Sponsored Online Community Types and Participant's Perceived Value

  • The growth of social media has enabled firms to create virtual organizations (online communities) in which value can be co-created with members. Yet, current typologies of firm-sponsored online communities focus either on the firm or participants, and not the interaction between them. This paper provides a systematic review of the online community literature from 2000 to 2018 to develop an understanding of the types of firm-sponsored online communities and the co-creation of value within them. Four types of sponsored online communities are found. These can be differentiated based on the output for the sponsoring firm and the level of self-organization of the communities. This study contributes to the discussion of value co-creation by (i) shedding light on differences among firm-sponsored online community types based on the level and nature of interaction within an online community; and (ii) examining the perceived value co-created through community interactive experiences.

국민연금의 소유지분비율이 기업가치에 미치는 영향 연구: 스튜어드십 코드 도입과 R&D 투자를 중심으로 (Effect of National Pension Service's Shareholding Ratio on Firm Value: Focusing on Stewardship Code Implementation and R&D Expenditure )

  • 본 연구는 국민연금의 소유지분비율과 투자대상기업의 기업가치 간 관계에서, 투자대상기업이 R&D 투자를 늘리도록 독려하여 기업가치의 제고를 간접적으로 꾀할 수 있을 것으로 판단하여 R&D 투자 정도의 매개효과를 분석하였고, 2018년 7월 스튜어드십 코드의 도입에 따라 투자대상회사에 대한 R&D 투자 및 기업가치 향상 압박이 도입 전에 비해 더 커졌을 것으로 판단하여 위 매개효과에 스튜어드십 코드 도입이 미칠 조절효과를 분석하였다. 2016년부터 2021년까지의 한국 상장회사 자료들을 활용하여 분석한 결과, 국민연금의 소유지분비율과 기업가치 간 관계에서 R&D 투자의 부분적 매개효과가 존재하고, 국민연금의 스튜어드십 코드 도입은 소유지분비율과 R&D 투자와의 관계, 소유지분비율과 기업가치와의 관계를 모두 강화시켜 조절효과가 존재함을 확인했다. 이는 국민연금의 스튜어드십 코드 도입 전후에 따라 소유지분비율과 기업가치 간 관계에서 R&D 투자 정도의 매개효과가 달라지는, 조절된 매개효과가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다.

국제회계기준 도입이 기업가치에 영향을 미치는가?: 토빈의 Q 모형을 이용한 한국과 중국의 실증비교연구 (The Impact of IFRS Adoption on Firm Value in Korea and China - Evidence using Tobin's Q)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 국제회계기준을 도입함에 있어 상이한 도입과정을 보인 한국과 중국을 대상으로 하여 국제회계기준의 도입효과를 비교분석하는 것이다. 한국은 2011년부터 일시에 국제회계기준을 도입하였으나, 중국은 2007년부터 국제회계기준의 적용범위를 순차적으로 확대하고 자국의 회계기준과 일치시키기 위한 개정작업을 지속하는 등 점진적인 도입양상을 보였다. 이처럼 양국의 국제회계기준 수용과정 상의차이는 양국의 회계기준 변경 효과 측면에서도 차이를 발생시킬 것으로 기대하였으며 본 연구의 실증분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국의 경우 토빈의 Q값이 국제회계기준 도입이전 기간에 비해 도입이후 기간에 통계적으로 유의하게 증대되는 것으로 확인되었다. 둘째, 중국의 경우 토빈의 Q값이 전반적으로 증대되는 추세에 있는 것으로 나타났으나 국제회계기준을 전후하여 유의한 차이는 확인되지 않았다. 본 연구는 국제회계기준의 도입효과를 검증함에 있어 국가별 도입과정의 이해가 중요함을 밝혔다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

Trade Linkage and Transmission of Geopolitical Risks: Evidence from the Peace Progress in 2018

