Using an experimental method named filtration-permeation, the influence of sedimentation during filtration was studied for the suspensions composed of particles and that of flocs. The average specific cake resistances measured by filtration do not give accurate values because of the sedimentations during filtration, but the permeation data give quite accurate values. The prolonged permeation rates for the cake formed from particulate suspension do not change, but that rate from the floc filtration changes by the sweeping of flocculant. It is proposed that the cake compressibility can be measured with one set of filtration-permeation experiment by step increase of pressure during permeation period. The another experimental method which can shorten experimental time for floc filtration using filtrationpermeation is also proposed.

Using the new experimental method named "filtration-permeation", the average specific resistances which plays an important role in designing cake filtration apparatus and the development of cake filtration theory were measured in this study. By this new experimental method, two kinds of average specific resistances are measured. The one from the filtration is named 'filtration average specific resistance $\alpha_{avf}$, and the other from the permeation of particle eliminated water through the pre-formed cake is named 'permeation average specific resistance $\alpha_{avf}$. The "filtration-permeation" method is applied to three different kind of suspensions(i.e. particulate suspension, pre-flocculated suspension and macro-molecule suspension) to obtain filtration and permeation average specific resistances. A theoretical procedure of cake filtration is studied based on the values of permeation average specific resistance. With the study it was concluded that the influence of the sedimentation during particlulate filtration operation could not be ignored as commonly used. And the solid content of suspension, S, which also regarded usually as constant, changes during filtration of particles. It is also verified that the exact value of solid content of cake for floe filtration could not be obtained. These significant problems are all solved by our new "filtration-permeation" experimental method.
The average specific cake resistance, the most important indicator for cake filtration and solid-liquid separation, is measured by filtration experiment. But the exact value is difficult to measure because of the other influences such as sedimentation during filtration. This study, a little more stable method named filtration-permeation is proposed for measuring average specific cake resistance. The filtration-permeation is composed of permeation of particle eliminated water through pre-formed cake by filtration. Using 1 wt% calcium carbonate suspension, the filtration-permeation experiments were performed for 8 kinds of filter media at the conditions of 0.5 atm and 0.2 atm, 1 and 3 sheets of filter media. At each specific condition, three to five times filtration-permeation were accomplished. As a result, stable permeation speed is measured. According to this experimental result, the characteristics of permeation and the effect of sedimentation are analyzed with Ruth's equation. The one way analysis of variance (one way ANOVA) is applied to the average specific cake resistances of filtration and permeation obtained with the selected three kinds of filter media. The average specific cake resistances between 0.5 atm and 0.2 atm by filtration do not distinguished, but those by permeation is perfectly distinguished. The experimental results during permeation have a very narrow distribution than that measured during filtration. The analysis of filtration experiments, it was verified that the resistance of filter medium by traditional method is of no significance. Finally, the migration of small particles through the medium composed of fiber glass at low pressure was studied.
The definition of cake is not established for cake filtration, and especially the definition was impossible for the filtration of the floc already sedimented. The definition is proposed with the experimental method named 'filtration-permeation'. The limit of water content which can be achieved with cake filtration of floc was established with the definition of cake. The expression operation of which the purpose is to reduce the water content of pre-formed filter cake is calculated with our 'unified theory on solid-liquid separation' and compared with the experimental results. The importance of expression is analyzed by the calculated whole procedure of cake filtration and expression. The method determining the most effective operational conditions of filter press including the cake discharge and washing time is proposed.
Filtration on horizontal filter medium facing upward is accompanied by sedimentation. When sedimentation phenomenon is not considered, the average specific cake resistance by filtration could be in error more than two times. In the previous paper on this subject, it was insisted that the solid mass fraction of suspension changes in filtration period by sedimentation. But we could not find out the degree of change. At the first half of this paper, the average specific cake resistance measured by permeation will be proved to be exact in several means. The average specific cake resistance conventionally measured by filtration does not give correct results because it uses initial solid mass fraction of suspension. Then we calculated the changed solid mass fraction of suspension due to sedimentation during filtration by the experimental values obtained "filtration-permeation" method. We also determined the solid mass fraction at a certain moment of filtration from the suspension height and a new equation derived in this study. The two results were compared and proven that they almost matched.
