  • The paved areas in nonpoint source are highly polluted landuses because of high imperviousness and high pollutant mass emissions from vehicle activities. Particularly, the metal pollutants are a big issue in the paved area. It is usually washed-off during storms by adsorbing on sediments or soluble status. Therefore, this research was achieved for understanding the characteristics of metal pollutants in stormwater runoff in highways. Five monitoring sites were equipped with an automatic rainfall gage and an automatic flow meter. This manuscripts will summarize the washoff characteristics of metal pollutants and its concentration changes during storms. Usually first flush phenomenon was observed for all of the storm events and visibly confirmed with hydro- and polluto-graphs. Also it was coincided with the tendency of particulates and organic matters. The decrease rate per total reduced amount for metals during initial 30-min storm duration was obtained on 80%. The result may be able to use for determining the economical treatment criteria for stormwater runoff in highways.

  • Urban flooding due to rapid urbanization has recently become frequent. In this study, a hydraulic model experiment was conducted on Shinwol rainwater storage and drainage system constructed for the first time in South Korea to prevent urban flooding. Experiments were preformed for 55 scenarios, of which 19 overflows occurred. In addition, the video analysis for the scenarios where the overflow occurred showd that the overflow occurred during the process of exhausting the pressurized air in the facility and the undular bore were moving. Results of this study, it was judge that it would be advantageous to maintain a completely drained or full-pipe condition for stable operation of the Shinwol rainwater storage and drainage system for continuous rainfall in the future. And it is necessary to additional research on the correlation for the magnitude of inflow discharge, overflow and undular bore.

  • Recent droughts in South Korea have had large economic and environmental impacts across the country. Changes in rainfall and hydrologic patterns due to climate change can potentially increase the occurrence of extreme droughts and affect the future availability of water resources. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate drought vulnerability for water resources planning and management, and identify the appropriate mitigation actions to conduct a drought risk analysis in the context of climate change. The objective of this study is changes in the temporal trends of drought characteristics in South Korea to examine drought impacts under climate change. First, the changes of drought occurrence were analyzed by applying the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) for meteorological data on 54 meteorological stations, and were analyzed for the past 30 years (1981-2010), and Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) climate change scenarios (2011-2100). Second, the changes on the temporal trends of drought characteristics were performed using run theory, which was used to compare drought duration, severity, and magnitude to allow for quantitative evaluations under past and future climate conditions. These results show the high influence of climate change on drought phenomenon, and will contribute to water resources management and drought countermeasures to climate change.

  • Alakline phosphatase activity (AP A) as a phosphorus deficiency measurement in flowing waters and of microhabitats (rocks, wood, leaves, and sediments) was measured and its relationship to flux of nutrients and response to rainfall events were determined for two geologically different streams in west Alabama from August to November. Results indicated water column AP A in both streams had a low correlation with levels of orthophosphate, total organic phosphorus, nitrate, ammonia, dissolved organic carbon, and discharge (r=0.075-0.583; n=g-IU. Communities on rock surfaces showed a higher AP A level than those on wood and leaves. Sediment passed through a $106{\mu}m$ sieve showed 2-9 times higher AP A level than material passed through $425{\mu}m$ sieve. The first storm after drought at Yellow Creek introduced substantial quantities of DOC (2.5 times baseflow concentrations) and $N0_3-N$ (5.8 times baseflow concentrations) which did not affect AP A significantly. The second storm at Little Schultz Creek caused minor changes in nutrient cocentrations; however $N0_3-N$ levels and AP A were drastically lower due to the dilution effect. Retention of stream water AP A at Yellow Creek and Little Schultz Creek on $0.45{\mu}m$ filter (54 and 43%, respectively) and $0.22{\mu}m$ (83 and 77% of total APA. respectively) indicated more free dissolved portion of the enzyme was present at Little Schultz Creek. Little Schultz Creek (with carbonate and with a higher productivity and biomass) showed a consistantly greater AP A activity $(132{\pm}54\;{\mu}M{\cdot}1^{-1}{\cdot}min^{-I};\;n=g)$ than Yellow Creek $(41{\pm}23\;{\mu}M{\cdot}1^{-I}{\cdot}min^{-I}$, with a sandstone substrate; n=l1, $p{\leq}O.OO1)$. Overall, a greater APA on all microhabitats and the presence of more dissolved enzyme in Little Schultz Creek during the study period may indicates it is more P deficient than Yellow Creek.

  • Two dimensional finite element method with quadrilateral basis functions was applied to the spherical high order filter on the spherical surface limited area domain. The basis function consists of four shape functions which are defined on separate four grid boxes sharing the same gridpoint. With the basis functions, the first order derivative was expressed as an algebraic equation associated with nine point stencil. As the theory depicts, the convergence rate of the error for the spherical Laplacian operator was found to be fourth order, while it was the second order for the spherical Laplacian operator. The accuracy of the new high order filter was shown to be almost the same as those of Fourier finite element high order filter. The two-dimension finite element high order filter was incorporated in the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model as a hyper viscosity. The effect of the high order filter was compared with the built-in viscosity scheme of the WRF model. It was revealed that the high order filter performed better than the built in viscosity scheme did in providing a sharper cutoff of small scale disturbances without affecting the large scale field. Simulation of the tropical cyclone track and intensity with the high order filter showed a forecast performance comparable to the built in viscosity scheme. However, the predicted amount and spatial distribution of the rainfall for the simulation with the high order filter was closer to the observed values than the case of built in viscosity scheme.

