  • Objectives : Indirect contact with trauma may occur when a person empathically listens to detailed descriptions, exposing the person to intense emotional pain from trauma victims. Although less severe than direct trauma, indirectly traumatized persons may experience the same fear, rage, and despair as direct trauma victims. This phenomenon has been variously termed vicarious trauma, traumatic countertransference, burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress. Using a psychiatric symptoms questionnaires, this study investigated the effects of indirect exposure to co-worker's trauma on the mental health of firefighters who had not directly experienced traumatic events in the previous year. Methods : We administered self-report questionnaires, such as the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IESR) and Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), to firefighters working at two fire stations in a metropolitan city. We analyzed 188 of 232 collected surveys, after excluding falsely entered data (28 cases) and questionnaires by directly-traumatized victims (16 cases). Results : Alcohol consumption and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, as determined by the AUDIT and IES-R, were significantly higher in the indirectly-traumatized group. The ratio of high-risk members scoring higher than 23 in IES-R was larger in the indirectly traumatized group, although this was not statistically significant. Conclusion : Alcohol consumption was significantly higher in the indirectly traumatized group. This group also included more members at high risk for PTSD. Further research, with a larger group of indirectly traumatized firefighters and ongoing investigation of PTSD development and other psychiatric symptoms, is needed.

  • This paper investigates experimentally the fire resistance performance and spatting resistance of high performance reinforced concrete column member subjected to fire containing polypropylene fiber(PP fiber) and cellulose fiber(CL fiber). An increase in PP fiber and CL fiber contents, respectively resulted in a reduction of fluidity due to fiber ball effect. Air content is constant with m increase in fiber content. Compressive strength reached beyond 50 MPa. Based on fire resistance test, severe failure occurred with control concrete specimen, which caused exposure of reinforcing bar. No spall occurred with specimen containing PP fiber. This is due to the discharge of internal vapour pressure. Use of CL fiber superior to control concrete in the side of spatting resistance, localized failure at comer of specimen was observed. Corner of specimen had deeper neutralization than surface of specimen. Specimen containing PP fiber had the least damaged area due to spatting. Neutralization depth ranged between 6 and 8 mm Residual compressive strength of specimen containing PP fiber maintained 40%, which is larger than control concrete with 20% of residual strength. Specimen containing CL fiber had 25% or residual strength.

  • The determination of the depth of deteriorated concrete is one of the main problems in the structural assessment of concrete structures that have been subjected to a fire. This information is particularly important in order to optimize the future operations of repair/strengthening, or in decision-making concerning a possible demolition. The purpose of this study is to propose evaluation technique of damaged depth of concrete exposed at high temperature. In order to evaluate damaged depth of core picked at member under fire, the 24 specimens have been made with variables of concrete strength(20 MPa, 40 MPa, 60 MPa) and heating exposure condition in 600 and 800 for 2 hours. Color change analysis and water absorption after heating have been measured and split tensile stress test was performed to ka the residual compressive strength against the depth of specimen. The results show that the deeper of the depth from heating face, water absorption ratio is smaller and residual stress ratio is larger and the color of heated face is changed to red color. Using this technique at damage evaluation of fired structure, We evaluate damaged depth of member under fire and determine the reasonable strengthening range.

  • A research was conducted to develop a 2-D nonlinear Galerkin finite element analysis of reinforced concrete structures subjected to high temperature with experiments. Algorithms for calculating the closed-form element stiffness for a triangular element with a fully populated material conductance are developed. The validity of the numerical model used in the program is established by comparing the prediction from the computer program with results from full-scale fire resistance tests. Details of fire resistance experiments carried out on reinforced concrete slabs, together with results, are presented. The results obtained from experimental test indicated in that the proposed numerical model and the implemented codes are accurate and reliable. The changes in thermal parameters are discussed from the point of view of changes of structure and chemical composition due to the high temperature exposure. The proposed numerical model takes into account time-varying thermal loads, convection and radiation affected heat fluctuation, and temperature-dependent material properties. Although, this study considered standard fire scenario for reinforced concrete slabs, other time versus temperature relationship can be easily incorporated.

  • To enhance the energy saving and comfort of indoors, this study performed a stimulation of sound fluctuation, color temperature, and aroma. The experiment with EEG, HRV, and Vibra images was conducted in an environmental test room with a temperature of $25[^{\circ}C]$, relative humidity of 50[RH%], air current speed of 0.002[m/s], and illuminance of 1000[lux]. The stimulation experiment set up different sensory stimulation conditions, such as before exposure, single-sensory stimulation of fluctuation a=1.106 jazz music, single-sensory stimulation of RED color lighting, single-sensory stimulation of scent aroma, and multi-sensory stimulation of fluctuation a=1.106 jazz music, RED color lighting, and scent aroma. After the multi-sensory stimulation of fluctuation a=1.106 jazz music, RED color lighting and scent aroma, the capacity for work and attention were increased, and the stress index and fatigue degree were decreased. In addition, multi-sensory stimulation of fluctuation a=1.106 jazz music, RED color lighting, and scent aroma were effective in maintaining a stable heart and health. In addition, the Vibra image appeared to decrease tension/anxiety and stress. The multi-sensory stimulation of fluctuation a=1.106 jazz music, RED color lighting, and scent aroma help increase the Neuro-energy more than that by no exposure and single-sensory stimulation.

