미세분 함량에 따른 골판지원지의 압착탈수 특성 (Wet Pressing Properties of OCC Stock depending on the Fines Contents)

  • The effects of fines contents in OCC stock on the wet pressing process were evaluated in this study. The fines were collected from the beaten OCC stock by using 200 mesh. The dryness of handsheet samples after the couch and after the 1st wet press were greatly affected by the fine contents of the OCC stock. The higher contents of fines resulted in the lower value in dryness but the higher value of density followed by the higher strength properties. The addition of the retention aids and the drainage aids on the OCC stocks showed the wet pressing efficiency were greatly affected by the fine contents rather than the addition of polymer additives. The increase in the fine retention by the polymer additives offset the improvement in the wet pressing efficiency originated from the polymer additives.

  • A new technique for fractionating pulp stock into a long fiber portion and fines fraction was developed by KRICT in order to enhance the drainage and strength properties of recycled OCC pulp. In order to investigate the effect of fines contents in stock and stages of flotation on fractionation efficiency, flotations were performed at varied fines contents and flotation stages. Based on the result of multi-stage flotation fractionation it could be said that fines smaller than 15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ stabilize flotation froth of OCC. Although the amounts and the fines contents of flotation reject could be increased by multi-stage flotation fractionation of OCC, flotation stages more than 3 times were found to be inefficient in terms of fines concentrating degree. In order to satisfy the both conditions of reducing long fiber loss and of increasing flotation reject, several kinds of fractionating promoters were searched and investigated. And high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamide was chosen as a long fiber flocculating and flotation froth-stabilizing agent.

세립분의 함유량이 Sand Column의 투수성에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Fines on the Permeability in Sand Column)

  • 세립분의 함유량, 구속압력과 건조밀도에 따른 Sand Column의 투수성에 대한 시험을 실시하였다. 삼축투수시험은 세립분의 함유량 (5, 15, 25, $35{\%}$), 구속압력($\sigma_3^'=0.5,\;1.0,\;2.0,\;3.0{\cal}kg/{\cal}cm^2$)과 건조밀도($\gamma_d=1.50,\;1.55,\;1.60,\;1.65 {\cal}g/{\cal}cm^3$)를 달리한 여러 종류의 시료에 대하여 수행되었다. 삼축투수시험 결과 세립분 함유량, 구속압력 및 건조밀도가 커질수록 투수계수는 작아지는 것을 알 수 있었다. 특히, 세립분의 함유량에서는 $0.01{\cal}mm$ 입경 이하의 세립분이 증가할수록 투수성이 매우 크게 감소하고, 구속압력과 건조밀도에서는 낮은 구속압력수준 ($\sigma_3^'=0.5{\~}1.0{\cal}kg/{\cal}cm^2$)과 낮은 수준의 밀도($\gamma_d=1.50{\~}1.55{\cal}g/{\cal}cm^3$) 변화에서 투수성의 감소가 매우 크게 일어남을 알 수 있었다.

Effect of fines on the compression behaviour of poorly graded silica sand

  • A series of high-pressure isotropic compression tests were performed on four types of poorly graded silica sand that were artificially prepared based on representative grading curves and similar mineralogy composition of seabed sediment containing different fines contents existing in the Nankai Trough. The addition of fines steepens the initial compression path and increases the decrement of the void ratio after loading. The transitional behaviour of the poorly graded sand with a larger amount of fines content was identified. The slope of the normal compression line shows a slight decreasing tendency with the level of fines content. The bulk modulus of silica sand with fines was lower when compared with the published results of silica sand without fines. A small amount of particle crushing of the four types of poorly graded sand with variable fines content levels was noticed, and the results indicated that the degree of particle crushing tended to decrease as the fines content increased.

Effects of fines content on void ratio, compressibility, and static liquefaction of silty sand

  • Many aspects of the behavior of sands are affected by the content of non-plastic fine particles and these various aspects should be included in a constitutive model for the soil behavior. The fines content affects maximum and minimum void ratios, compressibility, shear strength, and static liquefaction under undrained conditions. Twenty-eight undrained triaxial compression tests were performed on mixtures of sand and fine particles with fines contents of 0, 10, 20, 30, 50, 75, and 100% to study the effects of fines on void ratio, compressibility, and the occurrence of static liquefaction. The experiments were performed at low consolidation pressures at which liquefaction may occur in near-surface, natural deposits. The presence of fines creates a particle structure in the soil that is highly compressible, enhancing the potential for liquefaction, and the fines also alter the basic stress-strain and volume change behavior, which should be modeled to predict the occurrence of static liquefaction in the field. The void ratio at which liquefaction occurs for each sand/fines mixture was determined, and the variation of compressibility with void ratio was determined for each mixture. This allowed a relation to be determined between fines content, void ratio, compressibility, and the occurrence of static liquefaction. Such relations may vary from sand to sand, but the present results are believed to indicate the trend in such relations.

