  • In this paper, we proposed a system to raise gas safety management by using the wireless communication module and intelligent gas safety appliances. Our designed systems configure a micom-gas meter, an automatic extinguisher, sensors, and a wallpad. A micom-gas-meter monitors gas flow, gas pressure, and earthquake. An automatic fire extinguisher checks gas(combustible) leaks and temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$. Sensors measure smoke and CO gas. In our novel system, a micom-gas meter cut off inner valve with warnings, an automatic fire extinguisher cut off middle valve and spray extinguishing materials, and sensors generate signals for smoke and CO when occurring gas risk. Gas safety appliances and sensors takes safety measures, and transmit those signal to a wallpad. The wallpad again transmit signal like events to a control server. Users can connect web pages for gas safety through B-ISDN and control and manage them. We hereby devised scenarios for gas safety and risk management, and demonstrated their effectiveness through experiments.

  • It is possible to achieve high strength ranging from 40 MPa to 70 MPa in alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC), and AASC is also known to have a finer pore structure due to its high latent hydraulicity and fineness of slag cement, which makes it difficult for chloride ions to penetrate. Electrophoresis is mostly used to calculate the effective diffusion coefficient of chloride ions, and then to evaluate resistance to salt damage. Few studies have been conducted on the fixation capacity of chloride ions in AASC. For this reason, in this study the chloride fixation within the hardened paste was evaluated according to the type and the amount of alkaline activators. As a result, it was revealed that among the test specimens, the chloride fixation was greatest in the paste containing $Na_2SiO_3$. In addition, it was found that as more activator was added, a higher level of chloride fixation was observed. Through this analysis, it can be concluded that the type and the amount of alkaline activators have a high correlation with the amount of C-S-H produced.

  • Cypress woods treated individually with boric acid (BA4), ammonium pentaborate (APB4), or BA4/APB4 additives were examined for combustion gases. Each of the specimens was painted with a 4 wt% solution of boron compounds three times. Dried at room temperature, the combustion gas was analyzed using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). Consequently, the second maximum oxygen consumption rate of the specimen treated with boron compounds was 0.1067 to 0.1246 g/s, which was 5.3 to 18.9%, respectively lower than that of the blank specimen. The specific extinction area of specimens treated with BA4 and APB4 was also 2.0 to 19.0% lower, respectively. However, treated with BA4/APB4 showed 21.2% higher than that of the blank specimen. The maximum carbon monoxide concentration of the specimens with boron compounds was reduced by 0 to 25%. It was estimated to be 1.6 to 2.2 times higher than the permissible exposure limits by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), indicating a fatal toxicity. The boron compounds were effective in reducing carbon monoxide, but didn't meet the OSHA limit. The boron compound inhibited the burning behavior of the cypress wood, which suppressed the second maximum oxygen consumption rate by 5.3 to 18.9% and the maximum carbon monoxide generation by 0 to 25%.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the types of domestic safety accidents involving children and to verify the difference of safety knowledge according to variables of parents. Subjects include 226 parents who have 3-5 year old infants enrolled in kindergartens and day care centers in I-city, Jeollabuk-do. The study tools are modified and complemented questionnaire for the study purpose referred to the preceding research data and the literature. For the processing of collected data, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and the Duncan post-test were utilized using the SPSS program. The results of this study are as follows: First, safety accidents occurred at the majority of homes which have infant children. On average, the occurrence frequency was 1.78 times per six months. The accidents involving infants occurred in the order of drop or slip, crash or impact, stricture or jamming, fall, stab or cut, burn, swallow or inhalation. Second, both parents had an average level of safety knowledge. There was a distinction in the areas of 'fall' and 'first aid' according the mother's age. In addition, stay-at-home mothers had the higher level of safety knowledge compared with working mothers in the areas of 'general safety knowledge' and 'fire'. There was a distinction in the area of 'fire' according to the father's age. Given these findings, safety training programs for parents to improve safety knowledge needs to be developed.

