  • The objective of this study it to evaluate the microbial safety in rapid sand filters adapted in most drinking water treatment plants. The potential pathogens to cause water quality problems Are presumed to be Giardia and Gryptosporidium. They look like particles in view of their size. It has been reported that if the number of particles (larger than 2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in water) is less than 100 per mL and its turbidity is below 0.1 NTU, it is considered as a safe water in terms of pathogens. In order to achieve such a good water quality. filter-aids (chemicals) were added to the inlet-channel of filter and their effectiveness was evaluated on the basis of water quality factors such as turbidity and particle counting. This study was conducted in she three steps of experiment: jar test. pilot plant test and real water treatment plant test (P plant in seoul). The experiment reult of the P water treatment showed that cationic polyamine was the most effective in the removal of particles and turbidity at the does of 0.25 mg/L. The turbidity without filer-aids showed in the range of 0.12 ~0.17 NTU during filtration and 0.14 NTU on the average. However. with addition of polyamine, the turbidity represented below(or less than) 0.1 NTU after 20 min in the start of filtration and kept 0.08 NTU on the average. On the other hand, as for number of particles, while no filter-aids led to the range of 111 ~270 per mL and 190 on the average, addition of polydmine led to 113 per mL on talc average, and kept below100 per mL after 20 min in the start of filtration.

  • The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) has been the subject of much research as a key indicator for diagnosing, treating, and monitoring kidney function. The gamma camera method (Gates method) is simple and allows simultaneous acquisition of GFR and renal scintigraphy for each kidney, however its accuracy is inferior. This study aimed to investigate changes in GFR depending on how region of interest (ROI) are set up, which is one of many factors influencing accuracy. GFR was calculated by setting the ROI for each phase of the image acquisition time (Gates-1: 0~1 minutes, Gates-2: 1~3 minutes, Gates-3: 3~27 minutes), and statistical significance was verified based on probability value 0.05 through ANOVA analysis. While there was no statistically significant difference among results from Gates-1, 2, 3 (p=0.481>0.05), overall results from the Gates method tended to overestimate compared to those from the multiple blood sampling-dual exponential (MBSDE) method. When comparing averages between phases, results from Gates-2 were most similar to those from the MBSDE method. Moreover, paired t-test p-values between MBSDE method and phases were as follows Gates-1: 0.021 (p<0.05), Gates-2: 0.280 (p>0.05), and Gates-3: 0.164 (p>0.05) indicating that only Gates-1 had statistically significant differences compared with MBSDE method. Thus, setting ROI around 2~3 minutes is calculated can aid in accurately determining GFR when Gates Method.

  • Tribologicsl diagnostics as the ensemble of means and methods of continuous monitoring of the state of friction characteristics of moving junctions is playing an ever important part in the development of friction, lubrication, and wear theory end practice. The scheme presenting the main areas of tribological diagnostics is given in Fig. I. This growing part of TD is determined by the general tendency of modern technology, expressed in an attempt to organically combine the functions of measuring, evaluating, and predicting the parameters and characteristics of the processee taking place in the operating device. The logical result of this integration in future is the closed system correcting its operation in accordance with sn established program. Unfortunately, tribotechnicsl devices are still very far from such an ideal system at the present time. While in the friction assemblies with hydrodynamic lubrication it is possible in the first approximation to realize feed-backs in the lubricant circulation system with the aid of monitoring of the pressure, temperature and filtration, in the systems operating without lubrication and with boundary lubricetion even the process of selection of the diagnostic parameters has not been completed.

  • Microplastics have become a rising issue in due to its detection in oceans, rivers, and tap water. Although a large number of studies have been conducted on the detection and quantification in various water bodies, the number of research conducted on the removal and treatment of microplastics are still comparatively low. In the current research, the inflow and removal of microplastics were investigated for various drinking water treatment plants around the world. Addition to the investigation of filed research, a survey was also conducted on the current research trend on microplastic removal for different treatment processes in the drinking water treatment plants. This includes the researches conducted on coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation, dissolved air flotation, sand filtration and disinfection processes. The survey indicated mechanisms of microplastic removal in each process followed by the removal characteristics under various conditions. Limitations of current researches were also mentioned, regarding the gap between the laboratory experimental conditions and field conditions of drinking water treatment plants. We hope that the current review will aid in the understanding of current research needs in the field of microplastic removal in drinking water treatment.

  • Polyphenol oxidases (PPO) are copper-containing enzymes responsible for tissue browning in fruits and vegetables including potato, apple and pears. Although these enzymes have been studied for many years, their physiological roles in plants are not yet clear. Therefore, these enzymes need to be purified to characterize further from potato tubers. The classical methods used for the purification of PPO involve several steps. So in this study, we developed a one-step chromatography process for the potato tuber PPO purification. After removal of salts from dissolved ammonium sulfate precipitates of potato tuber extracts using Sephadex-G50 gel filtration, affinity chromatography was carried out on NHS-activated Sepharose 4B using p-aminobenzoic acid as a ligand. The purified enzyme was confirmed by silver staining and a zymogram. The optimum temperature and pH for the purified potato tuber PPO were $15^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0, respectively. The results obtained in the present study will aid to evaluate PPO from various fruits and vegetables.

  • The mechanism of radionuclide colloid transport in porous media was studied through modeling and experiment. A nondestructive column scanning system was developed to improve the traditional destructive core slicing method. With an aid of this system we could get much more results from one experiment. Neutron activated clay soaked with soluble isotopes was used as colloid suspension. Filtration coefficients obtained through the experiments show two families of colloids despite their size distribution. New modeling of polydispersed colloid transport was made with two lumped parameters. This new model simulates well. Among the soluble isotopes $^{l37}$Cs mowed mainly as a form of colloid, but $^{85}$ Sr did not.t.

  • The objective of this paper is to show an optimal design model for branched water supply system which also can find the optimal location of pumping stations using linear programming. GIS is utilized in this model to better handle the data and the results front the optimization. The developed model considers hydraulic influences of some appurtenances such as supply tunnels and a filtration plant The model also considers tunnel construction cost which should be treated differently from pipe construction cost Different from other models presently available, the model guarantees a nonnegative pressure at every junction node in the system. The objective function includes annual operation cost (electricity rate) ill addition to initial construction cost, thus producing a more reasonable decision. The model selects the optimal diameter not in the form of continuous number but in the form of commercial discrete diameter (pipe size) using the pipe lengths as decision variables instead of pipe diameters. The model not only determines the optimal pumping head for each pumping station but also finds the optimal location and number of pumping stations. GIS is used to handle hydraulic and budgetary data automatically and to visualize the results for the of optimal design of the system. The model has been applied to an existing water supply system. 'The results show that the optimization model with the aid of GIS is helpful in the decision-nulling process for the design of more economical systems, and can be dot into practice successfully.
