Exter ballistics of a typical high-speed projectile is studied through a flow-visualization experiment and an unstructured grid Navier-Srokes computation. Experiment produced a schlieren photograph that adequately shows the characteristic features of this complex flow, namely two kinds of oblique cone shocks and turbulent wake developing into the downstream. A hybrid scheme of finite volume-element method is used to simulate the compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stok- es solution on unstructured grids. Osher's approximate Riemann solver is used to discretize the cinvection term. Higher-order spatial accuracy is obtained by MUSCL extension and van Albada ty- pe flux limiter is used to stabilize the numerical oscillation near the solution discontinuity. Accurate Gakerkin method is used to discretize the viscous term. Explict fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used for the time-stepping, which simplifies the application of MUSCL extension. A two-layer k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used to simulate the turbulent wakes accurately. Axisymmetric folw and two-dimensional flow with an angle of attack have been computed. Grid-dependency is also checked by carrying out the computation with doubled meshes. 2-D calculation shows that effect of angle of attack on the flow field is negligible. Axi-symmetric results of the computation agrees well with the flow visualization. Primary oblique shock is represented within 2-3 meshes in numerical results, and the varicose mode of the vortex shedding is clearly captured in the turbulent wake region.
In the recent years flow around bridges are investigated using computer modeling. Selvam (1998), Selvam and Bosch (1999), Frandsen and McRobie (1999) used finite element procedures. Larsen and Walther (1997) used discrete vorticity procedure. The aeroelastic instability is a major criterion to be checked for long span bridges. If the wind speed experienced by a bridge is greater than the critical wind speed for flutter, then the bridge fails due to aeroelastic instability. Larsen and Walther (1997) computed the critical velocity for flutter using discrete vortex method similar to wind tunnel procedures. In this work, the critical velocity for flutter will be calculated directly (free oscillation procedure) similar to the approaches reported by Selvam et al. (1998). It is expected that the computational time required to compute the critical velocity using this approach may be much shorter than the traditional approach. The computed critical flutter velocity of 69 m/s is in reasonable comparison with wind tunnel measurement. The no flutter and flutter conditions are illustrated using the bridge response in time.

Recently, a new singular function(NSF) method was posed to get accurate numerical solution on quasi-uniform grids for two-dimensional Poisson and interface problems with domain singularities by the first author and his coworkers. Using the singular function representation of the solution, dual singular functions, and an extraction formula for stress intensity factors, the method poses a weak problem whose solution is in $H^2({\Omega})$ or $H^2({\Omega}_i)$. In this paper, we show that the singular functions, which are not in $H^2({\Omega})$, also satisfy the integration by parts and note that this fact suggests the possibility of different choice of the weak formulations. We show that the original choice of weak formulation of NSF method is critical.
A cable-stiffened cylindrical single-layer latticed shell that is reinforced by cable-stiffened system has superior stability behaviour compared with the ordinary cylindrical latticed shell. The layouts of cable-stiffened system are flexible in this structural system, and different layouts contribute different stiffness to the structure. However, the existed few research primarily focused on the simplest type of cable layouts, in which the grids of the latticed shell are diagonally stiffened by prestressed cables in-plane. This current work examines the stability behaviour of the cable-stiffened cylindrical latticed shells with two different types of cable layouts using nonlinear finite element analysis. A parametric study on the effect of cross-sectional of the cables, pretension in cables, joint stiffness, initial imperfections, load distributions and boundary conditions is presented. The findings are useful for the reference of the designer in using this type of structural system.

