  • Currently, flammable liquids account for more than 87 wt% of the hazardous materials in circulation in Korea, and paint products are the most commonly used mixed hazardous materials. Therefore, one of the most urgent and important issues is that we have to secure the safety for manufacturing, storage and transport of paint products. In this study we investigated and analyzed the domestic hazardous materials safety management method, the international GHS test method and so forth. We tested risks for a variety of oil paints and found a relation between the results. Furthermore, the risk test method and criteria adapted for domestic situation was presented. Paints were classified as hazardous or non-hazardous according to the results of the flash point test, the amount of flammable liquid or the UN-combustion persistence test. It was revealed from the test results of 6 kind of oil-based paints using different resins that they were hazardous materials with very high risks and belonged to the Category 1 or the Category 2.

  • There are many economic and operational reasons to integrate fire alarm signaling system with other building automation system. Integration of this requires communication standard and careful design practices. The important point for this is also the development of intelligent control modules for replacing the conventional zone adapter in fire system. Therefore, this paper proposes an new conceptual design of the distributed fire alarm signaling system and a new intelligent control modules with LonTalk protocol. Newly proposed additions to LonWorks network make it very well suited for integrating fire systems with other building automation systems. Additionally, it is very important that best design practices, test procedures and building codes need to be modernized to accommodate Integrated building systems.

  • Recently, the expansion of underground shopping street has a tendency to make a large maze in urban underground space. As the passers -by in underground streets have little information about these spaces, there can be a great danger at fire. From this point of view, this study aims at offering the basic data which needs to make a reasonable planning of escape facilities of underground shopping street. Therefore, safe performance evaluation program is developed for evaluating inhabitants' safety at each model. This program is composed of systematic equations which generalize each phenomenon at fire.

  • This paper is currently being conducted to develop a nonlinear finite element analysis methods for predicting the structural behavior of reinforced concrete structures, exposed to fire. The changes in thermal parameters are discussed from the point of view of changes of structure and chemical composition due to the high temperature exposure. Although, this study considers codes standard fire for reinforced concrete frame, any other time-temperature relationship can be easily incorporated.

  • The study seeks to cooperate with the investigation of a fire investigation based on public-private partnership. Fire protection systems provide a wide variety of viewpoints from the perspectives of design, construction, management, maintenance, maintenance and maintenance systems at a particular point in time, construction, management, and maintenance systems. What is controversial is that there are illegal activities such as illegal activities of the Patent Office, misconduct of construction work and unreasonable construction of construction works. As a theoretical framework, the present study identified the four key elements of a successful disaster response system : responsiveness, control, professionalism, and bias.

  • Given the change in the energy market, large energy storage systems (ESS) is rapidly entering the market. In this rapid spread, fire accidents are becoming an issue. This study attempts to approach the fire from the system point of view to analyze the problems caused by bonding from different perspectives. Moreover, to conduct this study, the fabrication of real objects is dangerous, which needs to be verified through simulation. In this study, we approach the cause of fire that occurs in large-capacity ESS from the system perspective. We focus on determining the effects of cell balancing performed on the BMS after charging. Thus, we analyze the cell balancing behavior and the linkage risks to the various stacks. The study also explores why no fire occurs during 70% operation.

  • Fixed temperature heat detectors that respond to the heat generated in fire plume and alarm when the temperature reaches a specified point, give a great influences to the loss of life and property according to their reaction sensitivity. In this study, hot wind tunnel tests and compartment fire experiments were performed to investigate the response time and temperature of fixed temperature heat detector. As a result, simple equations were derived which can be predicted the response time and temperature of the fixed temperature heat detector for the ramp type fire. Also other useful data, such as the effective temperature, time constant, response time index(RTI) were obtained.

  • In order to investigate the fire-induced smoke movement in a three-dimensional room with an open door, numerical and experimental study was performed. The center, wall, and corner fire plumes for various sized fires were studied experimentally in a rectangular pool fire using methanol as a fuel. The numerical results from a self-developed SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) field model were compared with experimental results obtained in this and from literature. Comparisons of SMEP and experimental results have shown reasonable agreement. As the fire strength became larger for the center fires, the air mass flow rate in the door, average hot layer temperature, flame angle and mean flame height were observed to increase but the doorway-neutral-planeheight and the steady-state time were observed to decrease. Also as the wall effect became larger in room fires, the hot layer temperature, mean flame height, doorway-neutral-planeheight and steady-state time were observed to increase. In the egress point of view considering the smoke filling time and the early spread of plume in the room space, the results of the center fire appeared to be more dangerous as compared with the wall and the corner fire. Thus it is necessary to consider the wall effect as an important factor in designing efficient fire protection systems.

  • In this research, we studied reach the conclusion with more probability for predicting the severity which based on fire cases in domestic department stores for last 30 years. Considering the number of yearly fire cases in department stores and the cost of damage, we set the risk level. Moreover, this research shows the severity of fire in department stores through its scenario applying to FPETOOL program which NIST in USA has developed. By the result of FPETOOL program operation, we could acquired information about the time reaching the point where people are in danger in temperature, smoke layer and gas concentration. When a fire breaks out in a department store, a great loss of property and life is significant, as well as the potential risk is awfully considerable. Therefore, we should prevent a five from occuring.
