Storage Class Memory(SCM), such as PRAM, FRAM and MRAM, are expected to be comparable to DRAM in terms of access speed and to Flash memory in terms of capacity in a near future. In this paper, assuming that not only the secondary storage (HDD or Flash memory) but also the primary memory (DRAM) will be replaced by SCM in the future computer systems, we propose an efficient file access framework for the SCM based computer systems. The proposed framework do not assign exclusive area in the SCM to the file system and uses various memory-related techniques, such as unified data access path, zero-copy data read using file mapping, copy-on-write, and multiple page pre-faulting for file management. Based on the preliminary experimental results, we could conclude that the proposed framework can be an efficient baseline for designing a new operating system for the SCM based computer systems.

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have led to an increase in the implementation of AI applications in mobile environments. However, due to the limited resources in mobile devices compared to desktops and servers, there is growing interest in research aimed at efficiently executing AI workloads on mobile platforms. While most studies focus on offloading to edge or cloud solutions to mitigate computing resource constraints, research on the characteristics of file I/O related to storage access in mobile settings remains underexplored. This paper analyzes file I/O traces generated during the execution of deep learning applications in mobile environments and investigates how they differ from traditional mobile workloads. We anticipate that the findings of this study will be utilized to design future smartphone system software more efficiently, considering the file access characteristics of deep learning.

Recently, digital crime is becoming more intelligent, and efficient digital forensic techniques are required to collect evidence for this. In the case of important files related to crime, a specific person may intentionally delete the file. In such a situation, data recovery is a very important procedure that can prove criminal charges. Although there are various methods to recover deleted files, we focuses on the recovery technique using HxD editor. When recovering a deleted file using the HxD editor, check the file structure and access the file data area through calculation. However, there is a possibility that errors such as arithmetic errors may occur when a file approach through calculation is used. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an algorithm that automatically calculates the header and footer of a file after checking the file signature in the root directory for efficient file recovery. If the algorithm proposed in this paper is used, it is expected that the error rate of arithmetic errors in the file recovery process can be reduced.
Lustre is a scalable, distributed file system, which is popular in the field of high-performance computing. Recently, the advent of SSD has enabled high-performance storage hardware, but software development requires further improvement. In this paper, we analyzed performance of the Lustre system using SSD via extensive experimentation. We compared performance of Lustre on SSDs and HDDs in terms of file read/write throughputs and metadata access latencies. Our experimental results showed that 1) SSDs improve metadata access performance due to fast random read/write access of SSD characteristics, and 2) SSD are benefited to a greater extent under multiple threads and large numbers of small sized files.

As the development of an information technique, gradually, mobile device is going to be miniaturized and operates at high speed. By such the requirements, the devices using a flash memory as a storage media are increasing. The flash memory consumes low power, is a small size, and has a fast access time like the main memory. But the flash memory must erase for recording and the erase cycle is limited. JFFS is a representative filesystem which reflects the characteristics of the flash memory. JFFS to be consisted of LSF structure, writes new data to the flash memory in sequential, which is not related to a file size. Mounting a filesystem or an error recovery is achieved through the sequential approach. Therefore, the mounting delay time is happened according to the file system size. This paper proposes a MJFFS to use a multi-checkpoint information to manage a mass flash file system efficiently. A MJFFS, which improves JFFS, divides a flash memory into the block for suitable to the block device, and stores file information of a checkpoint structure at fixed interval. Therefore mounting and error recovery processing reduce efficiently a number of filesystem access by collecting a smaller checkpoint information than capacity of actual files. A MJFFS will be suitable to a mobile device owing to accomplish fast mounting and error recovery using advantage of log foundation filesystem and overcoming defect of JFFS.

File systems and applications try to implement their own update protocols to guarantee data consistency, which is one of the most crucial aspects of computing systems. However, we found that the storage devices are substantially under-utilized when preserving data consistency because they generate massive storage write traffic with many disk cache flush operations and force-unit-access (FUA) commands. In this paper, we present DJFS (Delta-Journaling File System) that provides both a high level of performance and data consistency for different applications. We made three technical contributions to achieve our goal. First, to remove all storage accesses with disk cache flush operations and FUA commands, DJFS uses small-sized NVRAM for a file system journal. Second, to reduce the access latency and space requirements of NVRAM, DJFS attempts to journal compress the differences in the modified blocks. Finally, to relieve explicit checkpointing overhead, DJFS aggressively reflects the checkpoint transactions to file system area in the unit of the specified region. Our evaluation on TPC-C SQLite benchmark shows that, using our novel optimization schemes, DJFS outperforms Ext4 by up to 64.2 times with only 128 MB of NVRAM.
Emerging next-generation storage technologies such as non-volatile memory will help eliminate almost all of the storage latency that has plagued previous storage devices. In conventional storage systems, the latency of slow storage devices dominates access latency; hence, software efficiency is not critical. With low-latency storage, software costs can quickly dominate memory latency. Hence, researchers have proposed the memory mapped file I/O to avoid the software overhead. Mapping a file into the user memory space enables users to access the file directly. Therefore, it is possible to avoid the complicated I/O stack. This minimizes the number of user/kernel mode switchings. In addition, there is no data copy between kernel and user areas. Despite of the benefits in the memory mapped file I/O, its overhead still needs to be addressed, as the existing mechanism for the memory mapped file I/O is designed for slow block devices. In this paper, we identify the overheads of the memory mapped file I/O via experiments.

The boundary-based security system has the advantage of high operational efficiency and easy management of security solutions, and is suitable for denying external security threats. However, since it is operated on the premise of a trusted user, it is not suitable to deny security threats that occur from within. A zero trust access control model was proposed to solve this problem of the boundary-based security system. In the zero trust access control model, the security requirements for real-time security event monitoring must be satisfied. In this study, we propose a monitoring method for the most basic file access among real-time monitoring functions. The proposed monitoring method operates at the kernel level and has the advantage of fundamentally preventing monitoring evasion due to the user's file bypass access. However, this study focuses on the monitoring method, so additional research to extend it to the access control function should be continued.
In this paper, we propose a PC's self-monitoring system for protecting illegal outflow of important personal files, which are managed in the Windows environment PC. This paper is based on the idea that it should be a read (access) file operation in order to outflow files through the network. To compare the information (name, some content) obtained from all operations of the reading of the 'Windows File System Driver' and captured transmission packets of mini port of 'Windows NDIS (Network Driver Interface Specification) Driver', and, if two pieces of information match, this system will determine the transmission to user. In this paper, tentatively, we developed a function to gather file information about file read operation and developed a function for transmission packet capture. This demonstration implementation showed that the proposed process has validity and the proposed process verified that it does not significantly affect the PC's performance.
The evaluation AP embedded Linux board is implemented. The board is made of IBM 405 GP processor, PPCBoot-1.2.1 boot loader, Linux-2.4.21 kernel and root file system. The evaluation board has two flash memories, boot flash and application flash of size 512Kbyte and 16Mbyte, respectively. And it supports IEEE 802.11a which provide the maximum throughput of 54Mbps in the 5.2GHz frequency band. MTD(Memory Technology Device) and JFFS2(Journalling Flash File System version 2) technologies are adopted to optimally package the system software, boot loader, kernel and root file system. And in order to optimize root file system, busybox package and tiny login are used. Linux kernel and root file system is combined together with mkimage utility.
