Effects of Fintech on Stock Return: Evidence from Retail Banks Listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange

  • This study examines the effect of fintech on retail banks stock return listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange for the period of 2016-2018 as today's new technology lead to the emergence of fintech companies playing the same role as retail banks in the financial industry. This study is conducted quantitatively using monthly data from January 2016 to October 2018 and uses fintech as independent variable, proxied by fintech funding frequency and fintech funding value. Data transformation is conducted due to data volatility. The data of fintech funding, both frequency and value, is transformed into standardized fintech funding and growth of fintech funding. The data is obtained from Crunchbase, while the data of stock returns is obtained from Investing. This study further analyzes the data using Fama French Three-Factor Model and panel data regression. We found that fintech has no significant effect on retail banks' stock returns listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange for the period of 2016-2018. The findings of the study provide some useful insights in understanding fintech companies' current position to retail banks in Indonesia. This study also suggests banking institutions, fintech companies, policy-makers, and others to take advantageous steps in building inclusive financial sectors.

An Analysis of Economic Effects of The Fintech Industry (핀테크 산업의 경제적 파급효과 분석)

  • In this study, we define Fintech services as review previous literatures and identify the traditional Fintech service market for analysing the economic effects of the Fintech Industry by using the 2014 Input-Output Table. We can identify the current market of Fintech industry which consists of VAN, PG, financial SW, mobile banking and Fintech R&D and we conduct Input-Output analysis by using non-competitive import model. The Input-Output analysis results show that production inducement effect and front/rear chain effect of the Fintech Industry are below average of other industries. This is because the Fintech technology and industry were emerging in Korea at that time (2014), and thus the ripple effects are not significant. Especially, due to the existing white risk financial regulation, new business opportunities have not been open to adapt new ICT-financial technologies. Therefore, when the business ecosystem is build through deregulation and platforms of the financial sector, it is expected that the Fintech Industry will have a high ripple effect. In this study, we identify the current market of Fintech industry from ICT indusries and conduct Input-Output analysis. The economic effects of the Fintech industry are not remarkable, but it is significant to identify the emerging market and present the basic analysis of issued research field.

Fintech and Banking: Evidence from Vietnam

  • The paper focuses on understanding fintech and the application of fintech in the banking sector in Vietnam. To solve this research objective, the authors analyze fintech development trends, especially the fintech application in the banking sector in Vietnam. To improve the quality of fintech services at banks, the authors conducted consideration of factors affecting customers' intention to use fintech services. To accomplish this, the authors collected data through a survey of 620 customers of the banks located in Ho Chi Minh City - the largest economic center in Vietnam. For the analytical method, the authors used multivariate regression to estimate the research model. Research results show that fintech service is very important for the banking sector in Vietnam. Moreover, this paper has achieved great success by identifying the factors that influence customers' intention to use fintech services. Accordingly, the intention to use fintech (INT) services is positively affected by the perception of usefulness (PU), social impact (SI), customer trust (TRU), and perceived ease of use (PEU). Based on the results of this study, bank managers will have a basis to improve the quality of fintech services. Not only that, the results of this study are also valuable for policymakers and researchers.

Promotion of Fintech Application for the Modernization of Banking-Finance System in Vietnam

  • In today's financial industry, Fintech (financial technology) has showed its role of an innovation-driving area, which can bring outstanding changes to the traditional financial market. This article will briefly introduce Fintech as well as its development in Vietnam. Besides, the research also provided a survey on experts' opinions on the challenges to the promotion of Fintech application for the modernization of the banking-finance system in Vietnam. The survey results of 40 experts in banking with knowledge of Fintech identify five challenges faced by Fintech companies in Vietnam: (1) legal corridor; (2) infrastructure; (3) Fintech companies; (4) customers; and (5) human resources. From these five challenges/barriers, there are 14 detailed aspects. The results of the expert survey using descriptive statistics show that all five factors are assessed to be low and need to be better addressed in the future. The authors suggest several solutions for further development of Fintech to support the modernization of the banking-finance system in Vietnam: (1) quickly complete the regulatory framework; (2) introduce policies on tax exemption; (3) promote research and application of the benefits of block-chain technology; (4) utilize the abilities of the human resources; and (5) actively promote and popularize knowledge about Fintech.

A Study on the Environment Characteristics and Continuous Usage Intention for Improvement of Fintech (핀테크 활성화를 위한 사용환경특성과 지속사용의도)

  • Purpose The development of the Fintech industry can be on the basis of the development in IT technologies such as Big data, IoT, cloud computing, it can be considered that the financial industry is repeating the evolution into Fintech. But the awareness of the consumers is still very low. Therefore the current dissertation, tries to deduce the suggestions for invigoration measures for Fintech by conducting an empirical study on the factors that influence the intention of reuse of Fintech on the consumer's point of view. Design/methodology/approach This study made a design of the research model by integrating the factors deducted from the Expectation Confirmation Theory. This paper empirically analyzes the impact of Continuous Usage Intention for Improvement of Fintech. The 302 survey responses were used to verify research hypotheses through covariate structural equation model. Findings According to the empirical analysis result, this study confirmed that the ultimate purpose of the Fintech service is to eliminate the social cost's waste element occurring from issue of money by not using or reducing the usage of cash. Since many Fintech users have pointed out security as the priority task, a direction for the related institutions has been proposed. Second, the content of the current dissertation will be the opportunity of broadening the perception of the current consumers that perceive Fintech as only a NFC simple payment service.