  • Purpose - Using unexpected changes in geopolitical tensions on the Korean peninsula as a quasi-natural experimental setting, we examine whether and how geopolitical risks travel across borders through firm-level imports and exports linkages. We also test whether the effects are driven by either imports or exports and assess whether firms can effectively hedge themselves against geopolitical risks. Design/methodology - We focus on a series of unanticipated geopolitical events taken place in Korea in 2018. Making use of the shocks to geopolitical climate, we identify five milestone events toward peace talks. We employ the event studies methodology. We examine heterogenous firm-level stock price reactions around key event dates depending on firms' exposure to geopolitical risks. As a measure of firms' exposure to geopolitical risks in Korea, we utilize a text-based measure of firm-level trade links. When a firm announces and discusses its purchase of inputs from Korea or sales of outputs to Korea in their annual disclosure filings, we define a firm to have a trade relationship with Korea and have exposure to Korean geopolitical risks. Similarly, we use a measure of a firm's hedging policies based on a firm's textual mention of the use of foreign exchange derivatives in their annual disclosure. Findings - We find that U.S. firms that have direct trade links to Korea gained significantly more value when the intensity of geopolitical risks drops compared to firms without such trade links to Korea. The effects are pronounced for firms purchasing inputs from or selling outputs to Korea. We find that the effectiveness of foreign exchange hedging against geopolitical risks is limited. Originality/value - We document the international transmission of geopolitical uncertainty through trade linkages. Export links as well as import links serve as important nexus of transmission of geopolitical risks across borders. Hedging strategies involving foreign-exchanges derivatives do not seem to insulate firms again geopolitical risks. With the recent movements of localization and reshuffling of the global value chain, our results suggest a significant impact of geopolitical risks in Korea on the construction of the global value chain.

The Nexus Between Islamic Label and Firm Value: Evidence From Cross Country Panel Data

  • This research uses a panel data set of selected developed and emerging economies to investigate the relationship between firm value and the Islamic label. A low-debt company is a proxy for excellent governance, and good governance has a significant positive impact on a company's valuation. We can claim that the Islamic label may also be a proxy for excellent governance and will significantly impact a company's economic value because it reflects low debt Sharia-compliant companies. To explore this relationship, cross-country data from non-financial enterprises in Pakistan, the United States, Malaysia, and Indonesia was acquired from 2010 to 2015. The study's findings indicate that the Islamic label has a positive significant impact on the firm's worth in the whole sample, including all countries. With the exception of the United States, we have also collected the same information at the country level. We also discovered that the corporate governance index at the firm level has a positive significant impact on firm value. The findings show that the Islamic label reflects good governance and hence can be used as a proxy for good governance. The analysis differentiates between Islamic labeled and conventional enterprises in developed and emerging nations, adding to our understanding of who contributes to enhanced corporate financial performance.

  • Technological innovation is one of the critical success factors determining firm's Technological innovation is one of the critical success factors determining firm's value in the knowledge based economy. The study examines whether the information release on technological innovation has information contents in the stock market. The abnormal returns and cumulative abnormal return were calculated by using Market and Risk Adjusted Return Model. The results say that the market positively reacts to the information release of technological innovation on the event date. Especially, the disclosure on technology development causes stable increase of the firm's value. It is concluded that the market reacts favorably to technological innovations.

벤처기업의 내생적 성장이 기업가치에 미치는 영향 (Endogenous Growth and Firm Value of Venture Companies)

  • 본 연구에서는 코스닥 증권시장에 상장된 벤처기업을 대상으로 내생적 성장 연구개발비가 기업가치에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 연구방법은 실증연구방법을 택하였으며, 다중회귀분석을 이용하여 코스닥에 상장된 벤처기업을 대상으로 검증을 실시하였다. 분석결과 벤처기업의 내생적 성장 연구개발비가 기업규모에 양(+)의 유의한 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 반면 유형자산과 광고선전비 및 교육훈련비 등은 음(-)의 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 벤처기업의 기업규모가 기업가치에 양(+)의 유의한 영향을 보인 것은 기술개발을 중점적으로 추진하는 벤처기업의 특성상 내생적 성장 무형자산이 기업가치에 유의적인 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 해석된다. 결론적으로 코스닥 등록 벤처기업의 내생적 성장 연구개발비와 기업가치 간에는 양(+)의 상관관계를 갖고 있는 것으로 검증되었고, 벤처기업은 개발비 등 무형자산에 대한 투자가 집중되는 기업의 특성으로 인하여 벤처기업의 기업규모(총자산)가 기업가치에 양(+)의 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다.

