We propose the hybrid network architecture of wired EtherCAT and wireless 802.15.4e. For performance evaluation, we use the reference model of inverse pendulum system. Through the performance evaluation on our testbed system, it is verified that our proposed system can be applied to industrial real-time control system.

  • A cluster tool for semiconductor manufacturing is an integrated device that consists of several single wafer processing modules and a wafer transport module based on a robot. The distributed module controllers are integrated by an inter-module communication network and coordinated by a centralized controller, called a cluster tool controller (CTC). Since the CTC monitors and coordinates the distributed complex module controllers for advanced process control, complex commuication messaging and services between the CTC and the module controllers are required. A SEMI standard, CTMC(Cluster Tool Module Communication), specifies application-level communication service requirements for inter-module communication. We propose the use of high-level fieldbuses, for instance. PROFIBUS-FMS, for implementing CTMC since the high-level fieldbuses are well suited for complex real-time distributed manufacturing control applications. We present a way of implementing CTMC using PROFIBUS-FMS as the communication enabler. We first propose improvements of a key object of CTMC for material transfer and the part transfer protocol to meet the functional requirements of modem advanced cluster tools. We also discuss mapping objects and services of CTMC to PROFIBUS-FMS communication objects and services. Finally, we explain how to implement the mappings.

  • This paper describes a message model based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language) to present real-time data from sensors and instruments at manufacturing processes for web service. HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is inadequate for describing real-time data from process control plants while it is suitable for displaying non-real-time multimedia data on web. For XML-based web service of process data, XML format for the data presentation was proposed after investigating data of various instruments at steel-making plants. Considering transmission delay inevitably caused from increased message length and processing delay from transformation of raw data into defined format, which was critical for operation of a real-time system, its performance was evaluated by simulation. In the simulation, we assumed two implementation models for conducting the transformation function. In one model, transformation was done at an SCC (Supervisory Control Computer) after receiving real-time data from instruments. In the other model, transformation had been carried out at instruments before the data were transmitted to the SCC. Various tests had been conducted under different conditions of offered loads and data lengths and their results were described.

  • This paper presents a Train Communication Network simulator (TCNS) that can be used to evaluate the performance of TCN. TCN was accepted as the standard of the protocol for the communication network in trains. We carry out some simulation tests using the TCNS to show practical uses of the simulator. Results of some simulation tests are also reported. This paper presents a Train Communication Network simulator(TCNS) that can be used to evaluate the performance of TCN. TCN was accepted as the standard of the protocol for the communication network in trains. TCN of fieldbus was adopted as international standardization IEC 61375 in 1999. It has been operating on G7 train in korea. This paper developed TCNS(Train Communication Network simulator) as a simulator for performance evaluation. We can verify TCNS for preventing many kinds of occurring problems between the devices in data-communication. This study was developed TCNS as a simulator for the performance evaluation. We analyzed correlation between token, transmission data per paket and transmission speed of bus, through the TCNS, also analyzed result according to error rate of TCN. We carry out some simulation tests using the TCNS to show practical uses of the simulator. Results of some simulation tests are also reported.

  • Web-based predictive maintenance (PM) utilizes Virtual Device Network (VDN). VDN inevitably the implementation of Distributed Monitoring and Control Networks (DMCN). In general, one needs to integrate fieldbus protocol and TCP/IP to realize DMCN over IP network or internet, which can be viewed as Virtual Device Network (VDN). Interoperability between devices and equipments is essential to enhance the quality and the performance of predictive maintenance (PM). This paper investigates the transmission characteristics of VDN and suggests a basic framework for web-based PM using DMCN over IP network.

  • As the smart factory progresses, the use of automation facilities and robots is increasing. Also, with the development of IT technology, the utilization of the system using voice recognition is also increasing. Voice recognition technology is a technology that stands out in smart home and various IoT technologies, but it is difficult to apply to factories due to the specificity of factories. Therefore, in this study, a method to control an industrial articulated robot was designed using voice recognition technology that considers the situation at the manufacturing site. It was confirmed that the robot could be controlled through network protocol and command conversion after receiving voice commands for robot operation through mobile.

  • A compact ANSI/EIA 709.1 protocol analyzer system suited for maintenance of LonWorks network for safety management of underground facilities was developed and tested. The hardware is based on the TMS320LF2406A embedded system, and the software was designed using Visual C++6.0 under Windows XP environment. Connected to the LonWorks network the developed protocol analyzer decodes the raw packets and pass them to the master PC through USB port. Then on the PC the packets are processed and analyzed in various aspects and the key features that are essential to the maintenance of LonWorks network installed at underground facilities are displayed in a user-friendly format. Performance of the developed protocol analyzer was evaluated through a series of experiments, by measuring the speed of packet analysis and the error rate. The protocol analyzer proved to work reliably even under the increased bandwidth. However, more comprehensive tests under various underground environmental conditions are desired.

  • This paper addresses the design and implementation of an Android application for real-time precise motion control. To provide stable real-time performance, we implemented the application in two parts: Android service in the form of a daemon process, which periodically transfers a set of position commands for all motors through a real-time fieldbus, and Android UI application, which generates and delivers the set of position commands to the Android service. To support such a real-time motion control application, we use multi-core partitioning, which partitions the processor cores into a real-time partition to be used by the real-time motion control service and a non-real-time partition to be used by the Android application, and set up a shared buffer between them for communication. Our experiments show that we can obtain a motion control period of 2 ms with 99% task activation jitters less than ${\pm}55{\mu}s$ for a configuration where each of the four threads controls two motors in a group.

  • This paper proposes the design of a closed-loop stepping motor drive for real-time Ethernet (RTE), which can be easily applied to a variety of RTE protocols. The proposed design is divided into a closed-loop step motor drive which can be reused for various types of RTE protocol and RTE module developed for each specific RTE protocol. It is based on a layered architecture so that the motion control algorithm can be easily reused independently of the RTE protocol and motion profile. To verify the proposed design, closed-loop motor drives based on EtherCAT and Mechatrolink III were developed and their performances were evaluated. Cycle time was measured to verify the real-time communication performance of the developed EtherCAT and Mechatrolink III based motor drive. As a result, the EtherCAT was 7.5 times faster than the Mechatrolink III when 32 motor drives were connected.

  • In order to provide real-time data from sensors and instruments at manufacturing processes on web, we proposed a communication service model based on XML(eXtensible Markup Language). HTML(Hyper Text Markup Language) is inadequate for describing real-time data from manufacturing plants while it is suitable for display of non-real-time multimedia data on web. For applying XML-based web service of process data in Intranet environment, real-time performance of communication services was evaluated to provide the system design criteria. XML schema for the data presentation was proposed and its communication performance was evaluated by simulation in terms of transmission delay due to increased message length and processing delay for transformation of raw data into defined format. For transformation of raw data into XML format, we proposed two structures: one is the scheme where transformation is done at an SCC(Supervisory Control Computer) after receiving real-time data from instruments. the other is the scheme where transformation is carried out at instruments before the data are transmitted to the SCC. Performances of two structures were evaluated on a testbed under various conditions such as six packet sizes and offered loads of 20%, 50% and 80%, respectively. Test results show that proposed schemes are applicable to the systems in Ethernet 100BaseT network if total message traffic is less than 7 Mbps.
