenger", the leading service provider at the time. NateOn studied the nature of users accurately and gradually increased its market share through various services, and in September 2005, it succeeded in overtaking MSN as No.1 in the market. The success of NateOn is a case where a late-mover overcame the buddy-list network, a powerful competitive advantage, of the incumbent. By studying the changes in the instant messenger market of Korea, we try to examine the causes of NateOn's victory and MSN's loss. Through this, we wish to give implications for managers who endeavor to discover the internal and external strategies the leading business has to implement to remain ahead, and how a late-mover can overcome the lack of resources and capacity to leave a mark in the market.

Does the R&D Subsidy of Developing Countries Overcome the First Mover Advantage of Foreign Firm? (후발국의 보조금정책은 외국기업의 선도자의 이익을 극복하는가?)

  • The Chinese government has been promoting core industries in accordance with the 'Made in China 2025'. As a result of injecting huge subsidies to develop core industries, a great success has been achieved in the electric vehicle and battery industry, however, the semiconductor industry has almost no performance. This study aims to examine whether the subsidy policy of a developing country helps their own domestic firm to overcome the first mover advantage of an advanced country's firm. From the game theoretical analysis, the results have shown that the subsidy policy of the developing country's government creates the profits shifting effect which arises from the developed country's firm to the developing country's firm. When there exists R&D efficiency gap between the two firms, however, most of these profit shifting effects are offset, which implies that the subsidy policy of developing countries is likely to fail.

  • Along with technological innovation, successful market entry of a new product is important for sustainable innovation of a firm. In this paper, we examined factors that affect successful introduction of new branded drugs in pharmaceutical industry. Under competing theories of the first mover's advantage and the late mover's advantage, this research focuses on how latecomers can overcome the disadvantages of late entry and catch up to the market leader. First, late movers can absorb the knowledge leaked from pioneering product during the time lag between early entrants and late entrants. Therefore, the time lag provides late entrants an opportunity to catch-up to market leader by differentiating and improving the quality of new product. Second, superior marketing capability of late entrants can enhance the possibility of catching-up, by overcoming the consumer base of early entrants.

  • Since the third generation (3G) mobile communication service has been launched by most mobile communication operators in Korea, the portion of data service in mobile communication service becomes one of the most important factors in mobile communication service market. In past mobile communication market, most mobile communication operators made their profit mostly from voice communication service. However, the portion of profit from data service has gradually increased based on both video phone call and mobile Internet service. In this situation, LG telecom launched the full browsing mobile Internet service. This service provides a new type of mobile Internet service platform which enables to access the World Wide Web using mobile browsers, so we generally access the Web using web browsers in the desktop computer. Under the open network structure of mobile Internet like situation, it is very important to analyze the factors which can affect the competition between mobile communication service companies. So, in this paper, we first present the current state of full browsing service, followed by the expectation of its growth potentials and barriers. Then, we analyze the advantages and disadvantage of LG telecom as a first-mover and SK telecom/KTF as followers. Finally, based on this analysis, we predict the future competition among these companies and the market.

Entrepreneurship and Market Leadership in Culture Industry (문화산업에서 기업가정신의 발현과 마켓리더십)

  • The culture industry has been considered very important as firms utilize human creativity as the main source for providing high-value-added services. In this industry, the inspirations and ideas of individual creators have been stressed rather than the roles of entrepreneurs so far. However, in recent years, due to the influence of "Hallyu" or the Korean Wave, entrepreneurial firms have actively participated in producing a variety of products embracing cultural value. In this vein, the entrepreneurship-related elements such as the degree of leaders' innovativeness, risk-taking environment, first mover advantage, employee compensation, and tolerance to failure were selected to investigate their effects on market leadership. As a result, it was observed that risk-taking environment, first mover advantage, employee compensation, and tolerance to failure had a positive effect whereas leaders' innovativeness was not statistically meaningful. These findings show that the creation of an atmosphere where employees' creativity can be fully appreciated is more important than the leader' insight-driven innovativeness. The results of this study indicate that when companies formulate strategies and the government initiate policies in the culture industry, entrepreneurship should be incorporated as a crucial element.
