The use of on-premises technology in the business environment to create a competitive advantage is ushering in a new era known as digital transformation. As the foundation of digital transformation of enterprises, information technology still has a paradoxical effect on enterprises. This paper documents the effect of investments in IT on a firm's long-term profitability performance measures as return on assets (ROA), as well as tests whether the earlier entrant and the later entrant are different in IT investment performance. Using a sample of China's public firms IT investment data between 2016 and 2019, the result indicates that IT investment in firms have a positive effect on firm performance in full sample, but not in the financial industry firms. When it comes to the different investment time, the result shows no significant difference between the earlier entrant firm and the later entrant firm in the full sample, but not in the case of software industry sample. This should help alleviate the concerns that some have expressed about the viability of digital transformation given the highly publicized IT investment and implementation problems at some firms.

Purpose - We examine the disclosures on foreign divestment from China by 77 Korean firms between 2007 and 2016 to identify the effects (and their determinants) on parent firm value. Design/methodology - We analyze how divestment affects firm value by examining the disclosure of divestment from China by Korean firms. Then, we examine the determinants of these disclosure effects using cross-sectional regression analyses. Findings - We find negative effects on parent firm value in the short and medium term, and both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ stock markets show negative correlations between foreign divestment and firm value. The parent firm's financial condition and profitability and the reason for divesting are statistically significant determinants. Practical implications - Most Korean firms in China belong to the manufacturing industry. As a result, divestment signifies a loss of important manufacturing bases and assets. Originality/value - We analyze foreign direct divestment, which has not been studied in detail previously owing to a lack of data. In addition, this research is the first to compare the disclosure effects in the KOSPI market with those in the KOSDAQ market for the same period.

The study aims to investigate the impact level of earnings quality on firm value. The study has used data with 3,910 observations at listed firms on Vietnam Stock Exchange for the period from 2010 to 2018, and GLS regression analysis is employed in this research. Earnings quality is measured in the aspects of earnings management, earnings persistence, and timeliness of profitability. This study also considers a number of controlled variables that positively influence the firm's value such as firm size, fixed asset investment rate and dividend payout ratio. The results show that earnings quality is positively associated with firm value with having statistical significance. In contrast, some determinants negatively influence firm value such as financial leverage, ratio of market value to book value, and revenue growth. Determinants of firm size, the rate of investment in fixed assets, the rate of dividend payment positively affect the firm value. In contrast, determinants of financial leverage, revenue growth rate and market value to book value ratio are inversely related to firm value according to economic value, Tobin's Q or Price. Based on the findings, some recommendations are proposed for investors, management and policy makers as well in the context of emerging countries including Vietnam.

The construction and real estate industries contribute significantly to each country's economic development. Strong construction and real estate firms will contribute more to the country's GDP by contributing to the industry's development. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that influence the performance of the construction and real estate sectors in Vietnam. A survey of 200 construction and real estate firms in different areas was conducted from 2020 until the end of 2021. Following the removal of errors, the author got 196 replies, 6 of which were invalid, leaving 190 votes for quantitative analysis. The research findings show that elements such as (1) senior executives' commitment to the organization, and (2) the ability to use technology have a positive and significant impact on firm performance when using advanced econometric analysis. Furthermore, in the case of Hanoi, Vietnam, business relationships have a positive impact on firm performance. Training and development, as well as the working environment and incentives, have little effect on the profitability of construction and real estate firms. Finally, the research also has some recommendations and limitations for the construction and real estate sector.

This study examines the influence of working capital management (WCM) factors on the profitability of steel companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Vietnam. Data was collected from audited financial statements of companies for a period of 10 years, from 2010 to 2019. The number of samples eligible for research is 20 out of 26 companies, which is equivalent to 76.9%. With the help of dedicated software Stata version 14, the impact determination of WCM (through 8 independent variables: DIO, DPO, DSO, CCC, SIZ, CR, LEV, GRO) to the firm's profitability (through the dependent variable) is performed through multivariate regression models. Research results from companies in the steel industry in Vietnam during this period indicate that WCM has a strong impact on the profitability of businesses. Among 8 factors affecting the profitability of steel enterprises, factors DPO, DIO, DSO, CR, SIZ, GRO have a positive impact, boosting profitability; 2 factors CCC and LEV have a negative impact on profitability; in which, the effect of CCC is negligible. This conclusion is almost in contrast to many previously published studies due to the specifics of the industry as well as the different stages of economic development associated with the economic management policies of the State.
Purpose - The purpose of the study is to examine the relationships among the following retail operations variables: retail store operations (i.e., store management, sales personnel, promotion of merchandise), success of assortment planning, firm performance (i.e., market share, overall competitive position, profitability, product quality, consumer satisfaction), and retail buyer's demographics and firm's characteristics. Research design, data, and methodology - After conducting a pilot test, the survey was conducted in Seoul, South Korea. With using the listwise deletion method, 378 usable data sets were analyzed. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) methods were employed. Results - As evidenced from the path diagram, the relationship between retail store operations and the success of assortment planning is strong and significant. Retail store operations affect firm performance, though at a weaker significance than it affects the success of assortment planning. The relationship between the success of assortment planning and firm performance, is the strongest relationship observed by this research. Conclusions - The findings of this empirical study contribute to the retail/fashion buying/management field by confirming (a) the importance of assortment planning for retail firm performance and (b) the role of store operations for successful assortment planning and firm performance for fashion retailers.

