The preparation of Y-doped $SrZrO_3$powder by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis was investigated as a representative system, in order to produce fine, single phase multicomponent oxide powders. A precursor solution containing metal nitrates, citric acid and ethylene glycol was atomized glycol was atomized with an ultrasonic spray nozzle. Gel particles formed by organic functional groups were pyrolyzed and subsequently calcined at $800^{\circ}C$ to obtain well-crystallized, single perovskite phase. Most of large particles exhibited macroscopic pores and weak agglomeration between primary particles. However, strong agglomeration was observed in the surfaces of large particles. The effect of the microstructures of these particles on size reduction to submicron particles was described.
Atomizing mode and powder characteristics of CuA1Ni base shape memory alloy in rotating disk atomization were investigated in accordance with disk materials and additional elements. Produced powders were classified into two types of spherical and flake shape. In the case of CuAlNiBTi and CuAlNiZr alloy, high yield rate and fine powder were obtained. This tendency was same when we used oxide coated disks. We concluded that this results were steno from the wetting characteristics change between molten metal and disk surface. Especially, due to the reactive properties of Ti and Zr with ceramic disk, the change of atomizing appearance and powder characteristics were noticeable.
Supported catalysts are at the heart of manufacturing essential chemical, agricultural and pharmaceutical products. While the longevity of such systems is critically hinged on the durability of metal nanoparticles, the conventional deposition/dispersion techniques are difficult to enhance the stability of the metal nanoparticles due to the lack of control over the interaction between metal-support. Regarding this matter, ex-solution has begun to be recognized as one of the most promising methodologies to develop thermally and chemically robust nanoparticles. By dissolving desired catalysts as a cation form into a parent oxide, fine and uniformly distributed metal nano-catalysts can be subsequently grown in situ under reductive heat treatment, which is referred to ex-solution. Over the several years, ex-solved analog has resulted in tremendous progress in the chemical-electrochemical applications due to the exceptional robustness coupled with ease synthesis. Herein, we describe the ex-solution process in detail which therein introducing the unique characteristics of ex-solved particles that distinguish them from conventionally dispersed nanoparticles. We then go through the history of science regarding the ex-solution phenomena and summarize several major research achievements which embrace the ex-solved nanoparticles to markedly promote the catalytic performances. In conclusion, we address the remaining challenges and the future perspectives of this rapidly growing field.
This study was performed to investigate the surface properties of electrochemically oxidized pure niobium by anodic oxide and hydrothermal treatment technique. Niobium specimens of $10\times10mm$ in dimension were polished sequentially from #600, #800, #1000 emery paper. The surface pure niobium specimens were anodized in an electrolytic solution that was dissolved calcium and phosphate in water. The electrolytic voltage was set in the range of 250 V and the current density was 10 $mA/cm^2$. The specimen was hydrothermal treated in high-pressure steam at 300$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours using an autoclave. Then, specimens were immersed in the Hanks' solution with pH 7.4 at 37$^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. The surface of specimen was characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis(EDX), potentiostat/galvanostat test, and cytotoxicity test. The results obtained was summarized as follows; According to the result of measuring corrosion behavior at 0.9% NaCl, corrosion resistance was improved more specimens treated with anodic oxide than in hydrothermal treated ones. The multi-porous oxide layer on surface treated through anodic oxidation showed a structure that fine pores overlap one another, and the early precipitation of apatite was observed on the surface of hydrothermal treated samples. According to the result of EDX after 30 days deposition in Hanks' solution, Ca/P was 1.69 in hydrothermal treated specimens. In MTT test, specimens treated through anodic oxidation and hydrothermal treated ones showed spectrophotometer similar to that of the control group. Thus no significant difference in cytotoxicity was observed (P>0.05).

