  • Chemical vapor condensation (CVC) reactor was investigated for the deposition of Parylene-N thin films as the passivation layer for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Several gas inlet manifold designs were tested to improve the deposition rate and its uniformity, and it was found that proper inlet design is crucial to get the desired film properties. Process characterization was also performed with the modified inlets to optimize the process variables.

  • The dependence of the node size in the condensation heat transfer coefficient for an inclined surface is eliminated and two correlations applicable for laminar and turbulent regimes are implemented in RELAP5/MOD3.1. The newly implemented correlations are used according to their applicable ranges of the film Reynolds numbers Reps which are calculated recursively to track the condensate film thickness along the condensation length. The modified version is compared with the original one through comparison with an analytical solution and the simulation of the Secondary Condensers (SC). It turns out that the simulation results by this modified version are independent of the node size and are better agreement with the analytical solution than those by the original one.

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of nonazeotropic refrigerant mixtures of HFC32/HFC 134a and HCFC123 at various compositions were measured on a horizontal smooth tube. All data were taken at the vapor temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling of 3~8K. Test results showed that HTCs of tested mixtures were 11.0~85.0% lowed than the ideal values calculated by the mass fraction weighting of the HTCs of the pure components. Thermal resistance due to the diffusion vapor film was partly responsible for the significant reduction of HTCs with these nonazeotropic mixtures. The measured data were compared against thc predicted ones by Colburn and Drew's film model and a good agreement was observed within a deviation of 15%.

  • An ozone condensation system is evaluated from the viewpoint of an ozone supplier fro oxide thin film growth. Ozone is condensed by the adsorption method and its concentration is analyzed using the thermal decomposition method, The concentration of ozone exceeds 90mol% and ozone is supplied for a sufficiently long time to grow oxide thin films. Investigation of the ozone decomposition rate demonstrates that ozone can be transferred into the film growth chamber without marked decomposition. The ozone concentration is also evaluated using a quardrupole mass analyzer and the accuracy of this method is compared with the results of the thermal decomposition method.

  • A theoretical model for film condensation of a vapor including a relatively lighter noncondensable gas on a horizontal tube has been formulated on the basis of the conservation laws and other fundamental physical principles. The model is applied to the prediction of the condensation heat transfer characteristics for the Freon vapor in the presence of air on a horizontal tube. Calculated results for the mean heat transfer coefficient, which is shown to depend strongly on the bulk concentration of air, are in good agreement with the available experimental results for a range of operating conditions. The distributions of physical quantities along the surface of tube are also calculated, such as the boundary layer thickness and local heat transfer coefficient. The present model is readily reduced to the Nusselt model as the bulk concentration of air decreases to zero. Therefore, the transition from the condensation of pure vapor to that of vapor-air mixture occurs continuously not abruptly.

  • Crack-free hard coating siIica films were prepared by sol-gel processfrom twokinds of silicon alkoxide (tetra-ethoxysilane and methyltrimethoxysilane) and two kinds of alcohol (methanol and isopropyl alcohol) with an acid catalyst, acetic acid. A silicate framework of the precursor solution was investigated by infrared spectros-copy (IR) in the process of hydrolysis and condensation. Theextent of the condensation in the intermediates was elucidated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and 29Si-NMR spectroscopy. The hard coating films werecharacterized by IR,scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and dif-ferential scanning calroimeter (DSC). The synthetic condition for the crack-free and transparent silica film for-mation was optimized interms of starting materials for the precursor solution as well as preparation method of the silica film.

  • Heat transfer performance improvement by fin and grooves is studied for condensation of R-11 on integral-fin tubes. Eight tubes with trapezoidal shaped integral-fins having fin densities from 748 to 1654 fpm and 10, 30 grooves are tested. A plain tube having the same diameter as the finned tubes is also tested for comparison. R-11 condenses at saturation state of $32^{\circ}C$ on the outside tube surface cooled by inside water flow. All of test data ate taken at steady state. Beatty and Katz's, Rudy's and Webb's theoretical models are used to predict the R-11 condensation coefficient of tubes having 748, 1024 and 1299 fpm. The predicted value by Betty and Katz's model is within 10% of experimental values in this study at fpm<1024 and Rudy's model predicted the experimental data at fpm>1024 within 15%. The tube having fin density of 1299 fpm and 30 grooves has the best overall heat transfer performance. This tube shows the overall heat transfer coefficient of 11500 $W/m^{2}K$,/TEX> at coolant velocity of 3.0m/s.

  • In this study, condensation tests were conducted on a vertically finned plate (fin height 1 mm, fin thickness 1 mm, fin spacing 1 mm) using R-113. Results showed that fins enhanced the condensation on a vertical plain surface as much as four times. Comparison with theoretical models revealed that the effect off surface tension should be included in the model. The effect of interruption plates was also investigated. The plates were not effective in enhancing the finned plate condensation. The reason may be attributed to the already thinned condensate film on the finned surface.
