  • In modem days when architectural materials have grave impacts on overall design expression, materials for architecture, especially finishing materials have become the most essential elements for the design expression, as architectural space and form have been. When it comes to the architectural materials, they can be conceived by visual and tactile sensory system and perceptional system which based on memory and experience. This study confirms how materials bring into effect on architecture in the sense of its design. The main subject of this analysis is expression method of architectural finishing materials. Also, this study finds out the relationship between finishing materials and the images of materials by analyzing the effect factor of architectural material expression with the perspectives of materials, formal and environments and by examining roles of the architectural materials in design. The material factor, in the expression of materiality, is how to make tectonic space and to vary the surface of building as finishing material design. The formal factor is related to set up the new direction in the architectural form and to create the dynamic and informal space. And the social and cultural environment as the effect factor gives new situation and context to architectural material expression. This principle enables us to use architectural materials as one of the important elements which express the whole characteristics of the area.

  • The grinding and furbishing process as the finishing process for molds include the works such as the grinding, buffing, lapping and polishing among others. A finishing tool unit is applied to this finishing process for the burr, lapping, polishing and others of molds. A finishing tool unit can carry out the flexible machining, depending on the machining allowance for objects to be cut on the basis of the instrumental driving mechanism which enables the up, down, left and right floating, which is applied in link with the dedicated cutters and robot machining systems. This study selected the shape to increase the rotatory force of an impeller when air is discharged during the driving of a finishing tool unit, and reflected it to the impeller designing. In addition, the study analyzed each flow velocity and pressure distribution per air pressurization value and finally analyzed the rotating torque to suggest the optimal conditions in designing impellers.

  • This study aimed to understand the importance of applying finishing materials into interior space, and to add meaning to the creation of functional space, associated interior finishing materials with brain science. To achieve this purpose, brainwave(EEG) experiment was conducted. The brainwave appearing when sensing the surface of interior finishing materials with hands was measured. The locations of the electrode were FP1, FP2, F3, F4, C3, C4, P3, P4, O1, O2, F7, F8, T3, T4, T5, T6, CZ, FZ, and PZ and in addition to these, AFZ was added. Eight(8) kinds of finishing materials: metallic material, film paper, lumbar, stone, glass, silk wallpaper, fabric, and paint were used to measure '${\alpha}$-wave against ${\beta}$ wave.' As a result, it was found that the most activated finishing material in term of relaxation was film paper, followed by metallic, glass, paint, fabric, stone, lumbar, and silk wallpaper. To explain in light of this, (1) '${\alpha}$-wave against ${\beta}$ wave' was the most activated at ch1-FP1 and ch2-FP2, and at ch17-AFZ and ch19-FZ, which indicated that metopic-prefrontal lobe showed the highest activation in relaxation. Film paper, among the finishing materials, showed the highest increase in relaxation. (2) In general, '${\alpha}$-wave against ${\beta}$ wave' relaxation was inhibited at ch13-T3 and ch14-T4, and at ch15-T5 and ch16-T6 and the arousal in the temporal lobe was prominent. Silk wallpaper, among the finishing materials, showed the highest arounsal effect. As a result of measuring the superficial touch on the silk wallpaper, which was regarded as the most rough material among the eight finishing materials, the arousal effect of ${\alpha}$-wave against ${\beta}$-wave, among the brainwave characteristics, was found to be the highest. (3) to judge from the scope of this experiment regarding the tactile sensation over the finishing materials, it is considered that the brainwave reaction sometimes appeared contrastive depending on whether the surface was smooth or rough and there also appeared a difference in relaxation and arousal reaction of the brainwave depending on whether the surface was hot or cold, but the sensation on the surface texture was often evaluated differently depending on who you were. For this reason, this study has some limitations.

