This paper presents a the study on air curtain system of top and bottom bi-directional jet air discharge for blocking the spread of smoke in case of tunnel fire. The five kinds different air curtains of A, B, C, D, and E of models for various performance tested after manufactured. A results of the various performance test obtained the best efficiency from E model air curtain. And optimize the injection angle of the air curtain nozzle through the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis and analyzed the effects of external pressure of tunnel. and also single factor design have been applied. At present, our attention is focused on the velocity distribution(flow width and flow position) of 1.5m on the ground in tunnel. Also, analyzed the influence of draft in the tunnel. Detailed effects of discharge angle of air curtain and velocity at nozzle exit are discussed.
The analysis of characteristics of turbulent flow and thermal boundary layer for natural convection caused by fire along vertical wall is performed. The 4m-high vertical copper plate is heated and kept at a uniform surface temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ and the surrounding fluid (air) is kept at $16.5^{\circ}C$. The flow and temperature is solved by large eddy simulation(LES) of FDS code(Ver.6), in which the viscous-sublayer flow is calculated by Werner-Wengle wall function. The whole analyzed domain is assumed as turbulent region to apply wall function even through the laminar flow is transient to the turbulent flow between $10^9$<$Gr_z$<$10^{10}$ in experiments. The various grids from $7{\times}7{\times}128$ to $18{\times}18{\times}128$ are applied to investigate the sensitivity of wall function to $x^+$ value in LES simulation. The mean velocity and temperature profiles in the turbulent boundary layer are compared with experimental data by Tsuji & Nagano and the results from other LES simulation in which the viscous-sublayer flow is directly solved with many grids. The relationship between heat transfer rate($Nu_z$) and $Gr_zPr$ is investigated and calculated heat transfer rates are compared with theoretical equation and experimental data.
An efficient large eddy simulation algorithm is used to compute surface pressure distributions on an eleven story (target) building on the NIST campus. Local meteorology, neighboring buildings, topography and large vegetation (trees) all play an important part in determining the flows and therefore the pressures experienced by the target. The wind profile imposed at the upstream surface of the computational domain follows a power law with an exponent representing a suburban terrain. This profile accounts for the flow retardation due to friction from the surface of the earth, but does not include fluctuations that would naturally occur in this flow. The effect of neighboring buildings on the time dependent surface pressures experienced by the target is examined. Comparison of the pressure fluctuations on the single target building alone with those on the target building in situ show that, owing to vortices shed by the upstream buildings, fluctuations are larger when such buildings are present. Even when buildings are lateral to or behind the target, the pressure disturbances generate significantly different flows around this building. A simple grid-free mathematical model of a tree is presented in which the trunk and the branches are each represented by a collection of spherical particles strung together like beads on a string. The drag from the tree, determined as the sum of the drags of the component particles, produces an oscillatory, spreading wake of slower fluid, suggesting that the behavior of trees as wind breakers can be modeled usefully.
The present study examined the free surface flow of a liquid sheet near a sprinkler head using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model and considered the feasibility of the empirical model for predicting the initial spray characteristics of the sprinkler head through a comparison of the CFD results. The CFD calculation for a simplified sprinkler geometry considering the nozzle and deflector were performed using the commercially available CFD package, CFX 14.0 with the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and theVolume of Fluid (VOF) method. The predicted velocity of the empirical model at the edge of deflector were in good agreement with that of the CFD model for the flat plate region but there was a certain discrepancy between the two models for the complex geometry region. The mean droplet diameter predicted by the empirical model differed significantly from the measured value of the real sprinkler head. On the other hand, the empirical model can be used to understand the mechanism of droplet formation near the sprinkler head and predict the initial spray characteristics for cases without experimental data.

Computational study of a gravity current prior to the backdraft was conducted using fire dynamic simulator (FDS). Various initial conditions of mixture compositions and compartment temperature as well as four opening geometries (Horizontal, Door, Vertical, and Full opening) were considered to figure out their effects on the gravity current. The density difference ratio (${\beta}$) between inside and outside of compartment, the gravity current time ($t_{grav}$) and velocity ($v_{grav}$), and non-dimensional velocity ($v^*$) were introduced to quantify the flow characteristics of the gravity current. Overall fluid structure of the gravity current at the fixed opening geometry showed similar development process for different ${\beta}$ conditions. However, $t_{grav}$ for entering air to reach the opposed wall to the opening geometry increased with ${\beta}$. Door, Vertical, and Horizontal openings where openings are attached on the ground showed similar development process of the gravity current except for Horizontal opening, which located on the middle of the opening wall. The magnitude of $v_{grav}$ at fixed ${\beta}$ was, from largest to smallest, Full > Vertical > Door > Horizontal, but it depended on both the size and location of the opening. On the other hand, $v^*$ was found to be independent to ${\beta}$, and only depended on the geometry of the opening.