  • Using 2D numerical analysis that covers the largest section of the dam body, a process is generally performed when evaluating its stability against seepage. The quantity of seepage is first obtained by assuming that its bottom topography is in the simple form of a rectangle, it is then calculated by reflecting its sectional shape during this process of analyzing the seepage quantity. Considering that various forms of dams are being constructed on various types of ground, thanks to more recent technological advances, it is judged more appropriate to draw a conclusion by means of the results on reflecting the realistic shape and topographical conditions of the dam body through 3D numerical analysis. Therefore, this study intends to present a method designed to carry out safety management by evaluating the correct quantity of water leakage that passes only through the dam body, having excluded other factors that include the amount of rainfall through the 3D FEM analysis.

  • Recently, the high speed railway comes into the spotlight as the important and convenient traffic infrastructure. In Korea, Kyung-Bu high speed train service began in about 400km section at 2004, and the Ho-Nam high speed railway will be constructed by 2017. The high speed train will run with a design maximum speed of 300-350km/hr. Since the trains are operated at high speed, the differential settlement of subgrade under the rail is able to cause a fatal disaster. Therefore, the differential settlement of the embankment must be controlled with the greatest care. Furthermore, the characteristics and causes of settlements which occurred under construction and post-construction should be investigated. A considerable number of studies have been conducted on the settlement of the natural ground over the past several decades. But little attention has been given to the compression settlement of the embankment. The long-term settlement of compacted fills embankments is greatly influenced by the post-construction wetting. This is called 'hydro collapse' or 'wetting collapse'. This wetting collapse problem for the compressibility of compacted sands, gravels and rockfills, has been recognized by several researchers. For this wetting settlement problem, we showed the test results carried out with 4 fill materials. These tests were performed under the condition that the fill materials were inundated at the first wetting. Subsequently, in this study, we investigated the long-term settlement characteristics of the fill materials under the repeated partial wetting and rising of the ground water table happend by rainfall.

  • Floods have been known to be one of the main causes of bridge collapse. Contrary to earthquakes, flood events tend to occur repeatedly and more frequently in rainfall areas; flood-induced damage and collapse account for a significant portion of disasters in many countries. Nevertheless, in contrast to extensive research on the seismic fragility analysis for civil infrastructure, relatively little attention has been devoted to the flood-related fragility. The present study proposes a novel methodology for deriving flood fragility curves for bridges. Fragility curves are generally derived by means of structural reliability analysis, and structural failure modes are defined as excessive demands of the displacement ductility of a bridge under increased water pressure resulting from debris accumulation and structural deterioration, which are known to be the primary causes of bridge failures during flood events. Since these bridge failure modes need to be analyzed through sophisticated structural analysis, flood fragility curve derivation that would require repeated finite element analyses may take a long time. To calculate the probability of flood-induced failure of bridges efficiently, in the proposed framework, the first order reliability method (FORM) is employed for reducing the required number of finite element analyses. In addition, two software packages specialized for reliability analysis and finite element analysis, FERUM (Finite Element Reliability Using MATLAB) and ABAQUS, are coupled so that they can exchange their inputs and outputs during structural reliability analysis, and a Python-based interface for FERUM and ABAQUS is newly developed to effectively coordinate the fragility analysis. The proposed framework of flood fragility analysis is applied to an actual reinforced concrete bridge in South Korea to demonstrate the detailed procedure of the approach.

  • The MFFn(Mass First Flush) was analyzed for various rainy events(monitoring data from 2008 to 2009) in Transportation area(Highway, National road, Trunk road). Estimated MFFn using SWMM was evaluated by comparison with observed MFFn. MFFn was estimated by varying n-value from 10% to 90% on the rainy events. The n-value increases, MFFn is closed to '1'. As time passed, the rainfall runoff was getting similar to ratio of pollutants accumulation. The result of a measure of the strength of the linear relationship between observed data and expected data under model was good ($R^2$=0.89). Pollutants runoff loads by volume showed Highway 26.6%, National road 44.8%, Trunk road 35.0% at the MFF20(20% by total runoff). A case of MFF30, pollutants runoff loads by volume showed Highway 40.2%, National road 54.3%, Trunk road 46.8%. According to the results, Initial precipitation basis were Highway MFF30, National road MFF20, Trunk road MFF30 when the Non-Point source control facilities set up.

  • A monthly Ensemble Streamflow Prediction (ESP) system was developed by applying a daily rainfall-runoff model known as the Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation (SSARR) model to the Han, Nakdong, and Seomjin River basins in Korea. This study first assesses the accuracy of the averaged monthly runoffs simulated by SSARR for the 3 basins and proposes some improvements. The study found that the SSARR modeling of the Han and Nakdong River basins tended to significantly underestimate the actual runoff levels and the modeling of the Seomjin River basinshowed a large error variance. However, by implementing optimal linear correction (OLC), the accuracy of the SSARR model was considerably improved in predicting averaged monthly runoffs of the Han and Nakdong River basins. This improvement was not seen in the modeling of the Seomjin River basin. In addition, the ESP system was applied to forecast probabilistic runoff forecasts one month in advance for the 3 river basins from 1998 to 2003. Considerably improvement was also achieved with OLC in probabilistic forecasting accuracy for the Han and Nakdong River basins, but not in that of the Seomjin River basin.
