Small scale paint overspray booths are being operated nationwidely, for repair of passenger car body parts. paint aerosols are emitted from the paint overspray booth in operations. In paint overspray booth operations without ventilation system and air pollutants collection unit, it may land on nearby equipment. In this study a removal of sticky paint aerosol for application of the small-scale overspray paint booth. it's cause the surface of filter bag from generated sticky paint aerosol. To remove adhesion of paint aerosol the agglomerating agents are injected and mixed with sticky paint aerosols prior to reach the filter bag. The paint spray rate was set as $10{\pm}5g/min$ from air-atomized spray guns in the spray booth, injection rate of agglomerating was $10{\pm}5g/min$ in the mixing chamber. The filtration velocity including air pollutants varied from 0.2 m/min to 0.4 m/min. Bag cleaning air pressure was set as $5.0kg_f/min$ for detaching dust cake from surface of filter bag. Bag cleaning interval at the filtration velocity of 0.2 m/min was around 3 times longer than that of the 0.4 m/min. The residual pressure drop maintained highest value at the highest filtration velocity. Fractional efficiency of 99.952%~99.971% was possible to maintain for the particle size of 2.5 microns. Total collection efficiency at the filtration velocity of 0.2 m/min was 99.42%. During this study we could confirm high collection efficiency and long cleaning intervals for the test with filtration velocity of 0.2 m/min indicating an optimal value for the given dimensions of the test unit and test operating conditions.
Particle breakthrough can occur by either the breakoff of previously captured particles (or flocs) or the direct passage of some influent particles through the filter. Filtration experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale filter using spherical glass beads with a diameter of 0.55 mm as collectors. A single type of particle suspension (Min-U-Sil 5, nearly pure $SiO_2$) and three different destabilization methods (pH control, alum and polymer destabilization) were utilized. The operating conditions were similar to those of standard media filtration practice: a filtration velocity of 5 m/h. To assess the possibility of particle detachment during the normal filtration, a hydraulic shock load (20% increase of flow rate) was applied after 4 hours of normal filtration. The magnitude of particle detachment was proportional to the particle size for non-Brownian particles. At the same time, less favorable particles, i.e., particles with larger surface charge, were easily detached during the hydraulic shock load. Therefore, proper particle destabilization before filtration is crucial for maximum particle removal as well as minimum particle breakthrough.
In the present study a feasibility of a novel filtration process using synthetic for secondary effluent reclamation was investigated. Polyurethane was chosen as a filter medium among tested three media. Compressibility and up-flow velocity were changed to determine the optimum operation for the system. An equation was introduced to express the relationship between the removal efficiency and up-flow velocity. In pilot study, the synthetic medium filtration with compression showed very stable effluent quality without clogging trouble, though the system operated with 3 times higher filtration rate and much longer backwashing interval than conventional systems.

An understanding of particle-particle interactions in filtration requires studying the detachment as well as the attachment of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles captured in a granular media filter can be released by changing the physicochemical factors. In this study, the detachment of captured silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in granular media filtration was examined under different ionic strengths, ion type, and the presence or absence of natural organic matter (NOM). Filtration velocity and ionic strength were chosen as the physical and chemical factors to cause the detachment. Increasing filtration velocity caused a negligible amount of AgNP detachment. On the other hand, lowering ionic strength showed different release amounts depending on the background ions, implying a population of loosely captured particles inside the filter bed. Overall detachment was affected by ionic strength and ion type, and to a lesser degree by NOM coating which resulted in slightly more detachment (in otherwise identical conditions) than in the absence of that coating, possibly by steric effects. The secondary energy minimum with Na ions was deeper and wider than with Ca ions, probably due to the lack of complexation with citrate and charge neutralization that would be caused by Ca ions. This result implies that the change in chemical force by reducing ionic strength of Na ions could significantly enhance the detachment compared to that caused by a change in physical force, due to a weak electrostatic deposition between nanoparticles and filter media. A modification of the 1-D filtration model to incorporate a detachment term showed good agreement with experimental data; estimating the detachment coefficients for that model suggested that the detachment rate could be similar regardless of the amount of previously captured AgNPs.