This study investigates the following important financial questions using entertainment enterprises: 1) how does cash reserve affect a firm's financial value? 2) what factors influence the level of cash retention of a firm? For empirical tests, we use accounting and financial data of entertainment companies listed in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets for a long-term time period covering from 2000 to 2018. The main findings of this paper are as follows: First, entertainment companies maintain higher level of cash holdings compared to non-entertainment companies. Second, the cash holdings of entertainment enterprises have positive influence on firms' financial value. Third, among various firm characteristics known for affecting the cash holdings level, leverage and profitability exhibit strong relationships in entertainment enterprises. Entertainment firms with lower leverage and higher profitability tend to reserve more cash inside them. These findings suggest that entertainment companies are highly valued by stock market participants as having prospective opportunities, thus, firms with sufficient cash holdings tend to have higher firm value. In addition, these findings imply that cash in entertainment enterprises functions as a substitute for debts and the cash holdings are less likely driven by agency problems.
Purpose - The study analyzed 90 online firms worldwise and observed them for ten years to investigate their investments and firm performance variabilities. This study attemped to verify the existence of agency problems in online firms. Through this, the paper intends to expand the scope of research in the fields of investment and firm value both empirically and in theory. This study also attempted to supplement the insufficient logic of previous studies by analyzing the relationship between investment and profitability. Design/methodology - In this study, the investment is subdivided into over-, under-, and neutral investments, and an empirical analysis of the firm performance was conducted. As investment generally has long-term effects, the impact of a firm's investment on future firm performance and variabilities in firm performance was considered over the short-and medium-term period. Findings - It was found that there was a negative relationship between firms with an overinvestment and future firm performance. Underinvestment has no clear statistically significant results on firm performance. This implies that overinvestment causes more reduction in future firm performance than underinvestment. It was also found that underinvestment and overinvestment significantly increased the variability of firm performance. A positive significance was found between under- and over- investment with a variability of 3 years and overinvestment with a variability of 4 years in the future. A negative relationship was found between neutral investment propensity and future performance variabilities. Neutral investment has less effect on the future performance variability of a firm than a firm's overinvestment and underinvestment. For online firms, underinvestment and overinvestment have a greater effect on the firm's future performance variability than neutral investment. Originality/value - The agency theory predicts that information asymmetry and adverse selection problems exacerbate conflicts of interest among stakeholders, thus firm performance. The study contributed to accumulating research on online firms that are currently underexplored by analyzing the investment behavior of major firms in the online industry.
Purpose: This study's objective is to examine the impact of firm-specific and macroeconomic factors on the business performance of non-cyclical and cyclical sectors in Indonesian listed firms. The evaluation of business performance holds paramount importance for the achievement and long-term viability of a company. Research Design Data and Methodology: The data for 61 non-cyclicals sector companies and 57 cyclicals sector companies was gathered over a 4-year period from 2018-2021. The model integrates firm size, leverage, and sales growth as firm-specific factors, with real GDP growth and inflation rate as macroeconomic variables. ROA and ROE are indicators of a firm's business performance. The regression models are estimated using the distribution of a dynamic approach with Arellano-Bond Panel Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation. Results: The results of the pooled sample indicate that the historical ROA and ROE have a positive relationship with the business performance of all sectors, including both non-cyclical and cyclical industries. The ROE of non-cyclical enterprises is primarily influenced by firm-specific characteristics and macroeconomic influences. Conclusion: To ensure the successful implementation of the distribution of a dynamic approach towards enhancing corporate business performance, organizations need to take into account a combination of firm-specific factors and macroeconomic factors.
