  • Pretreatment technologies are defined as technologies that prepare or condition dredged material for subsequent, more rigorous treatment processes. The objectives of this study are to test the feasibility of treating dredged sediment using pretreatment process(hydrocyclone, sedimentation basin, and flotation), and to estimate design parameters for a pilot-plant design. The final goal of the project is to recycle the dredged sediment that is otherwise reused as construction materials.

  • In this paper, we estimate multiple change-points when the data follow the normal distributions in the Bayesian way. Evolutionary Monte Carlo (EMC) algorithm is applied into general Bayesian model with variable-dimension parameters and shows its usefulness and efficiency as a promising tool especially for computational issues. The method is applied to the humidity data of Seoul and the final model is determined based on BIC.

  • This paper propose a prefilter type inverse control algorithm using chaotic neural networks. Since the chaotic neural networks show robust characteristics in approximation and adaptive learning for nonlinear dynamic system, the chaotic neural networks are suitable for controlling robotic manipulators. The structure of the proposed prefilter type controller compensate velocity of the PD controller. To estimate the proposed controller, we implemented to the Cartesian space control of three-axis PUMA robot and compared the final result with recurrent neural network(RNN) controller.

  • Because the compressive properties such as compressive stiffness and compressive maximum strength of the fabric composite materials are essential to analyse the drape behaviour and estimate the quality of the final products, compressive tests of fabric composites with different stacking sequences were performed. Appropriate shape and dimensions for the compressive test specimens were prepared and several specimens with different conditions were tested and compared with each other.

  • The main purpose of this study was to estimate a new regression model to explain the relationship between urban forest and air temperature in summer, 2001. This study consists of two parts: correlation coefficient analysis and regression analysis. According to correlation coefficient analysis, thermal infra-red radiations of the major land use categories found significant difference in each category. However there were no significant relationship between the data (thermal infra-red radiation and NDVI) derived from Landsat-7 ETM+ image and air temperature at Automatic Weather Stations(AWSs). After estimating various regression models for summer air temperature, the final models were chosen. The final regression models consisted of two variables such as forest m and traffic facilities area. The regression models explained over 78% of the variability in air temperatures. The regression models with variables of forest area and traffic facilities area showed that the coefficient of the first variable was even more significant than the second one. However, the negative impact of the traffic facilities area was slightly greater than the positive impact of the forest area. Consequently, the effects of forest area and traffic facilities area were apparent to explain summer air temperature in Seoul. Therefore two policies have the most important implications to mitigate the summer air temperature in Seoul: to expand and to conserve the urban forest; and to change the Oafnc facilities'characteristics. The results from this study are expected to be useful not merely in informing the public that urban forest mitigates summer air temperahne, but in urging the necessity of budgets for trees and managing urban forests. It is recommended that field swey of summer air temperature be Performed for the vadidation of the models. • OBJECTIVES : The objective of this study is to estimate the appropriate storage required for deicing materials in Gangwon-do for successful snow removal operations during the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games. The final estimates of the deicing chemicals can be used by public agencies to aid decision making. METHODS : First, the database that exists in the road snow-removal management system (RSMS) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, South Korea was used to determine historical characteristics of snow removal experiences in Gangwon-do. The database includes historical information, including regional and road weather data and number of snow-removal works. Second, both the maximum and the actual amount of storages used for deicing materials in the past three years were analyzed. Lastly, the final estimates of the deicing materials were evaluated using an additional equation. It considers frequency of salt spray application, total administrative road length estimated by road agencies, and number of days required for snow removal works in Gangwon-do. Consequently, the results show that significant differences were not observed between the final estimates and the maximum amount used during the past three years. RESULTS : The final estimates of the deicing materials are almost similar to the maximum amount used during the past three years in Gangwon-do. CONCLUSIONS : The study shows that the estimates of deicing chemicals can be useful when decision making is required for the snow-removal policy.

  • Adaptive constant false alarm rate(CFAR) algorithm is used for good detection probability as well as constant false alarm rate in clutter background. Especially, filtering technique adaptive to spatial variation is necessary for improving detection quality in non stationary clutter environment which has spatial correlation and large magnitude deviation. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional block interpolation(TBI) adaptive CFAR algorithm that calculates the node estimate in the fred two dimensional region and subsequently determines the final estimate for each resolution cell by two-dimensional interpolation. The proposed method is efficient for filtering abnormal ejection by adopting distribution median in fixed region and also has advantage of reducing required memory space by using estimation method which gets final values after calculating the block node values. Through simulations, we show that the proposed method is superior to the traditional adaptive CFAR algorithms which are transversal or recursive in aspect of the detection performance and required memory space.

  • The method of nonlinear parameter estimation(NPE), which is a statistical and an inverse method, is used to estimate the thermal diffusivity of the porous insulation material. In order to apply the NPE method for measuring the thermal diffusivity, and algorithm for programing suitable to IBM personal computer is established, and is studied the statistical treatment of experimental data and theory of estimation. The experimental data obtained by discrete measurement using a constant heat flux technique are used to find the boundary conditions, initial conditions, and the thermal diffusivity, and then the final values are compared with the values obtained by some different methods. The results are presented as follows:(1) NPE method is used to establish the estimation of the thermal diffusivity and compared results with experimental output shows, that this method can be applicable to define the thermal diffusivity without considering hear flux types. (2) Because of all of the temperatures obtained by the discrete measurement on each steps of time are used to estimate the thermal diffusivity. Although some error in the temperature measurements of temperature are included in estimating process, its influences on the final value are minimzed in NPE method. (3) NPE method can reduce the experimental time including the time of data collecting in a few minutes and can take smaller specimen compared with steady state method. If the tube-type furnace is used, also the adjusting time of surrounding temperature can be reduced.

  • Estimating project costs during the early stage of conceptual planning is very important when deciding whether to approve the project and allocate an appropriate budget. However, due to greater uncertainties involved in a project, it is challenging to estimate costs during this initial stage within a reasonable tolerance. This paper attempts to develop a cost-estimate model for public road projects under these circumstances and limitations. In the conceptual planning stage of a road project, there is only limited information for cost estimation, for example, such input data as total length of the route, origin and destination, number of lanes, general geographic characteristics of the route, and other basic attributes. This implies that the model should individuate suitable but restricted information without considering detailed features such as quantity of earthwork and a detailed route of a given condition. With these limited facts, this paper applies a case-based reasoning (CBR) method to solve a new problem by deriving similar past problems, which in turn is used to estimate the cost of a given project based on best-fitted previous cases. To develop a CBR cost-estimate model, the authors classified 8 representative variables, including project type, the number of lanes, total length, road design grades, etc. Then, we developed the CBR model, primarily by using 180 actual cases of public road projects, procured over the last decade. With the CBR model, it was found that the degree of error in estimation can be reasonably reduced, to below approximately 30% compared to the final costs estimated upon the completion of detailed design.
