The results of a numerical investigation pertaining to the hysteretic behaviour of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) column to I-beam connections are discussed in detail. Following the verification of the numerical results against the available experimental tests, the nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis was implemented to evaluate the effects of different parameters including the column axial load, beam lateral support, shape and arrangement of stiffeners, stiffness of T-stiffeners, and the number of shear stiffeners. Pursuing this objective, an external CFT column to beam connection, tested previously, was selected as the case-study. The lateral forces on the structure were simulated, albeit approximately, using an incremental cyclic loading reversal applied at the beam tip. The results were compared in terms of hysteretic load-displacement curves, stress distributions in connection, strength, rotation, and energy dissipation capacity. It was shown that external T-stiffeners combined with internal shear stiffeners play an important role in the hysteretic performance of CFT columns to I-beam connections.
This study is conducted to clarify the effect of internal pressure on the deformation and collapse behaviors of wall thinned elbow under in-plane bending moment. Thus the nonlinear three-dmensional finite element analyses were performed to obtain the moment-rotation curve of elbow contatining various wall thinning defects located at intrados and extrados under in-plane bending (closing and opening modes) with internal pressure of $0{\sim}15MPa.$ From the results of analysis, the effect of internal of collapse moment of elbow on the global deformation behavior of wall thinned elbow was discussed, and the dependence of collapse moment of elbow on the magnitude of internal pressure was investigated under different loading mode, defect location, and defect shape.

An incremental Total Lagrangian Formulation is implemented for the finite element analysis of laminated composite pressure vessel with consideration of the material and geometric nonlinearities. For large displacements/large rotations due to geometric nonlinearities, the incremental equations are derived using a quadratic approximation for the increment of the reference vectors in terms of the nodal rotation increments. This approach leads to a complete tangent stiffness matrix. For material nonlinearity, the analysis is performed by using the piecewise linear method, taking account of the nonlinear shear stress-strain relation. The results of numerical tests include the large deflection behavior of the selected composite shell problem. When compared with the previous analysis, tile results are in good agreement with them. As a practical example, filament wound pressure vessel is analyzed with consideration of the geometrically and materially nonlinearity. The numerical results agree fairly well with the existing experimental results.
Ductility of open piled wharves under reversed cyclic loads has been investigated. Experimental testing of five wharf models having a scale of about 1:4 was conducted under the application of horizontal reversed cyclic loading. The experiments were designed to focus on the horizontal ultimate load, ductility and failure mode of the considered wharf models. Nonlinear numerical analyses using the finite element method were also performed on numerical models representing the experimentally tested wharves. The results of the experimental tests showed that open piled wharves possessed favourable ductile behaviour and that their load bearing capacity did not depreciate until a ductility factor of 3 to 4 was reached. The numerical analysis showed that the relative rotation that took place at the joints between the steel piles and the R.C. beam was responsible for a considerable portion of the total horizontal deformation of the wharves. Therefore, it was concluded that introducing the joint stiffness in calculating the deformations of open piled wharves was important to achieve reasonable accuracy.
Application of reduced web beam section (RWBS) as a sacrificial fuse element has become a popular research field in recent years. Weakening of beam web in these connections may cause local web buckling around the opening area which can affect cyclic behavior of connection including: maximum load carrying capacity, strength degradation rate, dissipated energy, rotation capacity, etc. In this research, effect of local web buckling on the cyclic behavior of RWBS connections is investigated using finite element modeling (FEM). For this purpose, a T-shaped moment connection which has been tested under cyclic loading by another author is used as the reference model. Fracture initiation in models is simulated using Cyclic Void Growth Model (CVGM) which is based on micro-void growth and coalescence. Included in the results are: effect of opening corner radii, opening dimensions, beam web thickness and opening reinforcement. Based on the results, local web buckling around the opening area plays a significant role on the cyclic behavior of connection and hence any parameter affecting the local web buckling will affect entire connection behavior.
The spatially coupled buckling, in-plane, and lateral bucking analyses of thin-walled Timoshenko curved beam with non-symmetric, double-, and mono-symmetric cross-sections resting on elastic foundation are performed based on series solutions. The stiffness matrices are derived rigorously using the homogeneous form of the simultaneous ordinary differential equations. The present beam formulation includes the mechanical characteristics such as the non-symmetric cross-section, the thickness-curvature effect, the shear effects due to bending and restrained warping, the second-order terms of semitangential rotation, the Wagner effect, and the foundation effects. The equilibrium equations and force-deformation relationships are derived from the energy principle and expressions for displacement parameters are derived based on power series expansions of displacement components. Finally the element stiffness matrix is determined using force-deformation relationships. In order to verify the accuracy and validity of this study, the numerical solutions by the proposed method are presented and compared with the finite element solutions using the classical isoparametric curved beam elements and other researchers' analytical solutions.
We examine theoretically the properties of the force on Mie particles induced by evanescent fields at a system of multilayer films (including a metal film), at which the surface plasmon resonance is excited by a p-polarized plane electromagnetic wave. An expression of the surface plasmon-coupled evanescent fields produced in Kretschmann (or Sarid) geometry is expanded in terms of vector spherical wave functions, while multiple reflections between the Mie particle and the metal boundary are taken into account. The Cartesian components of the force on Mie particles by the evanescent fields are analytically formulated and numerically evaluated. The force components are increased by one or two orders of magnitude at metal boundaries over those at dielectric boundaries. As a result, we can confirm the possibility of stable manipulation or rotation of a finite-sized object by forces of surface plasmon-coupled evanescent fields.

The purpose of this study is to offer an appropriate method of the degree of the flexural moment redistribution for continuous reinforced concrete beams. Twenty-four two-span continuous beams were selected to determine the manner and degree of moment redistribution. The concept of ductility is linked to the moment redistribution capacity and, consequently, the safety of the structure. Knowledge of the plastic rotation capacity of plastic regions of the structure is important for a plastic analysis or a linear analysis with moment redistribution. A nonlinear finite element analysis program named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology) was used to evaluate the ultimate strength and degree of moment redistribution. The nonlinear material model for the reinforced concrete is composed of models for characterizing the behavior of the concrete, in addition to a model for characterizing the reinforcing bars.

The objective of this paper is to decide optimal of the slot angle to minimize stress concentration in rotating disc of diamond saw. The fracture phenomena of the slot are discussed by the theoretical and experimental approaches and then some recommendation are presented to prevent the fracture. The focus of this investigation is to evaluation the effect of the slot on stress distribution using optimum design technique and finite element method(FEM) analysis. Stress concentration of the slot with respect to the various parameter of the slot such position, size, number, rotation speed. From the experimental results, when the slot angle of diamond saw is located $8^{\circ}\~12^{\circ}$ from rotating direction, the maximum equivalent stress reduces.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of local wall thinning on the collapse of elbow subjected to internal pressure and bending moment. Thus, the nonlinear three-dimensional finite element analyses were performed to obtain the collapse moment of elbow containing various wall thinning defects located at intrados and extrados under two loading modes (closing and opening modes) with internal pressure. From the results of analysis, the effect of wall thinning defect on the global moment-rotation behavior of elbow was discussed, and the dependence of collapse moment of elbow on wall thinning depth, length, and circumferential angle was investigated under different loading mode and defect location.
