  • In construction industry, the term 'procurement' is considered as a project based job where clients and contractors are always keen to observe performance indicators. These indicators represent financial and non-financial efficiency of project activities. Among these, the monitoring of financial indicators such as cost monitoring is an ongoing process and its importance cannot be undermined during the project life cycle. It can be monitored by using traditional approach of direct reporting of actual cost against budget. However, the comparison of budget versus actual spending does not indicate the worth of the work which is completed at any given time. This approach does not represent the true cost performance of the project. Because of these limitations, this paper discusses the applications of Earned Value Analysis (EVA) for cost monitoring of construction projects in Malaysia. Besides traditional approach, EVA is a three-dimensional approach that compares three cost indicators i.e. the budgeted value of work scheduled with the earned value of physical work completed and the actual cost of work completed. Therefore, cost monitoring by EVA is an objective measure of actual work performed. This paper uses a case study, an example application of EVA as a cost monitoring tool. This case study reaffirms the benefits of using EVA for project cash flow analysis and forecasting.

  • This study aims to describe the role of corporate governance as a moderator in electronic financial disclosure that adopts Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) and Company Characteristics on value relevance. The population in this study was all manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2017 to 2018, totaling 166 companies. The sampling technique used purposive sampling method, namely, manufacturing companies that publish fully audited financial statements by December 31 of the year 2017-2018. The method used in this research is a quantitative description using the financial statements of manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange that have adopted XBRL during the 2017-2018 period. The data analysis method used is multiple regression analysis with moderating variables. The results of this study show a negative and insignificant effect of XBRL on value relevance, a significant negative effect of size on value relevance, a positive and insignificant effect of growth on value relevance, and a significant positive effect of profit on value relevance; meanwhile, corporate governance moderation variable has an insignificant effect in all hypotheses. Suggestions are to increase the number of variables that have an important role in value relevance and expand the number of research objects to be compared.

  • As the Jordanian government is in the process of implementing accrual-based IPSAS, this study aims to provide academics' perspectives on the effective implementation of accrual-based IPSAS in Jordan to authorities and regulators. The findings of a survey of 124 accounting professors at Jordanian institutions reveal that adopting accrual-based IPSAS will aid in presenting the realistic financial status of governmental bodies, with various advantages to adopting accrual-based IPSAS (e.g., enhance assets and liabilities management, decision-making process, transparency, expenditures management). On the other side, we discovered that change is met with reluctance because the majority of public-sector accountants are untrained and unqualified to apply the accrual-based IPSAS. Another main challenge is the cost of implementing the accrual-based IPSAS in the Jordanian public sector is very high. To address these issues, employees should be motivated by providing suitable training programs, reward systems, and top management support and commitment to a successful transition. Finally, we suggested that Jordanian governments commit to using IPSAS in the public sector to increase residents' socioeconomic advantages. Public sectors should implement IPSASs for improved management, transparency in financial reporting, accountability, and regulatory and supervisory agencies.

  • Purpose - This study investigates whether financial analysts consider the intangible investment implicit in selling, general, and administrative (SG&A) expenditures to forecast firms' future earnings. Research design, data, and methodology - Using 52,609 U.S. firm-year observations spanning 1984-2016, this study examines the association between the Intangible investment implicit in SG&A expenditures and properties of analysts' earnings forecasts. To estimate the Intangible investment of SG&A, I decompose SG&A excluding R&D and advertising expenditures into maintenance and investment components following Enache and Srivastava (2017). Results - The main results show that analysts' earnings forecast errors and dispersion in analysts' forecasts increase with the intangible investment derived from SG&A because the investment component of SG&A affects future earnings and the uncertainty of those earnings. However, these results are weakened in the wholesale and retail industries where firms have a higher level of investment component of SG&A. I attribute the weaker results to low R&D expenditures in those industries. Conclusion - This study indicates that financial analysts incorporate the intangible investment of SG&A into their earnings forecasts differently across firms and industries. Furthermore, this study supports the argument for the separate reporting of the investment nature of SG&A from other operating expenses such as maintenance nature of SG&A.

  • The majority of graphs and visuals made publicly available by Thai listed companies tend to be disjointed and minimal. Only a little over fifty percent of the total 478 companies included graphic representations of their business operations and performance in the form of two or three dimensional spreadsheet based graphs in their annual reports, investor relations documents, websites and so on. For novice users, these visual representations are unlikely to give the big picture of what is the company's financial position and performance. Neither will they tell where the company stands in its own operating environment. The existing graphics and visuals, in very rare cases, can provide a sense of the company's future outlook. For boundary users such as audit committees whose duty is to promote good governance through transparency and disclosure, preliminary interview results show that there is some doubt as to whether the inclusion of big-picture visuals can really be of use to minority shareholders. These boundary users expect to see more insightful visuals beyond those produced by traditional spreadsheets which will enable them to learn to cope with the on-going turbulence in today's business environment more quickly. However, the debate is still going on as to where to draw the line between internal or external reporting visuals.