Assessment of the effect of fines content on frost susceptibility via simple frost heave testing and SP determination

  • The Segregation Potential (SP) is one of the most widely used predictors of frost heave in cold regions. Laboratory step-freezing tests determining a representative SP at the onset of the formation of the last ice lens (near the thermal steady state condition) can predict susceptibility to frost heave. Previous work has proposed empirical semi-log fitting for determination of the representative SP and applied it to several fine-grained soils, but considering only frost-susceptible soils. The presence of fines in coarse-grained soil affects frost susceptibility. Therefore, it is required to evaluate the applicability of the empirical semi-log fitting for both frost-susceptible and non-frost-susceptible soils with fines content. This paper reports laboratory frost heave tests for fines contents of 5%-70%. The frost susceptibility of soil mixtures composed of sand and silt was classified by the representative SP, and the suitability of the empirical semi-log fitting method was assessed. Combining semi-log fitting with simple laboratory frost heave testing using a temperature-controllable cell is shown to be suitable for both frost-susceptible and non-frost-susceptible soils. In addition, initially non-frost-susceptible soil became frost susceptible at a 10%-20% weight fraction of fines. This threshold fines content matched well with transitions in the engineering characteristics of both the unfrozen and frozen soil mixtures.

Influence of gradation on shear strength and volume change behavior of silty sands

  • The results of an experimental program regarding the effects of gradation on shear strength and volume change behavior of silty sands are presented. Consolidated drained direct shear tests were performed on two clean base sands and twelve silty sands obtained by mixing those base sands with two different non-plastic silts at various fines contents (${\leq}$ 25%). Drained shear strengths were observed to be not significantly influenced by either base sand gradation or silt gradation or fines content for the studied range. Increasing fines content has increased the volumetric contraction of specimens at similar void ratio. However, the amount of increase in volumetric contraction of silty sands were found to be affected by silt gradation when other influencing factors such as fines content, base sand gradation and mineralogy were kept the same. Moreover, the amount of increase in volumetric contraction of silty sands were also found to be affected by base sand gradation when other influencing factors such as fines content, silt gradation and mineralogy were kept the same.

  • 토질분류법에서 흙은 크게 사질토와 점성토로 분류되며, 실제 설계에서도 이와 같이 분류된 흙 종류에 따라 다른 예측식을 사용하여 흙의 거동을 평가하고 있다. 그러나, 모래-세립분 혼합토는 전형적으로 중간토(intermediate soil or transitional soil)로 구분되어 모래와 점토의 중간적인 성질을 나타내기 때문에, 이러한 혼합토에 대한 거동특성을 평가할 수 있는 기준이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 입도분포를 조정한 특정 모래에 세 가지 종류의 세립분으로 구성된 다양한 세립분함유율을 갖는 시료를 대상으로 일련의 반복 삼축압축시험을 수행하였다. 모래가 골격을 이루는 간극비(골격간극비)를 고려하여, Silica sand와 세립분(Iwakuni natural clay, Tottori silt, kaolinite)을 다양한 건조 중량비로 혼합하여 그 특성을 파악하였으며, 실험결과로 전환 세립분함유율(threshold fines content)을 넘지 않는 혼합토의 반복전단강도를 세립분 함유율 증가에 따라 평가하였다. 그 결과, 반복 전단응력비는 세립분 함유율 증가에 따라 조밀한 시료에서는 감소, 느슨한 시료에서는 증가하는 결과를 나타냈으며, 혼합토의 반복전단응력비를 등가골격간극비의 개념을 이용하여 평가했다.

  • In pulp and papermaking process, enzymatic treatment of pulp fibres has been a topic of increasing interest in last decade. Lots of patents, papers and research reports were published on the application of enzymes in the fields of enzymatic bleaching, deinking, slime control, pitch control, waste water treatment and fibre modification. Cellulase and hemicellulase are the principal enzymes used for the modification of fibre property. This study was carried out for determinating the behaviors of enzyme to pulp fibres. A commercial enzyme, Denimax BT which is consisted with cellulase and hemicellulase, was treated to the kraft pulp produced from domestic hardwood mixtures. Results were mainly concentrated on the behaviors of freeness, drainability and fines content of fibres, and physical properties of paper with enzyme treatment. The freeness levels and dewatering ability were developed, and the fines contents were decreased. The creation of fines were controlled by the method of pre-enzyme treatment prior to fibre beating. The mechanical strength of paper, like tensile, burst, tear strength and folding endurance, were remarkably improved by the pre-enzyme treatment.

세립분 함유량 및 투기고에 따른 준설토의 자중압밀 특성 (Characteristics of Sedimentation and Self-weight Consolidation of Dredged clay Focusing on Fines Content and Falling Height)

  • In this paper, analyzes the characteristics of self-weight consolidation on the dredged clay according to the fines content and falling height. Research was performed with the dredged clay sampled by Sae-mangeum field site. Classification of fines content was performed by sieve analysis test. After adjusting the fine content, self-weight consolidation tests were carried out focussing on the variation of fines content and falling heights. From the test results of the self-weight consolidation test, samples with high fines content had reached sedimentation completion more later than ones with less fine content samples. In other words, the start of self-weight consolidation was slowing down with increasing of fines content. Also, from the test results of calculating the coefficient of sedimentation consolidation, the coefficient value were increased with the fines content increases. In addition, the change of sedimentation ratio and volume ratio showed more higher changed value as the fine content increases. Thus, it is important to consider the fines content when estimate the settlement time of dredged soil in field dredge work.
