  • I summarize highlights from extragalactic research activities performed with AKARI infrared space telescope. The main emphasis will be given to the works carried out by Korean astronomers. The activities span a wide range of topics, such as MIR properties of nearby galaxies in cluster environment, MIR diagnosis of star-forming galaxies at z=0 through z=2 in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) survey field, the Extended Groth Strip (EGS), and the First Look Survey (FLS) field, and the NIR spectroscopy of Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) and Active Galactic Nuclei/Super-massive Black Holes at low redshift as well as near the re-ionization epoch of z~6. I describe FIR and MIR all sky data which can be used as a precious resource for extragalactic research, and other future and ongoing works with AKARI. These AKARI results will form a strong basis for future studies using other facilities, such as infrared surveys with UKIRT, FIR study of dusty universe with Herschel, and the SPICA mission.

  • Construction equipment noise has caused much annoyance for a number of dwellers in nearby construction field and has become a very serious issure in our living environment. Therefore, in our country, a practical solution and a better method of reducing construction equipment noise are highly required in construction field. Practical solutions for the construction equipment noise, however, are very difficult because of the poorness of basic data and insufficiency of the existing research. Especially, in order to establish the sound insulation plan about pilling works noise with high sound pressure level and impactive, a real situation of sound characteristics about the noise of pilling works in foundation work demands more detail investigation. In this point, this study attempts to survey the characteristics of attenuation and propagation of construction equipment noise in pilling work using SIP(soil-cement injected precast pile) method with casing. And this study intends to get the basic data for establishment of a standard about construction noise.

  • Open-top field chamber study was carried out to investigate effect of ambient ozone level on the yield of rice cultivar 'Dongjin' in Kwangyang area located in the vicinity of the industrial complex of Yechon petrolium refinery and chemical works or Kwangyang Iron and Steel works during the summer of 1997. mean ozone concentration of ambient air during daytime (9:00∼17:00) was revealed to exceed over 40 ppb which is defined to be a critical level causing plant injury and yield reduction in Europe. Yield component analysis showed that there was no significant difference in rice yield between ambient air and charcoal-filtered air. The results suggest that the ambient ozone levels during the exposure period had no effect on yield reduction of rice cultivar 'Dongjin' and it is likely that the cultivar is tolerant to ambient ozone levels.

  • The construction industry kept lower level of the technology and productivity improvement than any other kinds of industry. But in most analysis of previous construction work which promoted the productivity of construction, the analysis process has only developed by the economical efficiency or the time studies through work sampling in construction field, So We suggest motion analysis as a tool to solve these problems. Spacially, this study find out productivity improvement method of steel frame fabrication works with using motion analysis. If the result of this study were to be applied to the actual construction field, it will be of great help for Building Construction Automation.

  • In this paper several recent case studies of near surface geophysical applications in Greece are presented. The case studies are focused mostly in archeological site investigation, a field which is of high interest in Greece due to its reach historical heritage. The growing construction works in several parts of Greece as well as the increasing public interest in exploring and preserving cultural heritage lead to an increase of the application of nearsurface geophysics techniques as a preliminary investigation tool prior to engineering and archeological excavation works. Research efforts, presented in this work, are focused to extending and adapting standard nearsurface techniques in order to be made more effective for archaeological site investigation. The presented case studies involve not only standard field investigation procedures but also novel approaches such as the use of non-spike electrodes, efficient measuring and instrumentation strategies, unusual configurations and measurement environments. Overall it shown that efficient and state-of-art nearsurface geophysical techniques used for archaeological prospection purposes provide significant archaeological and structural information valuable for archeologists, engineers and conservation scientists.

  • Recent work by Ravanbakhsh et al. (2017), Mathuriya et al. (2018) showed that convolutional neural networks (CNN) can be trained to predict cosmological parameters from the visual shape of the large scale structure, i.e. the filaments, clusters and voids of the cosmic density field. These preliminary works used the dark matter density field at redshift zero. We build upon these works by considering realistic mock galaxy catalogues that mimic true observations. We construct light-cones that span the redshift range appropriate for current and near future cosmological surveys such as LSST, EUCLID, WFIRST etc. In summary, we propose a novel multi-image input CNN to track the evolution in the morphology of large scale structures over cosmic time to constrain cosmology and the expansion history of the Universe.

  • Light Field (LF) cameras capture both spatial and directional information of light rays. Current LF cameras have a problem of a low spatial resolution. There have been lots of existing works carried out to improve the resolution of LF images. In this paper, those existing works will be divided into two categories: hardware-based approaches and software-based approaches, and we will look into and compare several experiment results in order for LF spatial resolution enhancement. Finally, the direction for the future spatial resolution enhancement will be suggested.

  • The primary purpose of dredging work is to maintain navigational readiness and to increase environmental amenity. Therefore the dredging project, which is composed of excavating, removing, transporting and storing or dumping dredged material, must be carefully managed to insure that dredging works are completed in a cost-effective and environmentally safe method. The most important point in dumping operations is evaluating and decreasing the impacts of dumping works at the dumping area. One of the most effective method for this purpose is using the schematic process composed of the sophisticate plan, precise work and predicting/reducing the impacts based on an numerical model being closely linked with field observation. In this study, a numerical model is used to predict the spatial transport and fate of the effluent discharged from the confined dumping facility(CDF) located at a coastal area. To achive this purpose, numerical models were used for reappearing the tidal current of concerned area. These models were then applied to Mokpo harbpr where capital dredging and maintenance dredging are being conducted simultaneously and the CDF is under construction. In series of model case study, we found that the effluent discharged from CDF was governed by the receiving water condition and outfall geometry, so that limit of near-field was 14∼500 meter down stream and 4∼150 meter in transverse direction. dilution ranged from 1.1 to 8.2 on the cases. Long-term diffusion characteristics was governed by the dilution rate during near-field behavior, ambient conditions and CDF operation modes.
