The effects of hydrogen peroxide treatment on the reduction of waterworks sludge were investigated in this study. Sludge treated by peroxidation $H_2O_2$ oxidation) was dewatered using a pressure filter at 3atm. It was observed that $H_2O_2$ treatment at the acidic condition significantly reduce both cake water content and specific resistance to filtration (SRF), indicating the enhancement of dewaterability and filterability. The filterability by hydrogen peroxide treatment at pH 3.5 was better than acidic treatment and became comparable with polymer conditioning. The sludge filterability evaluated by SRF was optimal at a dose 2ml $H_2O_2$/sludge($0.02g\;H_2O_2/gTS$) after adjusting of pH to 3.5. The $H_2O_2$ oxidation at pH 3.5 also produced even more dewatered cake when compared with polymer conditioning. The reduction rate of sludge mass at an optimal condition showed 34% compared with untreated sludge. The effects of peroxidation on sludge properties including zeta potential, bound water and particle size were also evaluated. Peroxidation at the acidic condition reduced both bound water and zeta potential. By $H_2O_2$ combined with sulfuric acid leached iron caused Fenton's reaction, which showed a potential to significantly reduce the amount of solids mass and to produce more compact cake with higher filterability.

This experimental investigation is concerned with the relationship between the electrical-on time of a solenoid which is located on the top of a pulse valve and air consumption of a dust collector. For the air consumption per pulse would be one of major factors affecting the operating cost of a dust collector, more attention is needed on the behaviour of a pulse valve. A pulse jet is blasted into a bag filter as the diaphragm valve opens and inflates a bag filter. This air-blast breaks up the dust layer and cleans the filter by dislodging dust cake. It is interpreted in this research that the cleaning filter is done by the impulse of a pulse jet. Hence, the magnitude and fluctuation of the dynamic pressure is measured using by a dynamic pressure sensor and the impulse is obtained by integrating dynamic pressure variation against time. Through this experimental work, conclusions are drawn implementing magnitude of averaged impulsive pressure per pulse or pressure impulse per unit volume of consumed air.

A two-phase anaerobic reactor with submerged membrane system was developed for increasing acidogen concentration and methane recovery. The membrane used was mixed esters of cellulose of $0.5{\mu}m$ pore size and $0.8m^2$ of effective surface area. The methanogenic reactor comprised of UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) and AF (Anaerobic Filter). COD removal efficiency was 70~80% and the methane content in the biogas increased up to 90% for the submerged membrane system in the anaerobic reactor. As the cake resistance of membrane caused a serious problem, stainless steal prefilters (40, 53, $63{\mu}m$) and air backwashing methods were applied to minimize the cake resistance effectively. Among the tested prefilters. the $63{\mu}m$ prefilter showed the best performance for reduction of cake resistance and a successful long-tern operation. By cleaning with alkali first and acidic solution later. the permeate flux decreased by long term operation was recovered to 89% of that with a new membrane.

The sludge disposal is a major economic factor in the sewage treatment facility operation. Moreover, since the ocean dumping will be prohibited by Korean environmental law from 2013, sludge should be eliminated or sludge volumetric reduction should be performed urgently. In this study, improvement of the sewage sludge dewaterability was investigated by ultrasound and electric field treatment. Sludge was treated by a single or in combination of either the electric field or ultrasound on a pilot pretreatment facility, then it was dewatered by lab-scale filter press. The operating input energy of ultrasound device was varied from 225~1,200 kJ/L and electric field device was varied from 4.5~24 kJ/L. The water contents of dewatered sludge cake treated with ultrasound (1,200 kJ/L) and combination of ultrasound/electric field (1,224 kJ/L) were decreased 10~12% by comparing non-treated sludge. At that time, water contents were 65~66%. The combination treatment of ultrasound/electric field was effective to reduce water content of dewatered sludge cake, however, water content was not changed by a single treatment of electric field because of low energy density.

As current international guideline and IMO regulation give severe restrictions for ships to manage ballast water to reduce unintentional organism transfers, several ballast water treatment systems recently have been being developed together with filtration. That is because discharging ballast water from ships causes many pollutions by foreign biological invasive species. The primary treatment system being considered in this study was based on fine screen filtration technology applied to ballast water filter in ballast tank in order to reduce the load of ballast water treatment system. New ballast water filtration system was invented and analysed. The structural stress and strain analysis for ballast filtration systems which are current and invented filters were carried out using UGS and Ansys. The results showed that the structure of current filtering module was not designed to meet the requirement of sea water filtration during ballasting operation. The studies also showed that the invented design of filtration system equipped with back washing and automatic scrapper for eliminating cake of bio-species might be a potentially effective technology for ballast water management of ship's ballast tank.