Abstract The increasing application of $Al_2$,$O_3$ and related ceramics as engineering materials is because of their attractive properties of fine ceramics. One solution to the wide variety of ceramic to metal combination lies in the effective joining. Active metal brazing of $Al_2$,$O_3$, to STS304 was investigated using Cu -Ti alloys. Titanium additive is chosen since it is good oxide former~. Brazing is performed under vacuum($10^{-3}$-$10^{-4}$ torr), a temperature between 1100 and 120$0^{\circ}C$ and time of 0.5-1.5hr. The microstructure of the brazed joints of $Al_2$,$O_3$ to STS304 with Cu-Ti insert metals were examined by using optical microscope and SEM and reaction products were analyzed by using EDX, WDX and XRD. Also interfacial reactions occuring during the brazing of $Al_2$,$O_3$/Cu-Ti/STS304 system are discussed. Experimental results showed formation of Titanium oxide T$i_2$$O_3$ which is attributable to the joining $Al_2$,$O_3$ to STS304 with Cu-Ti insert metal.
The objective of this study was to analyze the in vitro and in vivo corrosion products of low and high copper amalgams. The four different types of amalgam alloy used in this study were Fine cut, Caulk spherical, Dispersalloy, and Tytin. After each amalgam alloy and Hg were triturated according to the directions of the manufacturer by means of the mechanical amalgamator(Amalgam mixer. Shinhung Co. Korea), the triturated mass was inserted into a cylindrical metal mold which was 12mm in diameter and 10mm in height. The mass was condensed by 150Kg/cm compressive force. The specimen was removed from the mold and aged at room temperature for about seven days. The standard surface preparation was routinely carried out by emery paper polishing under running water. In vitro amalgam specimens were potentiostatically polarized ten times in a normal saline solution at $37^{\circ}C$(potentiostat : HA-301. Hukuto Denko Corp. Japan). Each specimen was subjected to anodic polarization scan within the potential range -1700mV to+400mV(SCE). After corrosion tests, anodic polarization curves and corrosion potentials were obtained. The amount of component elements dissolved from amalgams into solution was measured three times by ICP AES(Inductive Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry: Plasma 40. Perkim Elmer Co. U.S.A.). The four different types of amalgam were filled in occlusal and buccal class I cavities of four human 3rd molars. After about five years the restorations were carefully removed after tooth extraction to preserve the structural details including the deteriorated margins. The occlusal surface, amalgam-tooth interface and the fractured surface of in vivo amalgam corrosion products were analyzed. In vivo and in vitro amalgam specimens were examined and analyzed metallographically by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope: JSM 840. Jeol Co. Japan) and EDAX(Energy Dispersive Micro X-ray Analyser: JSM 840. Jeol Co. Japan). 1. The following results are obtained from in vitro corrosion tests. 1) Corrosion potentials of all amalgams became more noble after ten times passing through the in vitro corrosion test compared to first time. 2) After times through the test, released Cu concentration in saline solution was almost equal but highest in Fine cut. Ag and Hg ion concentration was highest in Caulk spherical and Sn was highest in Dispersalloy. 3) Analyses of surface corrosion products in vitro reveal the following results. a)The corroded surface of Caulk spherical has Na-Sn-Cl containing clusters of $5{\mu}m$ needle-like crystals and oval shapes of Sn-Cl phase, polyhedral Sn oxide phase. b)In Fine cut, there appeared to be a large Sn containing phase, surrounded by many Cu-Sn phases of $1{\mu}m$ granular shapes. c)Dispersalloy was covered by a thick reticular layer which contained Zn-Cl phase. d)In Tytin, a very thin, corroded layer had formed with irregularly growing Sn-Cl phases that looked like a stack of plates. 2. The following results are obtained by an analysis of in vivo amalgam corrosion products. 1) Occlusal surfaces of all amalgams were covered by thick amorphous layers containing Ca-P elements which were abraded by occlusal force. 2) In tooth-amalgam interface, Ca-P containing products were examined in all amalgams but were most clearly seen in low copper amalgams. 3) Sn oxide appeared as a polyhedral shape in internal space in Caulk spherical and Fine cut. 4) Apical pyramidal shaped Sn oxide and curved plate-like Sn-Cl phases resulted in Dispersalloy. 5) In Tytin, Sn oxide and Sn hydroxide were not seen but polyhedral Ag-Hg phase crystal appeared in internal space which assumed a ${\beta}_l$ phase.