  • This paper describes several performances and nondestructive inspection for deterioration due to forest fires in overhead transmission lines. After discussing corrosion mechanism such as atmospheric and galvanic corrosion for aged ACSR conductors and its detection for them are presented. Through impedance analysis of a solenoid coil, it is shown that the eddy current sensor may be available to inspect severe fault or local corrosion. As the solenoid coil changes its impedance when the test conductor is inserted into the coil, it can be possible to measure deterioration degree caused by forest fires. Tensile strength, extension rate and sensor impedance are tested for some samples degraded by artificial fire. As increasing blazed period to some extent, the strength of aluminum strand begins to be reduced remarkably, while galvanized steel strand holds the similar strength to the initial value, despite of appearing a little loss of zinc layer. In general, it is shown that the sensor impedance would be increased while the tension load of conductor is reduced and the extension rate is contrarily increased. Therefore, the sensor output could exhibit the changes of mechanical performances, and would be used to detect such deterioration caused by forest fire in ACSR conductors built on the ridge of mountains. Finally, it was verified that the solenoid coil could be applicable to obtain any crucial inform for serious deterioration due to forest fires.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the combustion and thermal properties in order to establish baseline data for the fire safety evaluation of domestic timbers. The combustion properties such as heat release rate, total heat release, gas yield, and mass loss were analyzed by the method of cone calorimeter test and thermogravimetry (TGA). Thermal decomposition temperatures of the specimens by TGA were recorded as $359.83^{\circ}C$ for White pine, $359.80^{\circ}C$ for Red-Leaved Hornbeam, $363.14^{\circ}C$ for Carolina poplar, $358.59^{\circ}C$ for Konara oak, and $362.11^{\circ}C$ Sargent cherry. Red-Leaved Hornbeam showed the highest value of heat release rate, but, Carolina poplar wood showed the lowest value. In case of the total heat release, Red-Leaved Hornbeam wood showed the highest value and Carolina poplar wood showed the lowest one. The gas analysis results showed that Sargent cherry wood had the lowest value of 0.021, and Konara oak had the highest at 0.031 in the $CO/CO_2$. The minimum value of mass reduction was recorded as 87.57% for Sargent cherry, but, on the other hand, it was 95.03% for Konara oak. There was a correlation between the gas generation of CO and $CO_2$, and combustion behavior of woods. These results are expected to be usful for providing a fundamental guideline with the fire safety of wood use in interior applications.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the damage patterns of cellular phone (SCH_W830) batteries according to energy sources and have them utilized as data for the settlement of disputes between manufactures and consumers. The reliability was secured by maintaining the ambient temperature and humidity at $22{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and 40~60 %, respectively. The voltage of the battery used for the tests was measured to be 4.18V between positive pole (+) and negative pole (-)(1), and 4.19 V between positive pole (+) and negative pole (-)(2). This study applied the Korean Industrial Standard (KS) to the flammability test of cellular phones due to a general flame applied to them and found that no damage occurred to the built-in battery even though the flame was applied to the cases of cellular phones for 30 seconds. From the results of immersing the cellular phones in the saline solution (NaCl, 0.9 %) for 180 seconds, it was found that there was a trace of carbonization and melting due to the heat caused by leaking current. It can be seen that when the cellular phones were heated for 70 seconds using a microwave oven (MWO), the areas containing the metal holder, recharging connector, antenna, etc., were melted and discolored and that other areas showed no particular problems. That is, while the external carbonization of cellular phones, built-in metals and dielectric materials, and damage and deformation of the battery terminal block, etc., occurred differently depending on the types of energy sources, the voltage showed comparatively constant characteristics. Therefore, it is thought to be possible to attribute the cause of damage to the battery by performing analysis taking into consideration comprehensively the characteristics of the flame spread pattern as well as the melting and deformation of metals.