  • As a response to the recent increase in the Interest in environment friendly interior finishing materials, the purpose of this study is to compare the awareness of environment friendly interior finishing materials between interior designers and housewives, as representatives of two different consumer groups, and to examine how the preferences between them differ. The study participant group for this research consisted of 80 interior designers working in Gwangju, and 166 housewives who were residents of a number of apartments in Gwangju. Self administered questionnaires were provided to the participants and were then collected. Unpaired t-tests and $x^2$ tests were used to compare the prevalence of epidemiological factors and the variables that revealthe awareness and the preference between the two groups. While it was expected that both groups would source information using the internet, the housewives group showed a tendency to also seek advice from others in the selection of environment friendly interior finishing materials. Interior-designers considered the high price and the lack of diverse products as the most serious problems involved in selecting environment friendly interior finishing materials. Interior-designers chose design, color and long-term use, and the method of maintenance as standards by which to choose interior materials in general, while the housewives considered 'environment friendly' as the most important standard. Both groups however favored environment friendly materials. There was no difference between the two groups in terms of their belief in the need to trust a well known brand name and in the importance of a Green-label placed on interior finishing materials such as wallpaper, paint and laminate flooring.

  • Selection of finishing materials in the design stage is an important management factor in terms of use safety and satisfaction, and work cost and process. However, selection of materials in the design stage is usually conducted without related guidelines or a set process, but depends on the experience of the architect or advice of materials company employees. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a finishing materials selection process that can be used by a architect. Materials selection related rules collected through interview with experts and five office building cases were used as knowledge. In addition, another aim of the study was to propose a prototype system interface for use in the field.

  • In the case of apartment building, it is difficult to conduct non-destructive testing due to the actual presence of people and the dust and noise generated during the core test, so inspections are performed each time in the common area and underground parking lot, and the tests are conducted on the finishing material rather than on the concrete surface due to low-cost orders. As the process progresses, poor inspection is inevitable. In addition, the proposed formulas for strength estimation have large fluctuations depending on the differences in test conditions and environments, and even if they show the same measured value, the deviation between each proposed formula is large, making it difficult to accurately estimate strength, making it difficult to use. Accordingly, we would like to select finishing materials mainly used in apartment complexes and compare and evaluate the compressive strength of concrete according to the type of finishing material by using non-destructive testing methods directly on the finishing materials without removing the finishing materials. The reliability evaluation results of the estimated compressive strength of concrete using the ultrasonic velocity method according to the type of finishing material are as follows. The error rate between the estimated compressive strength and compressive strength derived through the ultrasonic velocity method shows a wide range of variation, ranging from 21.83% to 58.89%. The effect of the presence or absence of finishing materials on the estimated compressive strength was found to be insignificant. Accordingly, it is necessary to select more types of finishing materials and study ultrasonic velocity methods according to the presence or absence of finishing materials, and to study estimation techniques that can increase reliability.

  • This study is a fundamental research which suggests some standards that can be used in selecting some advanced materials to be applied in housing space designs. The following conclusions have been drawn from the study. First, it has been discovered that as the residents' quality of life improved, the finishing materials emerged as an important element of housing spaces. It could also be seen that among the finishing materials used in housing spaces, there is recently a growing trend towards various environmentally-friendly advanced materials under the theme of 'the nature' and 'health'. As a result, the need to investigate the standards of discriminatory and efficient housing space designs using advanced materials is on the increase. Second, through the literature and precedent studies, the physical criteria of advanced materials have been classified into five categories: new technology, new manufacturing methods, new materials, complementation and applicability. The main criteria of advanced finishing materials for housing spaces have been classified into four main categories: durability, functionality, economical efficiency and sensibility. By collecting and classifying some key words according to each of these four categories, the representative or combinable features have been extracted. By organizing the advanced materials' physical criteria and their details, some standards based on the physical aspects have been suggested. The features of the finishing materials in consideration of advanced materials have been reclassified into the user-based criteria, environmental criteria and spatial criteria. Through this method, the criteria have been brought up from a new viewpoint, establishing the standards for the advanced materials applicable to housing spaces. Finally, after assessing the criteria by analyzing the advanced materials currently known to be applicable in housing spaces, it has been concluded that the criteria can be used as the fundamental standards. As this study is based on investigating the literature and data, it may be less than reasonable to generalize from the limited number of examples. Hence, it shall be important to make a profound study of some detailed criteria by suggesting more objective standards and analyzing a greater variety of advanced materials.