An Empirical Study on the Factors Influencing on the Customer Satisfaction in Case of Switching from Mobile Banking to Fintech Service (모바일 뱅킹에서 핀테크 서비스로의 전환 시 고객만족에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 실증연구)

  • Purpose This paper tired to identify the consumers' tendency with individual features and social influence as the independent variables because of the importance of identifying the various needs of financial consumers in accordance with the expansion of new financial demands. Furthermore, this paper included the relative attraction of Fintech and switching cost from mobile banking to Fintech as the variables. Design/methodology/approach To analyze the empirical study, data was collected online by conducting the questionnaire survey with 247 individuals who had used the Fintech service. The study results would provide us with the understandings of the factors influencing on the customer satisfaction and switching value recognized by consumers in case of switching from the existing mobile banking to the Fintech service. Findings The results would provide useful implications to the academic and the practical fields including the Fintech enterprises expanding the activation of Fintech industry.

Toward Fintech Adoption Framework for Developing Countries -A Literature Review based on the Stakeholder Perspective

  • Due to the low usage level of traditional financial services in many developing countries, Fintech services that often substitute for such traditional services with greater convenience have great potential in these markets. However, there have thus far been relatively few attempts to examine Fintech adoption in developing countries. As financial services are a highly sensitive industry in terms of government regulation and consumer trust, it is critical for policymakers to understand how to foster a healthy Fintech marketplace in developing country environments. In this paper, we review the scholarly literature on Fintech adoption with respect to three stakeholder groups: customers, service providers, and policymakers. Adding with practitioner-oriented documentation relating to Fintech adoption in Vietnam, we derive propositions for Fintech adoption research in Vietnam and similar developing countries. We collect these propositions as a framework that suggests avenues for future research.

  • We investigate the types and characteristics of Fintech has become a major issue. Through this, we believe that the essence of Fintech are platform business and market occupancy. To success Fintech business, the price of Fintech services needs to be lower than that of traditional financial services. The solution is to take advantage of big data and big data analysis. Finally, we think only a win-win cooperation with Fintech startups and financial companies in the direction we need to go.

A Study on the Research Trends in Fintech using Topic Modeling (토픽 모델링을 이용한 핀테크 기술 동향 분석)

  • Recently, based on Internet and mobile environments, the Fintech industry that fuses finance and IT together has been rapidly growing and Fintech services armed with simplicity and convenience have been leading the conversion of all financial services into online and mobile services. However, despite the rapid growth of the Fintech industry, few studies have classified Fintech technologies into detailed technologies, analyzed the technology development trends of major market countries, and supported technology planning. In this respect, using Fintech technological data in the form of unstructured data, the present study extracts and defines detailed Fintech technologies through the topic modeling technique. Thereafter, hot and cold topics of the derived detailed Fintech technologies are identified to determine the trend of Fintech technologies. In addition, the trends of technology development in the USA, South Korea, and China, which are major market countries for major Fintech industrial technologies, are analyzed. Finally, through the analyses of networks between detailed Fintech technologies, linkages between the technologies are examined. The trends of Fintech industrial technologies identified in the present study are expected to be effectively utilized for the establishment of policies in the area of the Fintech industry and Fintech related enterprises' establishment of technology strategies.

A Study of the Factors Influencing on the Intention to Use Fintech (핀테크 사용의도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose Fintech has been recently drawing extensive attention all over the world as the innovative trend that will change the future of the global financial industry. However, fintech has been mostly focusing on the payment service in the embryonic stage in Korea. This paper will investigate the approach to increase the intention to use for those who do not use fintech at present. Design/methodology/approach This paper empirically analyzes the impact of innovation of users and the perceived ease-of-use and security on the intention to use through the perceived usefulness and confidence. The 255 survey responses were used to verify research hypotheses through covariate structural equation model. Findings According to the analysis results, it was found that innovation had a significant impact on the perceived usefulness, but had no significant impact on confidence. The perceived usefulness had a significant impact on perceived usefulness and confidence. Moreover, the perceived usefulness and confidence had a significant impact on the intention to use. Meanwhile, it was identified that the security perceived by those who do not use fintech had a negative impact on perceived usefulness, confidence, and intention to use related to fintech. Accordingly, fintech service providers need to determine an approach to help customers to have a positive perception on the security of fintech.