  • The number of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles have increased gradually by virtue of korea government's urban air quality improvement policy since 1998. Although the use of CNG as transportation fuel gives environmental benefits, there is a possibility of huge accidents from unexpected fire. Therefore, needs for the guarantee of safety are indispensible for the reliable operation of CNG vehicles. A check valve is a safety device which prevents leakage of the pressurized fuel charged in a fuel tank. Durability of this component should be guaranteed in spite of repeated operation. This research has performed durability tests of a CNG check valve regarding the repeated usage, extreme chattering, and the effect of compressor oil.Although a check valve used for CNG vehicle satisfies validation requirements in the test results, it has been found that problem in the function of leakage prevention in a check valve could take place in the case of prolonged exposure to compressor oil.

  • Chemical sensors are used in various industrial facilities such high-risk and prevent the leakage of substances, important in life and environmental protection and the safe use of industry, used for management. In particular, high-temperature environments such as power generation equipment of the rotating part due to leakage generated by the various oil, power plants Shut Down, fire, work environment (exposure to various chemical solution and gas leak) and various water, air and soil pollution causes. Thus, over the long term through various channels such as crops and groundwater contamination caused by the slow, serious adverse effect on the ecosystem. In this paper, synthetic lube oil and high pressure hydraulic fluid leakage and immediately detect a new Printed Electronic implementation of technology-based film-type sensors, and its performance test. Thus, industrial accidents and environmental pollution and for early detection of problems, large accidents can be prevented. Experimental results of the synthetic lube oil and high pressure hydraulic fluid solution after the contact time depending on the experiment and the oil solution of the sensor material of the conductive porous PE resistance value by a chemical reaction could be confirmed that rapid increase. Also implemented in the film-type oil sensor electrical resistance change over time of the reaction rate and the synthetic lube oil is about 2 minutes or less, the high pressure hydraulic fluid is less than about 1 minute was. Therefore, more high-pressure hydraulic fluid such as a low volatility synthetic lube oils are the resistance change and the reaction rate was confirmed to be the slowest.

  • Diatomaceous earth, quarried from the remains of aquatic plants deposited millions of years ago, continues to be a very important raw material with many industrial uses. In its natural state, diatomaceous earth is an amorphous silica with no crystalline pattern. For many uses, however, it is calcinated and calcination converts a portion of the amorphous silica to a crystalline form, cristobalite which is far more fibrogenic. In a factory which produces calcinated diatomaceous earth, seven workers were proved as pneumoconiosis on 1991 and 1992. Authors reviewed medical chart and current status of them. Authors also examined thirty one subjects from the factory with questionnaire, physical examination, spirometry and chest radiography on August 13th 1993. The radiographs were independently interpreted by two radiologists and their findings were classified by International Classification of Radiography of Pneumoconiosis(ILO, 1980). Total and respirable dust of diatomaceous earth were measured on October 1993. The results were as follows; 1. Of 31 workers, 6 (19.4%) were diagnosed as diatomaceous earth pneumoconiosis. There was an increasing tendency in prevalence of pneumoconiosis as the duration of dust exposure gets longer. 2. There were no significant differences in age, smoking rate, alcohol drinking rate, and pulmonary function test results between cases and non-cases. 3. The means of total dust exposures at flour manufacturing, fire brick grinding and packaging, ceramic raws packaging processes exceeded Korean and ACGIH standards, $10mg/m^3$. Above results suggest that engineering controls, periodic environmental and medical surveillance are important for preventing pneumoconiosis in the diatomite factory.

  • Objective : This study investigated the relationship between the resilience and posttraumatic stress symptoms, as well as comorbid symptoms in firefighters. Methods : We collected 764 firefighters, who worked at six fire department stations in Gangwon-do. We investigated the impact of event scale-revised (IES-R), the life events checklists (LEC), Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC), Beck depression inventory (BDI), state trait anxiety inventory (STAI) and alcohol use disorder identification test (AUDIT). Full PTSD groups, partial PTSD groups and non-PTSD groups, which were classified by IES-R scores, were compared in the LEC, CD-RISC, BDI, STAI and AUDIT, ; multiple linear regression analyses were done for independent predictors of variables. Results : Of the 764 firefighters, there were significant differences in LEC (p<0.001), CD-RISC (p<0.001), BDI (p<0.001), and AUDIT (p=0.001) among the full PTSD groups, partial PTSD groups and non-PTSD groups. However, STAI did not show significant difference among three groups. In multiple regression analysis, CD-RISC (${\beta}=-0.168$, p<0.001), LEC (${\beta}=0.211$, p<0.001) and AUDIT (${\beta}=0.115$, p=0.001) were significant predictors for IES-R. Conclusion : The results of the present study suggested that resilience might be a protective factor in PTSD and comorbid symptoms of PTSD.
