Structural analyses are preformed for the high pressure steam turbine casings of the nuclear and the fossil power plants. An axisymmetric boundary element program for analysis of the casings is developed and applied in the process of practical structural design. To show the useful-ness and accuracy of the developed program results of the analysis are compared with those of the finite element analysis under hydrostatic test pressure, To check the validity of the axisymmetric numerical analysis of the casings the stresses resulting from the hydrostatic test pressure are measured using the strain gate. The results of the numerical analyses are compared and discussed with those of the experiments.
Based on the displacement general solution of a pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, the shape function and stiffness matrix are deduced, and a new finite element model is proposed. Comparison analyses are made between the new proposed numerical model based on displacement general solution and the ANSYS solution by Beam188 element based on infinite approach. The results show that developed numerical model is available for the pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, and that also provide an accuracy finite element model for the numerical analysis. The effects of pre-twisted angle and flexural stiffness ratio on the mechanical property are also investigated.

The accurate analysis of ultrasonic wave propagation and scattering plays an important role in many aspects of nondestructive evaluation. A numerical analysis makes it possible to perform parametric studies, and in this way the probability of detection and reliability of test results can be improved. In this paper, a finite element method was employed for the analysis of ultrasonic wave propagation in anisotropic materials, and the accuracy of results was checked by comparing with analytical predictions. The element size and the integral time step, which are the critical components for the convergence of finite element solutions, were determined using a commercial finite element code. Some differences for wave propagation in anisotropic media were illustrated when plane waves are propagating in a unidirectionally reinforced composite materials. When plane waves are propagating in nonsymmetric directions in a symmetric plane, deviation angles between the wave vector and the energy vector were found from finite element analyses and the results agreed well with analytical calculations.

This paper describes an application of domain decomposition method for parallel finite element analysis which is required to large scale 3D structural analysis. A parallel finite element method system which adopts a domain decomposition method is developed. Node is generated if its distance from existing node points is similar to the node spacing function at the point. The node spacing function is well controlled by the fuzzy knowledge processing. The Delaunay triangulation method is introduced as a basic tool for element generation. Domain decomposition method using automatic mesh generation system holds great benefits for 3D analyses. Aa parallel numerical algorithm for the finite element analyses, domain decomposition method was combined with an iterative solver, i.e. the conjugate gradient(CG) method where a whole analysis domain is fictitiously divided into a number of subdomains without overlapping. Practical performance of the present system are demonstrated through several examples.

In this paper, we describe the development of a finite-element model for seismic qualification. This paper presents finite-element analysis model of the electronic enclosure to be used at Arkansas nuclear power plant, USA. The verified model predicts natural frequencies within 5% error for all major modes below 50 Hz. The finite element lumped mass approach and the finite element stiffness approach using the COSMOSM finite element code is applied for static, eigenvalue, and dynamic analyses of the mathematical model of this system. The FEM model indicates that the stress levels corresponding to the specified loading conditions are below the allowable stress levels that have been specified in the AISC Code. The findings conclude that the electronic enclosure will withstand the seismic levels stated in the reference documents.
This study performed a precise dynamic finite element time history elastic-plastic seismic analysis considering the welds, which have been not considered in design stage, on the nuclear components subjected to severe seismic loadings such as beyond-design basis earthquakes for sustainable nuclear power plants. First, the dynamic finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis was performed for a general design practice that does not take into account the welds of the pressurizer surge line system, one of safety class I components in nuclear power plants, and then the reference values for the accumulated equivalent plastic strain, equivalent plastic strain, and von Mises effective stress were set. Second, the dynamic finite element elastic-plastic seismic analyses were performed for the case of considering only the mechanical strength over-mismatch of the welds as well as for the case of considering both the strength over-mismatch and welding residual strain. Third, the effects of the strength over-mismatch and welding residual strain were analyzed by comparing the finite element analysis results with the reference values. As a result of the comparison, it was found that not considering the strength over-mismatch may lead to conservative assessment results, whereas not considering the welding residual strain may be non-conservative.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior of a reinforced earth wall by modeling the properties of the interface between soil and reinforced elements as well as the non-linear stress-strain characteristics of soil. The effect of lateral earth pressures induced during construction is also included in the analyses. The interface element used to evaluate the relative movement of the interface between soil/reinforcement and soil/wall- facing has a zero thickness and essentially consists of normal and shear springs. The behavior of soil element is calculated based on the hyperbolic model. The computer program SSCOMPPC which includes the interface element, hyperbolic model and bi-linear model is applied in this study. From the analyses, it is showed that the locus of maximum tension were closed to the hi-linear failure line of theoretical analyses. The lateral displacement of SSCOMPPC is larger than that of the FLAC which adopts the elastic model. This means the analysis which is adopted the hyperbolic model and interface element induced more larger displacement.

Engineers have performed slope stability analyses, including Limit Equilibrium Analysis, Finite Difference Analysis and Finite Element Analysis. Each analysis results in different Factor of Safety(FS) for slopes. The comparison of FS results from these stability analyses has been carried out for various conditions, such as geometry of slopes, dry and fully saturated soils, nail and anchor reinforcements. Standard deviations of FS calculated from various slope analyses are 0.03 to 0.04 and 0.22 to 0.48 for the slopes without and with nail or anchor reinforcement, respectively. Construction of tiered concrete retaining wall in addition to nail or anchor reinforcement increases FS of 12% to 29% for fully saturated soils.

Difficulties in the finite element modeling of human spine are evaded by using a stiffness matrix element whose properties can be characterized from experimentally measured stiffness of functional spinal units. Relative easiness is in that inter-vertebral discs, ligaments, and soft tissues connecting vertebrae do not need to be modeled as they are. The remarkable coupling effect between distinct degrees of freedom induced by the geometric complexity can be accommodated without much effort. An idealized block model with simple geometry for vertebra is employed to assess the feasibility of this method. Analyses are performed in both levels of motion segment and spinal column, and the result is compared with that from detail model. As far as the global behavior of spine is concerned, the simplification is found not to aggravate inaccuracy only if sufficient experimental data is provided and interpreted properly.
This paper describes earthquake response of the Arhavi Highway Tunnel its geometrical properties, 3D finite element model and the linear time history analyses under a huge ground motion considering soil-structure interaction. The Arhavi Highway Tunnel is one of the tallest tunnels constructed in the Black Sea region of Turkey as part of the Coast Road Project. The tunnel has two tubes and each of them is about 1000 m tall. In the study, lineartime history analyses of the tunnel are performed applying north-south, east-west and up accelerations components of 1992 Erzincan, Turkey ground motion. In the time history analyses, Rayleigh damping coefficients are calculated using main natural frequency obtained from modal analysis. Element matrices are computed using the Gauss numerical integration technique. The Newmark method is used in the solution of the equation of motion. Because of needed too much memory for the analyses, the first 10 second of the ground motions, which is the most effective duration, is taken into account in calculations. The results obtained 3D finite element model are presented. In addition, the displacement and stress results are observed to be allowable level of the concrete material during the earthquakes.