The purpose of this study is to determine the performance characteristics of the paint particulate and volatile organic compounds(VOCs) simultaneous removal from the spraying paint booth in the laboratory and real site by sticky paint particulate and VOCs simultaneous removal demonstration unit. The sticky paint particulate and VOCs simultaneous removal unit is composed of the horizontal type pleated filter modules and the zig-zag type granular activated carbon packing modules. The test conditions at the laboratory are $50.15g/m^3$ of average paint aerosol concentration and 300 ppm of VOCs concentration which were same as the working conditions of spraying paint booth in the real site. But, the demonstration conditions at the real site are varied according to the working condition of spraying paint booth for the kind of passenger car bodies. The test results at the laboratory obtained that 99% of total particulate collection efficiency at 0.62 m/min of filtration velocity and 84% at 1.77 m/min of filtration velocity. The VOCs removal efficiencies are 97% at $3500hr^{-1}$ of gas hour space velocity and 59% at $10,000hr^{-1}$ of gas hour space velocity. In the real site test, the average removal efficiency of PM10 was measured to be 99.65%, the average removal efficiency of PM2.5 was 99.38%, the average removal efficiency of PM1 was 98.52%, and the average removal efficiency of VOCs was 89%.
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of hybrid collection system combined with centrifugal force of cyclone and filtration of bag filter in one unit system. The experiment and numerical simulation are executed for the analysis of collection efficiency and pressure drop characteristics of hybrid system in comparison with those of a general fabric bag filter with the various experimental parameters such as inlet velocity(filtration velocity), dust concentration and dust type, etc.. In present system, dust particles tangentially coming into the system body are controlled by the centrifugal force effect, and the next collection is made out by the filtration mechanism in the fabric filter media. Therefore, the effective first collection causes the decrease of dust loading on the fabric filter, and it presents quite a lower pressure drop of fabric filter than that of a general fabric filter. At the inlet velocity, $21{\sim}27m/sec$ and inlet concentration(fly ash) $300mg/m^3$, pressure drops through the filter media of hybrid system are shown lower as $10{\sim}22mmH_2O$ comparing to those($17{\sim}33mmH_2O$) of a general fabric bag filter.
There is a growing interest to develop an eco-friendly air cleaner with high performance through a remanufacturing process. Two kinds of polyurethane filter media, a coarse (Filter-A) and a fine filter media (Filer-B), are used in this study to protect a vehicle engine from airborne particles. In order to improve the collection performance of the filters (Filter-A, Filter-B), an oil coating technology on the filter surface was introduced. As a result, inertial force is a dominant collection mechanism for a dry filter media, so that collection efficiency increases with increasing filtration velocity. However, intra-structure change of an oil-coated filter media influences on the collection mechanism, which shows a non-linear collection efficiency curve in terms of filtration velocity. The result shows that the developed filter media are eco-friendly and effective to protect a vehicle engine from airborne particles especially at low filtration velocity.
With continuous industrial development, the types, and amount of particulate matter (PM) have been increasing. Since 2018, environmental standards regarding PM have become more stringent. Pulse air jet bag filters are suitable for PM under the 20 ㎛ and, can function regardless of size, concentration and type. Filtration velocity and shape are important factors in the operation and design of the pulse air jet bag filters however, few established studies support this theory. In this research, numerical simulations were conducted based on experimental values and, several methods were employed for minimizing the pressure drop. In the pilot system, as the inlet duct velocity was faster than 19 m/sec, flow was not distributed equally and, re-entrainment occurred due to the hopper directional vortex. The multi-inlet system decelerated the hopper directional vortex by 25 ~ 30%, thereby decreasing total pressure drop by 6.6 ~ 14.7%. The guide vane system blocked the hopper directional vortex, which resulted optimal vane angle of 53°. The total pressure of the guide vane system increased by 0.5 ~ 3% at 1.5 m/min conditions. However, the filtration pressure drop decreased by 4.8 ~ 12.3% in all conditions, thereby reducing the operating cost of filter bags.
Granular media filtration is used almost universally as the last particle removal process in conventional water treatment plants. Therefore, superb particle removal efficiency is needed during this process to ensure a high quality of drinking water. However, every particle can not be removed during granular media filtration. Besides the pattern of particle attachment is different depending on physicochemical aspects of particles and suspension. Filtration experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale filter using spherical glass beads with a diameter of 0.55 mm as collectors. A single type of particle suspension (Min-U-Sil 5) and pH control was used to destabilize particles. The operating conditions were similar to those of standard media filtration practice: a filtration velocity of 5 m/h. More favorable particles, i.e., particles with smaller surface charge, were well attached to the collectors especially during the early stage of filtration. This selective attachment of the lower charged particles caused the zeta potential distribution (ZPD) of the effluent to move to a more negative range. On the other hand, the ZPD of the effluent did not keep moving from less negative to more negative during the later stages of filtration, and this result was thought to be caused by two reasons: ripening effects and the detachment of flocs.
