  • A proper estimation of the mechanical properties for composites has been required for better design/selection of constituents for composite materials. Present investigation shows the simulation results for ceramic reinforced metal matrix composite under uniaxial transverse tensile loading. The resulting transverse mean stress with the transverse mean strain was described for composites as a function of the volume fraction with two different types of interfacial bonding: (1)strongly bonded interface, and (2)no bonded interface. A two-dimensional finite element modeling and analysis were conducted based on the unit-cell concept with an assumption of a regular square arrangement of the reinforcement within the composite. The mean stress was generally increased with the ceramic volume fraction for composite with strong interface bonding. The micromechanics concept combined with finite element modeling for composite can be used in order to predict the transverse properties of composites with a priori known properties of constituents.

  • The growth-strain method was used for shape optimization, which carries out the optimization by distributing uniformly the distributed parameter such as von Mises stress and shear strain energy density. Shape optimization is carried out by iteration of stress analysis and growth strain analysis. In this study, the effect of growth ratio in the method was investigated and then the range of the adequate value of the growth ratio was determined. Also the growth-strain method was improved by applying the linear PID control theory in order to control volume required by a designer. Finally, an automatic shape optimization system was built up by the improved growth-strain method with a commercial software using finite element method. The effectiveness and practicability of the developed shape optimization system was verified by some examples.

  • A conservative finite-volume numerical method using unstructured meshes, which is developed by the authors, is evaluated for its application to several 2-D benchmark problems using a variety of quadrilateral, triangular and hybrid meshes. The present pressure-based numerical method for unstructured mesh clearly demonstrates the same accuracy and robustness as that fur typical structured mesh.

  • The heat and vibration effect is known to cause a serious deformation in linear motor system. The paper presents a heat and vibration characteristics that compare a advanced linear motor with developed linear motor through experiment and analyses. The heat in linear motor system is identified for experimental data and analytic data using the Finite Volume Method (FVM). Also, it shows that the optimum standard analyzed the acceleration patterns of the moving part cause the vibration source in linear motor. It presents the analyzed dynamics of linear motor in compliance with a deformation of the non-linear factor.

  • Most important for meaningful forging simulation is the determination of correct process parameters. In addition a check and a compensation of the data base after the comparison between experiments and the computation of the developed process is necessary. The existence of a systematic process parameter data bank for special kinds of forming process in combination with forging specific simulation lifts the value of the products. Finite volume method is applied to simulate the hot forging process to investigate the defects for the automobile product. Three typical forging processes have been investigated; Extrusion by hydrolic press, Upsetting by crank press and Inclined upsetting by hammer press. Simulated result has compared with the experiment and provided a direction to improve the process.

  • The numerical simulation of a two-phase flow In a discrete fracture network model is presented in this paper, The purpose of this work is to consider density-driven flows induced by the density difference between hot autochthonous heavy brines and injected cold water. Mechanical consequences of high pressure waves on the fracture permeability and heat exchanges between fluids and rock matrix are neglected in this study. The finite volume method is employed to discretize spatially and the system is solved by using an IMPES(Implicit Pressure-Explicit Saturation) scheme. In order to solve the strong non-linearity of the system, the Newton-Raphson algorithm is used. The well-known Buckeley-Leverett problem is adapted to validate results calculated from the model and a relatively good agreement is obtained.

  • Interaction between fluid flow and thermal radiation has received considerable attention due to its numerous applications in engineering field. In this case the thermofluid properties of radiating fluid vary with the variation of temperature field caused by absorption and emission of radiant heat. To analyze the radiation heat transfer in radiating fluid, the simultaneous solution of the radiative transfer equation (RTE) and the fluid dynamics equations is required. This means that the numerical procedure used for the RTE must be computationally efficient to permit its inclusion in the other submodels, and must be compatible with the other transport equations. The finite volume method (FVM) and the discrete ordinates method (DOM) are usually employed to simulate radiation problems in generalized coordinates. These two representative methods are examined and compared, especially in view of the numerical integration of the radiation intensity over solid angle. The FVM shows better accuracy than the DOM owing to less constraints of the selection of control angle.

  • A new anisotropic mesh refinement method is proposed. The new method is based on a simple second order interpolation error indicator. Therefore, it is methodologically direct and intuitive as compared with traditional anisotropic refinement strategies. Moreover, it does not depend on the mesh type. The error indicator is face-wisely calculated for all faces in a mesh and the cell refinement type is determined by the configuration of face markings with a given threshold. For the sake of simplicity, an application for a poisson equation on a triangle mesh is considered. The error field and resultant mesh refinement pattern are compared and effects of the threshold selection are discussed. Applying anisotropic refinement with various thresholds, we observed higher convergence rates than those in the uniform refinement cases.

  • An extension of our recently developed locally linear reconstruction scheme to 2 dimensional incompressible flow solver is presented. The solver is based on a semi-implicit fractional step method in which the convective term is discretized by Adams-Bashforth method and the diffusion term by Crank-Nicolson method. Several numerical examples are tested to demonstrate the mesh type independent accuracy of the solver, which include decaying vortex flow, square cavity flow, and flow around a circular cylinder. The above examples are solved on quadrilateral or hybrid meshes. For all numerical examples, we obtained reasonable results.

  • We have investigated on the development of 2-2 piezocomposites that have better piezoelectric activity and lower acoustic impedance than those of conventional piezoceramics. In this study, we have investigated the piezoelectric and acoustic properties of 2-2 piezocomposites sensor which were fabricated using dice-and-fill technique for the different volume fraction of PZT. The resonance characteristics measured by an impedance analyzer were similar to the analysis of finite element method. The resonance characteristics and the electromechanical coupling factor were the best when the volume fraction PZT was 0.6. It also showed the highest result from the standpoint of sensitivity, bandwidth and ring-down property and so on at the same condition. The specific characteristics shows that the 2-2 piezocomposites turned out to be superior to the ultrasonic sensor composed by single phase PZT.
