  • Rheological characteristics of Sm-Co type plastic magnet compound for powder injection molding process were investigated with the variation of the magnetic powder size, their relative contents and volume fraction using the mixture of fine and coarse powder. Shear viscosity of Sm-Co type compound was decreased with increasing the size of coarse powder due to the increase of powder packing density. However, the smaller the average size of fine powder resulted in the higher viscosity of compound due to the increase of agglomeration force. In case of mechanically milled Sm-Co type powder, the viscosity of compound with the mixture of coarse powder of 125∼75 ㎛ and fine powder of average size of 4.9 ㎛ greatly depends on their relative contents and shows a minimum value at the 60 % coarse powder fraction. This means that the compound shows a maximum packing density at the 60% coarse powder fraction. Compound viscosities satisfied well the rheological model with the volume fraction of magnetic powder, and maximum volume fraction of magnetic powder in Sm-Co type compound for powder injection molding was about 66%.

  • This work was conducted to find the operating characteristics of an efficient wet grinding system designed to obtain fine rice husk ash powder. Once the rice husk was combusted and the thermal energy was recovered from the furnace, the ash was fed and pulverized in the grinding system resulting a fine powder to be used as a supplementary adding material to the portland cement. Grinding time (15, 30, 45 min), impeller speed (250, 500, 750 rpm), and mixed ratio (6.7, 8.4, 11.l, 20.9) were three operating factors examined for the performance of a wet-type stirred ball mill grinding system. For the operating conditions employed, mean diameter of fine ash powder, specific energy input, and grinding energy efficiency were in the range of $2.83{\sim}9.58{\mu}m,\;0.5{\sim}6.73kWh/kg,\;and\;0.51{\sim}3.27m^2/Wh$, respectively. With the wet-type stirred ball mill grinding system used in this study, the grinding energy efficiency decreased with the increase in total grinding time, impeller speed, and mixed ratio. The difference in specific surface area of powder linearly increased with logarithm in total number of impeller revolution and the grinding energy efficiency linearly decreased. Grinding time of 45 min, impeller speed of 500 rpm, and mixed ratio of 6.7 were chosen as the best operating condition. At this condition, mean particle diameter of the fine ash, grinding energy efficiency, grinding throughput, and specific energy input were $2.84{\mu}m,\;2.28m^2/Wh,\;0.17kg/h$, and 2.03kWh/kg, respectively. Wet fine grinding which generates no fly dust causing pollution and makes continuous operation easy, is appeared to be a promising solution to the automatization of rice husk ash grinding process.

  • Cobalt and VC powders were ball milled with M2 grade high speed steel powders under various ball to powder ratios. The powders milled under higher ball to powder ratio become finer, more irregular and have a broader size distribution, and thus possess a lower compressibility and a better sinterability regarding densification. Increasing the ball to powder ratio lowered the sintering temperature to obtain the density level necessary to isolate all the pores. Lowering the sintering temperature is very critical to maintain fine microstructure since grain and carbide coarsening are accelerated by higher sintering temperature due to more liquid phase formation. The powders obtained by ball milling at 20 to 1 ratio has the lowest compressibility but has the best sinterability, almost compatible to unmilled pure M2 powders. A sintered body over 97% theoretical density with fine microstructures having average grain size of ~10 microns was obtained from the powder by sintering at 1260 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in vacuum. XRD results indicate that two types of carbides are mainly present in the sintered structure, MC and $M_{6}C$ type. The MC type carbides are more or less round shaped and mainly located at the grain boundaries whereas the $M_{6}C$ type are angular shaped and mainly located inside the grains.

  • In order to investigate the durability of high performance polymer concrete composites, polymer concrete specimens were prepared using the ortho-type unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and iso-type UPR as a polymer binder and the calcium carbonate and silica fine powder as a filler. The durability of polymer concrete specimens was measured by hot water resistance, chemical resistance, pore analysis and SEM observation. The compressive strength of the specimen using the iso-type UPR was higher than that of using the ortho-type UPR, and the compressive strength of the specimen using the silica fine powder was higher than that of using the calcium carbonate filler. From hot water resistance results, it was found that the specimen using the iso-type UPR was superior to that of using the ortho-type UPR and the specimen using the calcium carbonate filler was superior to that of using the silica fine powder. The compressive strength reduction rate was measured after the chemical resistance test and the sodium hydroxide solution showed the highest reduction rate, followed by sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and calcium chloride solutions. When using the alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide, the weight reduction rate of the specimen using calcium carbonate was lower than that of using silica fine powder, while for the acidic solutions of sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, the weight reduction rate of the specimen using the silica fine powder was lower than that of using calcium carbonate.

  • PTFE is generally utilized as the form of composites with adding various fillers. The purpose of this paper lies on clarifying the friction and wear properties of the PTFE coating layer on steel. Especially, the effects of PTFE powder size for coating and surface roughness of the counter material on the properties are investigated. Sliding friction and wear tests are conducted at several sliding speeds by employing two types of PTFE coating layer using different powder sizes. One type of coating layer is composed of uniform fine powder, whereas the other type is made up of mixture powder of different sizes. As results, it is found that PTFE coating layer are effective to improve the wear resistance and to reduce the friction coefficient. It is clear that PTFE coating layers are abrasively removed by asperities of the counter material during sliding contact. However, PTFE coating layer with uniform fine powder shows somewhat better wear resistance than that with mixture powder of different sizes in low sliding speed region. It can be seen that the wear of the coating layer are drastically reduced because wear fragment from counter material are transferred to the coating layer. On the other hand, friction coefficient is shown not to be directly related with PTFE powder size in coating layer.