Application of electrodewatering (EDW) to mechanical dewatering system was studied to decrease water content in the sludge generated from waste water treatment process. Experiments realized the reduction of water content in the sewage sludge. EDW enhancing the conventional filtration by an electric field is an emerging technology with the potential to improve dewatering. In this study, a piston filter press was constructed, the digested sludges were dewatered by EDW under conditions of DC electric field and constant pressure in the piston filter press. Constant electric field from $0{\sim}120\;V/cm$ and constant pressure $98.1{\sim}392.4\;kPa$ were used. The results showed that as electric field was increased the dewatering rates increased and as pressure was increased the dewatering rates decreased. Also as polymer was added the dewatering rates increased. This experiments produced final sludge cake with water content of 60 wt% using EDW, compared with 80 wt% using pressure filtration alone.
A laboratory-scale electrodewatering system for enhancing conventional filter pressure dewatering by an electric field has been developed to decrease the water content of sludge generated in the wastewater treatment. It consists of a piston-typed filter press, a power supply and data acquisition system. The offset of electrodewatering is investigated as a function of applied pressure, applied voltage, sludge type and filtration time. Also the optimal conditions for maximizing the dewatering efficiency in the eletrodewatering system are investigated. Electric field strength and mechanical pressure are in the range of from 0 to 120 V/cm and from 98.1 to 392.4 kPa. The dewatering rates increased with increasing electric strength. These experiments produced a final sludge cake with water content of 60 wt% using electrodewatering technology, compared with a 80 wt% using pressure filtration alone. The conventional filtration system using the electrodewatering shows the potential to be effective method for improving dewatering Sludge.
The dewaterability of a sludge can be characterized by two ways: the residual moisture content in the sludge cake after dewatering process, and the filtration of the sludge. Time to filter (TTF) represents filtration processes that are special cases of the flow through a solid matrix concept. TTF characterizes a resistance to filtration. The sludge resistance, in turn, can be subdivided into resistances associated with the solid phase and the liquid phase to evaluate the effect of each of the two phases on sludge dewaterability. In order to determine the dewatering characteristics of the water sludge samples, TTF and zeta potential were measured. For these studies cationic polymer was chosen for water sludge dewatering experiments. The zeta potential of thickener sludges neared from minus values to zero values till 4 days after sampling. The dewaterability of thickener sludges using cationic polymer was deteriorated according to the increase of detention time. As the detention time was increased from 4 to 10 days, the optimal dose of the polymer was increased from 4 to 8mg/L. Therefore, the optimal detention time plays an important part for the dewaterability of a sludge.
This study evaluated the dewatering efficiency of inorganic dehydrating agents that contain oyster shells. A filter press dehydrator was used for this study. The experiments were performed by the single injection of calcium-based chemicals, the single injection of oyster shells, and the mixed injection of oyster shells and calcium-based chemicals. The moisture content of the dewatered cake generated after dehydration confirmed that the best dewatering efficiency was found at the mixing ratios of CaCO3 to sludge, oyster shell to sludge, and inorganic dehydrating agent to sludge of 3:1, 10:1, and 1.5:2.5:1, respectively. The moisture contents exhibited less than 58% when the injection mixing ratio of inorganic dehydrating agent to sludge was 1.5:2.5:1. From EPS, SEM, and EDX analysis, it was found that the calcium adsorbed on the sludge surface could reduce extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and enhanced the dewaterbility. Based on the above results, it is considered possible to apply inorganic dehydrating agents containing recycled oyster shells in sludge dewatering in order to reduce sludge.
Typical size distribution of emission particulates is bi-modal in shape with particles in the fine mode (< 2.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and the coarse mode. An experimental study of pressure drop across the industrial gas cleaning filters has been conducted using particle mixture of fine alumina and coarse Arizona dusts with a rotating aerosol disperser to generate the bi-modal test aerosol. Pressure drop increased linearly with increasing mass loading. The pressure drop was found to be strongly dependent upon the mass ratio of fine to coarse particles. The smaller the mass ratio of fine to coarse particles and the higher face velocity are, the faster pressure drop rises. The fine particles and the greater inertia of the particle moving fast would cause a denser cake formation on the filter surface, resulting in a greater specific resistance to the gas flow.