A numerical study was conducted to investigate the effects of the spray characteristics of water mist on the attenuation of thermal radiation. The attenuation process of the thermal radiation, generated from a hot surface panel, passing through the water mist was calculated via Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), and the effects of the flow rate, droplet mean diameter, and spray injecting angle of the water mist were analyzed. The results indicated that the increase in flowrate and decrease in droplet size led to an increase in the attenuation of thermal radiation. As the thermal radiation passed through the spray droplets, the effect of the spatial distribution of spray droplets was verified by calculating the thermal radiation attenuation at different spray injecting angles. The results indicated that the radiation attenuation increases as the spray angle increases. This implies that a wider distribution of spray droplets, irrespective of the droplet size and flowrate, increases the attenuation effect on thermal radiation.
Lots of orders of special vessels and offshore plants for developing the resources in deepwater have been increased in recent. Because the most of accidents on those structures are caused by fire and explosion, many researchers have been investigated quantitatively to predict the cause and effect of fire and explosion based on both experiments and numerical simulations. The first step of the evaluation procedures leading to fire and explosion is to predict the dispersion of flammable or toxic material, in which the released material mixes with surrounding air and be diluted. In particular turbulent mixing, but density differences due to molecular weight or temperature as well as diffusion will contribute to the mixing. In the present paper, the numerical simulation of hydrogen dispersion inside a simple-shaped offshore structure was performed using a commercial CFD program, ANSYS-CFX. The simulated results for concentration of released hydrogen are compared to those of experiment and other simulation in Jordan et al.(2007). As a result, it is seen that the present simulation results are closer to the experiments than other simulation ones. Also it seems that the hydrogen dispersion is closely related to turbulent mixing and the selection of the turbulence model properly is significantly of importance to the reproduction of dispersion phenomena.

The subway used by many passengers is required to maintain a safe and comfortable environment and PSD (Platform Screen Door) must be installed in the platform after reinforcing the standard in 2003. In the previous research, in case of subway fire to control it, it is necessary to design the optimal ventilation and smoke exhaust system according to equipment capacity of the smoke exhaust system. Therefore, in this study, based on the results of previous research, three-dimensional numerical analysis was performed for the CO gas and smoke flow by the subway ventilation system in case of platform fire. As a result of this study, it was found that in case of emergency, if only the upper-level smoke exhaust system is activated, the risk of evacuation is high due to CO gas (653.8 ppm) and smoke concentration ($768.4mg/m^3$). And when all the smoke exhaust systems are activated and only the fire side PSD is opened, CO gas (36.0 ppm) and smoke concentration ($26.2mg/m^3$) are detected and the propagation range of smoke flow was reduced. When all the smoke exhaust systems are activated and only the fire side PSD is closed, it was analyzed as the most effective ventilation mode in the evacuation environment due to the absence of smoke-recirculation.
In Part 1, the flame structure of the counterflow nonpremixed flames computed by using Fire Dynamics Simulator was compared with that of OPPDIF for different concentrations of methane in the fuel stream. In this study, comparisons were made for the global strain rate that is an important parameter for diffusion flames for further evaluation of FDS. At each of the three fuel concentrations, $20% CH_4+ 80% N_2, 50% CH_4 + 50% N_2, 90% CH_4 + 10% N_2$ in the fuel stream, the temperature and axial velocity profiles were investigated for the global strain rate in the range from 20 to $100s^{-1}$. Changes in flame thickness and radius were also compared with OPPDIF. There was good agreement in the temperature and axial velocity profiles between the axisymmetric simulations and the one-dimensional computations except for the regions where the flame temperature reach its peak and the axial velocity rapidly changes. The simulations of the axisymmetric flames with FDS showed that the flame thickness decreases and the flame radius increases with increasing global strain rate.
Structure of the counterflow nonpremixed flames were investigated by using Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS) and OPPDIF to evaluate FDS for simulations of the diffusion flame. FDS, employed a mixture fraction formulation, were applied to the diluted axisymmetric methane-air nonpremixed counterflow flames. Fuel concentration in the mixture of methane and nitrogen was considered as a numerical parameter in the range from 20% to 100% increasing by 10% by volume at the global strain rates of $a_g = 20S^{-l} and 80S^{-1}$ respectively. In all the computations, the gravity was set to zero since OPPDIF is not able to compute the buoyancy effects. It was shown by the axisymmetric simulation of the flames with FDS that increasing fuel concentration increases the flame thickness and decreases the flame radius. The centerline temperature and axial velocity, and the peek flame temperature showed good agreement between the both methods.