This paper deals with the characteristics and reduction methods of the plasma luminosity caused between the ZnO surge arrester block and metal electrodes. In this study, the impulse current generator that can generate $8/20[{\mu}s]$ impulse currents with a peak short-circuit of 10[kA] is designed and fabricated. Plasma luminosity phenomena for fine and used ZnO blocks were observed as a function of the contact states between the ZnO block and electrodes and the polarity of applied impulse voltages. As a result, discharge luminous events are produced near the contact edges between the ZnO block and metal electrodes. The discharge plasma luminosity between the ZnO surge arrester block and low potential electrode is more intensive than that between the ZnO surge arrester block and high potential electrode. Surface flashover of ZnO blocks are mainly caused by plasma generation near the edge of metal electrode. Also, plasma luminosity for the fine ZnO blocks is less than that for the used ZnO blocks. Plasma luminosity at the contact of the ZnO block and ring-type electrode is more intensive than that at the contact of ZnO block and disk electrode. It is desirable to use the disk electrode with the proper contact area to reduce the plasma luminosity caused at the contact point between the ZnO block and electrodes.
Substantially improved methods for the preparation of europium-doped yttrium oxide red phosphor with the inclusion of alkali metal halides having a general formula $(Y_{1-x}Eu_x)_2O_3$:MX where 0.025${\leq}$x${\leq}$0.2 and MX is alkali halide in the mole ratio 0.025 to 0.6, more preferably between 0.05 to 0.2 mole, are reported. Another series of the red phosphor materials with general formula $(Y_{1-x-y}Gd_xEu_y)_2O_3$:MX where 0.05${\leq}$x${\leq}$0.40 and 0.025${\leq}$y${\leq}$0.20 and MX is alkali halide in the mole ratio 0.025 to 0.5, more preferably between 0.1 to 0.2 mole, has also been presented. The inclusion of alkali halide greatly increase the luminance of the materials. The materials are very soft with fine particle size less than 100nm. The phosphorescent materials have good luminance in VUV region.

In this paper the intrinsic influence of micron-sized nickel particle reinforcements on microstructure, micro-hardness tensile properties and tensile fracture behavior of nano-alumina particle reinforced magnesium alloy AZ31 composite is presented and discussed. The unreinforced magnesium alloy (AZ31) and the reinforced nanocomposite counterpart (AZ31/1.5 vol.% $Al_2O_3$/1.5 vol.% Ni] were manufactured by solidification processing followed by hot extrusion. The elastic modulus and yield strength of the nickel particle-reinforced magnesium alloy nano-composite was higher than both the unreinforced magnesium alloy and the unreinforced magnesium alloy nanocomposite (AZ31/1.5 vol.% $Al_2O_3$). The ultimate tensile strength of the nickel particle reinforced composite was noticeably lower than both the unreinforced nano-composite and the monolithic alloy (AZ31). The ductility, quantified by elongation-to-failure, of the reinforced nanocomposite was noticeably higher than both the unreinforced nano-composite and the monolithic alloy. Tensile fracture behavior of this novel material was essentially normal to the far-field stress axis and revealed microscopic features reminiscent of the occurrence of locally ductile failure mechanisms at the fine microscopic level.
This study introduced wastewater treatment method by High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS). HGMS treatment was high efficient method for various industrial wastewaters. The system is currently research state, but we have surveyed commercialize the technology for industry. In rolling plate process, coolant wastewater was recycled by sedimentation and sand filter system. It needs several large reservoirs and long time to remove suspended solid (SS) like metal fines and iron oxide in hot rolling plate making process. If removing rate of suspended solid in rolling coolant wastewater is improved by using HGMS system, the productivity of working process can be increased and the area of reservoir can be reduced. We manufactured high temperature superconducting HGMS system that had a purpose to treatment of coolant wastewater in rolling plate process. We fabricated the prototypes of magnetic matrix filter consisting of stainless steel 430 mesh, which is a core component in the magnetic separation system, In our basic preliminary experiment using HGMS system, it has been clear that the fine paramagnetic particles in the coolant wastewater obtained from rolling plate process of POSCO can be separated with high efficiency.