Ultrafiltration membranes based on anion charged poly(bis[4-(3-aminophenoxy)phenyl]sulfone pyromellite) imide derivatives (ACPI) were prepared by the phase inversion method. The polymers have good solubility in aprotic polar solvents. The composition of casting solution and the casting conditions played an important role in determining the permeation characteristics of membrane because the membrane structure could be controlled by the preparation conditions. The extent of fouling-repression was observed by the relative ratio of permeate flux ($J_t$)/pure water flux ($J_0$) and the membrane filtration index (MFI). The characteristics were measured by aqueous solution of bovine serum albumin (BSA) over a pH range of 2.5-9.0. The ACPI membrane having a hydrophilic property was less fouled than the membrane prepared from the original polyimide. With increasing the ion exchange capacity of ACPI membrane, th $\varepsilon$ relative ratio of flux was higher while the membrane filtration index was lower as compared with the original polyimide membrane. From the further away from isoelectric point of bovin serum albumin, the permeation was higher as well as the formation of fouling was more diminish. ACPI membranes having various their properties could be obtained. Further, it was proved that their permeation properties could be determined from the preparation conditions, various operating conditions, and dim $\varepsilon$ rent ion exchange capacity of anion charged polyimide derivatives.
The aims of this study were to encapsulate arbutin (AR) in liposome to enhance the skin-whitening activity, and to investigate the effect of liposome formulation on the entrapment efficiency (EE%), skin permeation rate and skin deposition. The liposomes were prepared by a film dispersion method with several different formulations and were separated from the solution by using the gel-filtration method. The physical (size distribution, morphology) and chemical (drug entrapment efficiency, hairless mouse skin permeation and deposition) properties of liposomes were characterized. The entrapment efficiency in all liposome formulations varied between 4.35% and 17.63%, and was dependent on the lipid content. The particle sizes of liposomes were in the range of $179.9{\sim}212.8\;nm$ in all liposome formulations. Although the permeation rate of AR in the liposome formulations decreased compared with AR solution, the deposition amount of AR in the epidermis/dermis layers increased in AR liposomal formulation. These results suggest that liposomal formulation could enhance the skin deposition of hydrophilic skin-whitening agents, thereby enhancing their activities.
In this study, permeation experiments were conducted using naturally circulating spherical beads, backwashable plate membrane and the air supplied from the bottom of the MBR. The activated sludge solution was maintained at 8,000 mg/L of MLSS and compared transmembrane pressure (TMP) with respect to FR (filtration and relaxation), FR/BW (filtration and relaxation/backwashing), SFCO (sinusoidal filtration continuous operation) and SFCO/BW (sinusoidal filtration continuous operation/backwashing). As the backwashing flux decreased from 47 to $14L/m^2{\cdot}hr$, the TMP increased generally, but the TMP of FR system increased significantly comparing with SFCO. In addition, the backwashing method reduced more TMP comparing to the cleaning method using spherical beads, and it was confirmed that the operation method using the spherical beads and the backwashing simultaneously is more effective than each method.
This study concluded the results of a research on the features of cement based permeation grout, based on some important grout parameters, such as the rheological properties (yield stress and viscosity), coefficient of permeability to grout ($k_G$) and the inject ability of cement grout (N and $N_c$ assessment), which govern the performance of cement based permeation grouting in porous media. Due to the limited knowledge of these important grout parameters and other influencing factors (filtration pressure, rate and time of injection and the grout volume) used in the field work, the application of cement based permeation grouting is still largely a trial and error process in the current practice, especially in the local construction industry. It is seen possible to use simple formulas in order to select the injection parameters and to evaluate their inter-relationship, as well as to optimize injection spacing and times with respect to injection source dimensions and in-situ permeability. The validity of spherical and cylindrical flow model was not verified by any past research works covered in the literature review. Therefore, a theoretical investigation including grout flow models and significant grout parameters for the design of permeation grouting was conducted in this study. This two grout flow models were applied for three grout mixes prepared for w/c=0.75, w/c=1.00 and w/c=1.25 in this study. The relations between injection times, radius, pump pressure and flow rate for both flow models were investigated and the results were presented. Furthermore, in order to investigate these two flow model, some rheological properties of the grout mixes, particle size distribution of the cement used in this study and some geotechnical properties of the sand used in this work were defined and presented.
Matrix assisted laser desorption ionization in mass spectrometry is a fast and accurate method to determine the molecular weight of natural and synthetic polymers. Unknown peptides such as elastase inhibitor and $\small{D}$-hydantoinase were analyzed using sinapinic acid as matrix and their molecular weights were compared with the results from protein sequencer and gel filtration chomatography, respectively. Synthetic polymers such as polyethyleneglycol, polypropyleneglycol, polydimethylsiloxane, and polystyrene were analyzed using matrices such as 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hdroxyazobenzenecarboxylic acid, and 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether. Average molecular weights of polystyrene were compared with molecular weights by gel permeation chromatography.