제도적 압력이 중국 기업의 순응 수준 및 기업 가치에 미치는 영향: 제도이론과 이해관계자이론을 중심으로 (The Effect of Institutional Pressure on Firm's Compliance and Financial Performance in China: Focused on Institutional Theory and Stakeholder Theory)

  • This study aimed to understand the relationships among the institutional pressure and the level of compliance and corporate value. The research focuses on four main variables, which are regulatory pressure, normative pressure, and cultural-cognitive pressure as the institutional pressure, and the CSR score as the level of the firm's compliance. We examined the impact of the institutional pressure on the firm's compliance-level, together with the effect of compliance level on the corporate value. We analyzed the 3,792 CSR data listed in China's A market and 31 province and city-level data from China. Results showed that institutional pressure had a positive influence on the firm's compliance level. The corporate value was greater with a high compliance level when the institutional pressure was high. The firm's compliance level negatively influenced corporate value when the institutional pressure was low. This study took into account a level of institutional pressures in three dimensions when investigating the effect of CSR compliance level on the corporate value. Thus, this study has a unique academic contribution by demonstrating that CSR activities can have a positive or negative effect depending on the institutional environment for each firm. The findings of this study also provide valuable insights to industry practitioners by suggesting the importance of considering the institution-specific condition when deciding to comply with the institutional pressure.

The Contingent Effect of Marketing Alliances on Firm Profitability

  • Forming interfirm collaborative relationships has become a key aspect of a firm's marketing strategies to create value for customers and achieve greater firm performance. While empirical findings are mixed in previous studies, this study is an effort to identify boundary conditions for the benefits of marketing alliances. We investigate internal and environmental factors that may magnify or constrain the effect of marketing alliances on firm profitability. Given the complementary relationship between marketing and R&D activities, we focus on a firm's R&D intensity as an internal factor that may magnify the value of marketing alliances for firm performance. For environmental factors, we focus on industry turbulence and industry competitiveness. Industry turbulence refers to the degree to which industry market conditions change quickly and unpredictably, whereas industry competitiveness refers to the degree to which a firm faces competition in the industry. By testing these factors, we are intended to reveal boundary conditions that determine the value of marketing alliances for firm profitability. The analysis of firms in the diverse industries shows that while the main effect of marketing alliances on firm profitability is not significant, it becomes more positive when R&D investment is more intensive or when industry environment is more turbulent. The results of this study imply that just forming more marketing alliances may not be enough to increase firm profitability. Our findings imply that marketing alliances become more effective in a dynamically changing industry environment. That is, firms can cope with industry uncertainties more effectively by forming marketing alliances. At the same time, the moderating effect of R&D intensity implies that the internal investments in R&D magnify the effect of marketing alliances on firm profitability. The findings of this study contributes to the existing alliance literature in three aspects. First, this study enhances our understanding of the contingent value of marketing alliances by testing both internal and external factors that may influence the effectiveness of marketing alliances. Second, this study responds to the need for research that investigates actual performance resulting from interfirm relationships. Third, while previous studies primarily focused on a specific industry, this study extend previous findings of the boundary conditions for the benefits of marketing alliances in a broader context.

GMM Panel VAR를 이용하여 R&D가 기업 가치에 영향을 미치기까지의 시간 측정 연구 (Analysis of R&D Time Lag in impacting Firm Value: GMM- PVAR Study)

  • R&D 연구 투자의 문제점의 하나는 불확실성이 크다는 점이다. 이러한 불확실성이 기업에는 많은 부담을 주는 요인이 될 수 있다. 이러한 면에서 R&D 투자가 기업 가치에 양(+)의 영향을 미치기까지의 시간을 측정할 수 있는 연구의 필요성이 있다고 보여진다. 본 연구는 GMM-PVAR(Panel Vector Autoregression) IRF(Impulse Response function)를 사용하여 1900년부터 2015년까지 한국거래소의 코스피와 코스닥시장에 상장된 기업을 대상으로 R&D 투자가 기업가치에 양(+)의 영향을 미치기까지 걸리는 시간을 측정 하였다. 또한 기업의 재무적 특성 변수 중 기업의 크기, 성장 가능성, 그리고 산업 집중율이 R&D 투자가 기업가치에 양(+) 영향을 미치기까지 걸리는 시간을 단축시킨다는 점을 발견하였다. 그것은 이들 재무적 특성변수 들이 R&D 투자와 기업가치간의 관계에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠수록 즉 경쟁이 심화될수록 크기가 클수록 시간이 단축되며 작은 기업의 경우는 성장 가능성이 높을수록 시간이 단축되는 경향을 보였다. 흥미 있는 점은 큰 기업들의 경우에는 성장가능성이 낮은 기업들이 성장가능성이 높은 기업들보다 더 큰 양의 결과를 보였다.
