Fatigue Resistance Improvement of Welded Joints by Bristle Roll-Brush Grinding

  • In the periodic repainting of steel bridges, often the steel surface has to be prepared by using power tools to remove surface contaminants, such as deteriorated paint film and rust, and to increase the adhesive strengths of the paint films to be applied newly. Surface preparation by bristle roll-brush grinding, which is a type of power tool, may additionally introduce compressive residual stress and increase the fatigue resistance of welded joints owing to the impact of rotating bristle tips. In this study, fatigue tests were conducted for longitudinally out-of-plane gusset fillet welded joints and transversely butt-welded joints to evaluate the effect of bristle roll-brush grinding prior to repainting on the fatigue resistance of the welded joints. The test results showed that bristle roll-brush grinding introduced compressive residual stress and significantly increased fatigue limits by over 50%.

  • In this study, fatigue tests to obtain S-N curves and FE analyses to obtain structural stress concentration factors were conducted for the two types of cruciform fillet welded joints, that is, load-carrying and non load-carrying types. Then we changed the obtained S-N curve of load carrying joint to that based on hot spot stress. As a result, the S-N curve of load carrying joint based on hot-spot stress was almost exactly coincided with that of non load-carrying joint based on nominal stress. So we have conducted that the fatigue strength of a welded joint with different geometry from the non stress distribution along the expected crack path.

  • 최근 고성능, 고강도 강재가 개발되어 강구조물에 많이 사용되고 있다. 새로 개발된 고강도 구조용 강재는 일반적인 강도의 강재에 비하여 인성, 용접성, 항복강도비 등이 다르므로 필릿용접부에 대해 기존 설계기준의 적용 타당성을 검토할 필요가 있다. 국내외의 설계기준에 따른 필릿용접부의 공칭강도 값을 비교한 결과 상당한 차이가 있음을 확인하였다. 필릿용접부 강도시험 결과를 수집 분석하였다. 필릿용접의 강도를 결정하는 주요변수로 모재의 항복강도와 인장강도, 그리고 용접금속의 인장강도를 각각 선택하여 강도 추정식을 도출하였다. 공칭강도 추정식을 사용하여 각 강종별로 구한 계산 값은, 선택한 주요변수의 종류와 관계없이 거의 동일한 것으로 나타났다. 필릿용접부의 거동특성과 설계의 실용성을 고려하여 모재의 인장강도를 기준으로 공칭강도를 산정하는 것이 좋을 것으로 판단된다. 제안된 공칭강도와 비교한 결과 기존의 설계기준에 따른 필릿용접부의 공칭강도는 낮은 강도의 강재에 대해서는 비경제적이고, 고강도 강재의 경우에는 적절한 안전성을 확보하지 못할 우려가 있다.

십자형 필릿 용접부에서의 무한 피로수명 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on Estimation of Infinite Fatigue Life in Cruciform Fillet Welded Joint)

  • 용접에 의한 가스설비, 교량, 선박 등 강 구조물의 접합 방법은 대부분 십자형이나 T형의 필릿 용접으로 이루어지며 구조물의 형상과 용도에 따라 완전 용입 또는 불완전 용입 상태로 이루어진다. 본 연구에서는 십자형 필릿용접 구조물에 대하여 재료 두께별 용입 깊이에 따른 피로 균열 특성을 파악하였고, 그 결과로부터 무한수명 영역내에서의 안전 설계응력에 대하여 고찰하였다. 미 용입 길이가 길면 루트 부 파괴가 되어 무한 수명 영역은 작고 미 용입 길이가 짧으면 토우부 파괴가 되어 무한 수명 영역은 크게 나타났다. 3층 용접한 재료 두께 20mm의 경우가 2층 용접한 재료 두께 10mm, 15mm의 경우보다 미세한 페라이트 침상 조직을 더 많게 형성시켜 노치 인성을 증가시키므로 서 피로강도와 무한 수명을 더 향상시킨 것으로 나타났다.

용접 후처리에 의한 필렛용접부의 피로강도 향상에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fatigue Strength Improvement of the Fillet Welded Connections with respect to Post-Weld Treatment)

  • 본 연구에서는 교량이나 선박 등의 강구조물에서 널리 사용되고 있는 하중 전달형 십자형 필렛용접 시험편에 대해 피로시험을 실시하여, 용접 후처리 조건에 따른 피로강도를 분석하였다. 용접 후처리 방법으로는 Toe Grinding, TIG Dressing 및 Weld Profiling을 적용하였으며, 피로시험은 일정진폭 반복하중 하에서 실시하였다. 피로시험 결과 하중 전달형 십자형 필렛용접 시험편은 용접 후처리를 실시한 경우와 실시하지 않은 경우 모두에서 BS 피로설계기준의 F등급을 만족하는 결과를 나타내었다. 또한 용접 후처리 방법에 따른 피로강도의 향상 효과는 Toe Grinding, TIG Dressing, Weld Profiling 순서로 증가하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • The objectives of this research are to establish the criteria of peel occurrence considering the shape of bond terminus and to compare the strength properties of some adhesive joints. The criteria of feel occurrence at the bond terminus was suggested. Peel loads of some adhesive joint(butt joint, T -shape specimen, single lap joint) were determined from tensile tests. Principal stress distributions of these joints were determined from finite element method analysis. Then, peel occurrence was estimated with intensity of stress singularity ' $K_{prin.}$' when the terminus shape was square, with average principal stress when the terminus shape was rounded. The conclusions are summarized as follows; (1) In the non-filleted model(e.g., butt joint, T-shape specimen), principal stress shows singularity at the bond terminus, intensity of stress(principal stress) singularity ' $K_{prin.}$&apso; can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus. (2) In the filleted model(e.g., single lap joint), principal stress doesn't show singularity at the bond terminus. Average principal stress can use as the criteria of peel occurrence at the bond terminus.'t show singularity at the bond terminus.   • Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structure material for the railroad cars and the commercial vehicles. These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. For fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet and plug and ring type joint, it is important to obtain optimum design parameter information on gas welded joints. In this paper, analysis approach for fatigue test using experimental design are evaluated optimum factor in gas welded joint type and geometrical parameters of materials. Using these results, that factors applied to fundamental information for fatigue design.

  • This study presents a new method to derive the constraint coefficient from the degree of angular deformation caused by welding, as measured experimentally by varying the shape of welded joints and the magnitude of constraints and from analysis results given by the elastic FEM method. The equivalent load was then calculated with this constraint coefficient. The validity of the numerical analysis involved in this new method was confirmed by its agreement with the experimental results. As for the effects of the constraints based on the shape of the welded joints in the case of Butt welding when the constraint coefficients are not considered, the deformed quantity produced by analysis is larger that produced by experiment and consequently is largely affected by the constraints. However, in the case of Fillet welding, the deformed quantity is seldom affected regardless of constraint coefficient considerations.