A Multi-grid method is introduced to Finite Element Analysis of electromagnetic field problems in order to reduce the computational time. The puropse of this work is to study how to intermix discretization and solving process, thereby making the process more effective and to find the optimal factors of Multi-grid method. Several numerical experiments with linear models of uniform and nonuniform grids confirm that the proposed algorithm can reduce the computational time very effectively as compared with con ventional iterative methods. The best results are obtained with V cycle and S.O.R. with the acce leration factor of 1.3-1.4 for smoothing.
In the sheet metal forming operations, the strain measurement of sheet panel is an essential work which provides the formability information needed in die design, process design, and product inspection. To measure efficiently complex geometry strains, the 3-dimensional automative strain measurement system, which theoretically has a high accuracy but practically has about 3~5% strain error, is often used. For eliminating the strain error resulted in measuring the strains of formed panels using an automated strain measurement system, the position error calibration method is suggested, which computes accurate strains using the grids with accurate nodal coordinates. The accurate nodal coordinates are calculated by adding the nodal coordinates measured by the measurement system and the position error found using the multiple regression method as a function of the main error parameters obtained from the analysis of strain error in a standard cube. For the verification, the strain distributions of square and dome cups obtained from the position error calibration method are compared with those provided by the finite element analysis and ASAME.
In this paper, the discharge characteristics of AC PDP, one of the leading technologies currently under development for large-area flat displays, is computed by using Finite Element Method(FEM) combined with Flux-corrected Transport(FCT) algorithm. Up to now, many simulations of AC PDP have been mainly done by Finite Difference Method(FDM). But we simulated the AC PDP by using FEM-FCT method which discretizes the region of interest with unstructured grids. FEM-FCT method can reduce the computational cost because of refining locally where the physical quantities have steep gradients and is more efficient in solving discharge problems, such as a AC PDP. Results are presented in Ne-Xe(4%) gas mixture for a gas pressure of 400 Torr and as the discharge proceeds, the space and time variations of the electron and ion densities, potential and wall charges on the dielectric are described. Results from our simulation by FEM-FCT are similar to those from simulation by FDM and are more efficient in computational cost reduction.

This paper attempted to analyze the hydraulic effects that the dredging can take as an alternative to reduce possible damages of flooding due to the overflow of river levee in meandering rivers, where riverbed aggradation, seepage and erosion may occur. In order to make a hydraulic analysis in a section of meandering rivers, a two-dimensional hydraulic analysis model, RMA-2, was selected. The GIS was applied to construct two-dimensional finite element grids to consider the hydraulic conditions before and after dredging. The water surface elevations, depths, velocities, and tractive forces were compared before and after the dredging. The difference of water surface elevation between the inside and outside of river was turned out to be the maximum value of 0.58m under the design flood condition. It could be evaluated that the tractive force at the bank decreased about 42 to 67% on average for all the sections. These results could give valuable information that the dredging of the stream channel at the meandering sections decreased the risk of overflow, seepage and erosion of the banks. The methodologies given in this study will contribute to mitigating the flood damages in the surrounding farmlands.
This paper presents a fully coupled three-dimensional solver for the analysis of interaction between pulsatile flow and large deformation structure. A partitioned time marching algorithm is employed for the solution of the time dependent coupled discretised problem, enabling the use of highly developed, robust and well-tested solvers for each field. Conservative transfer of information at the fluid-structure interface is combined with an effective multi-predict-correct iterative scheme to enable implicit coupling of the interacting fields at each time increment. The three-dimensional unsteady incompressible fluid is solved using a powerful implicit time stepping technique and an ALE formulation for moving boundaries with second-order time accurate is used. A full spectrum of total variational diminishing (TVD) schemes in unstructured grids is allowed implementation for the advection terms and finite element shape functions are used to evaluate the solution and its variation within mesh elements. A finite element dynamic analysis of the highly deformable structure is carried out with a numerical strategy combining the implicit Newmark time integration algorithm with a Newton-Raphson second-order optimisation method. The proposed model is used to predict the wave flow fields of a particular flow-induced vibrational phenomenon, and comparison of the numerical results with available experimental data validates the methodology and assesses its accuracy. Another test case about three-dimensional biomedical model with pulsatile inflow is presented to benchmark the algorithm and to demonstrate the potential applications of this method.

The finite element method (FEM), discrete element method (DEM), and Discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) are among the standard numerical techniques applied in computational geo-mechanics. However, in some cases there no possibility for modelling by traditional finite analytical techniques or other mesh-based techniques. The solution presented in the current study as a completely Lagrangian and mesh-free technique is smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). This method was basically applied for simulation of fluid flow by dividing the fluid into several particles. However, several researchers attempted to simulate soil-water interaction, landslides, and failure of soil by SPH method. In fact, this method is able to deal with behavior and interaction of different states of materials (liquid and solid) and multiphase soil models and their large deformations. Soil indicates different behaviors when interacting with water, structure, instrumentations, or different layers. Thus, study into these interactions using the mesh based grids has been facilitated by mesh-less SPH technique in this work. It has been revealed that the fast development, computational sophistication, and emerge of mesh-less particle modeling techniques offer solutions for problems which are not modeled by the traditional mesh-based techniques. Also it has been found that the smoothed particle hydrodynamic provides advanced techniques for simulation of soil materials as compared to the current traditional numerical methods. Besides, findings indicate that the advantages of applying this method are its high power, simplicity of concept, relative simplicity in combination of modern physics, and particularly its potential in study of large deformations and failures.
