  • This paper describes an adaptive hybrid fingerprint matching method using minutiae, filterbank, and the quality of fingerprint. We estimate the quality of each block in the fingerprint image and extract the probability expectation about the quality of each block. By using this expectation, we could achieve the robust matching rate despite of noise distortion. The matching rate of the proposed method is higher than that of other methods. However, the matching speed is similar with that of others as shown in the results.

  • This paper proposes an advanced circuit for the capacitive type fingerprint sensor signal processing and an effective isolation structure for minimizing an electrostatic discharge(ESD) influence and for removing a signal coupling noise of each sensor pixel. The proposed detection circuit increases the voltage difference between a ridge and valley about $80\%$ more than old circuit. The test chip is composed of $160\;\times\;192$ array sensing cells $(9,913\times11,666\;um^2).$ The sensor plate area is $58\;\times\;58\;um^2$ and the pitch is 60um. The image resolution is 423 dpi. The chip was fabricated on a 0.35um standard CMOS process. It successfully captured a high-quality fingerprint image and performed the registration and identification processing. The sensing and authentication time is 1 sec(.) with the average power consumption of 10 mW at 3.0V. The reveal ESD tolerance is obtained at the value of 4.5 kV.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for a real-time automatic fingerprint identification system is proposed. The fingerprint feature volume is extracted by considering distinct and local characteristics(such as intensity and image quality difference etc.) in fingerprint images, which makes the algorithm properly adaptive to various image acquisitionj methods. Also the matching technique is designed to be invariant on rotation, scaling and translation (RST) changes while being capable of real-time processing. And the classification of fingerprints is performed based on the ridge flow and the relations among singular points such as cores and deltas. The developed fingerprint identification algorithm has been applied to various sets of fingerprint images such as one from NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA), a pressed fingerprint database constructed according to Korean population distributions in sex, ages and jobs, and a set of rolled-than-scanned fingerprint images. The overall performance of the algorithm has been analyzed and evaluated to the false rejection ratio of 0.07% while holding the false acceptance ratio of 0%.

  • In this paper, we propose a fingerprint verification algorithm for the embedded system based on the minutia extracted using the image quality, the minutia structure, and the Sequency and the orientation of ridges. After the pre- and the post-processing, the true minutia are selected, thus it shows high reliability in the fingerprint verification. In matching process, we consider the errors caused by shift, rotation, and pressure when acquiring the fingerprint image and reduce the matching time by applying a local matching instead of a full matching to select the reference pair. The proposed algorithm has been designed and verified in Arm920T environment and various techniques for the realtime process have been applied. Time taken from the fingerprint registration through out the matching is 0.541 second that is relevant for the realtime applications. The FRR (False Reject Rate) and FAR (False Accept Rate) show 0.079 and 0.00005 respectively.

  • Fingerprint recognition is a task to find a matching pattern in a database for a specific persons fingerprint. To accomplish this task, preprocessing, classification, and matching steps are taken for a large-scale fingerprint database but only the matching step is taken without classification for a small-scale database. The primary matching method is based on minutiae (ridge ending point, bifurcation). This matching method, however, requires a very complex computation to extract minutiae and match minutiae-to-minutiae accurately due to translation, rotation, nonlinear deformation of fingerprint and occurrence of spurious minutiae. In addition, this method requires a laborious preprocessing step in order to improve the quality of fingerprint Images. This paper proposes a new simple method to eliminate these problems. With this method, Gabor variance is used instead of minutiae for fingerprint recognition. The Gabor variance is computed from Gabor features that result from filtering a fingerprint image through Gabor filter. In this paper, this method is described and its test result is shown, demonstrating the potential of using this new method for fingerprint recognition.

  • This paper proposes a methodology to evaluate the quality and level of difficulty of fingerprint image databases, which leads to objective evaluation for the performance of fingerprint recognition system. Influencing factors to fingerprint matching are defined and the matching performance between two fingerprint images is evaluated using segmentation and orientation filed. In this study, a hierarchical processing method is proposed to measure an orientation field, which is able to improve the matching speed and accuracy. The results of experiments demonstrate that the defined influencing factors can describe the characteristics of fingerprint databases. Level of difficulty for fingerprint databases enables the performance of fingerprint recognition algorithms to be evaluated and compared even with different databases.

  • In crime scene investigation, fingerprint identification is regarded to be one of the most important techniques for personal identification. However, objective and unbiased evaluation methods that would compare the fingerprints with diverse available and developing methods are currently lacking. To develop an objective and quantitative method to improve fingerprint evaluation, a preliminary study was performed to extract useful research information from the analysis with densitometric image analysis (CP Atlas 2.0) and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) for the developed fingerprints on porous surfaces. First, inked fingerprints obtained by varying pressure (kg.f) and pressing time (sec.) to find optimal conditions for obtaining fingerprint samples were analyzed, because they could provide fingerprints of a relatively uniform quality. The extracted number of minutiae from the analysis with AFIS was compared with the calculated areas of friction ridge peaks from the image analysis. Inked fingerprints with a pressing pressure of 1.0 kg.f for 5 seconds provided the most visually clear fingerprints, the highest number of minutiae points, and the largest average area of the peaks of the friction ridge. In addition, the images of the developed latent fingerprints on thermal paper with the iodine fuming method were analyzed. Fingerprinting condition of 1.0 kg.f/5 sec was also found to be optimal when generating highest minutiae number and the largest average area of peaks of ridges. Additionally, when the concentration of ninhydrin solution (0.5 % vs. 5 %) was used to compare the developed latent fingerprints on print paper, the best fingerprinting condition was 2.0 kg.f/5 sec and 5 % of ninhydrin concentration. It was confirmed that the larger the average area of the peaks generated by the image analysis, the higher the number of minutiae points was found. With additional tests for fingerprint evaluation using the densitometric image analysis, this method can prove to be a new quantitative and objective assessment method for fingerprint development.

  • The postprocessing to remove false minutia is important because the extraction of true minutia affects the performance as a key factor in fingerprint identification system. In this paper, we propose an efficient postprocessing algorithm for removing false minutia among the extracted candidates in a thinned image. The proposed algorithm removes false minutia in three steps by using various information in the acquired fingerprint image: the structural information of minutia (end point and bifurcation), the inherent characteristics of fingerprint, and the quality of acquired images. Under Intel Celeron processor environment with 248${\times}$292 images acquired by optic device, the experiments showed that the proposed algorithm efficiently removed false minutia while preserving true minutia. Moreover, the proposed algorithm takes 0.0154 second, which is very small compared to the time for preprocessing (0.343 second).

  • Porosity paper evidence is encountered in case of forgery, kidnapping, fraud and terrorist activity. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of three chemical reagents (Ninhydrin, 1,8-diazafluoren-9-one (DFO), Iodine fuming) to the quality of developed latent fingerprints on porosity printing papers and newspaper. In case of printing papers, print quality was better with Iodine fuming method than Ninhydrin and DFO treatment to developing latent fingerprints. Developing latent fingerprint on newspapers was achieved with Iodine fuming processing. The processing of Iodine fuming followed by DFO and by using blue light (orange red filter) exhibited better results with Iodine fuming. Enhancement of latent fingerprint detection image using Digital Imaging System was achieved.
