The Field Velocity Probe (FVP) has been widely applied to determine the various characteristics of soils. This study seeks to estimate soil consolidation characteristics using an FVP and to increase its application in the field. The specimens were extracted from depths of 3 and 6 m at the study site, an area of soft clay in Incheon. In laboratory testing, the specimens were placed in an improved oedometer cell to measure shear wave velocity, and statistical analysis was performed to compare the results of effective stress and shear wave velocity. FVP enables increased resolution in the field because it measures the shear wave velocity every 20 cm. To estimate the condition of consolidation, we compared the results of shear wave velocities between those obtained in the laboratory and those in the field. The field conditions are used to analyze overconsolidated and normally consolidated soils at depths of 3 and 6 m, respectively. The results show that FVP is a suitable method for estimating the degree of consolidation.
A field velocity resistivity probe (FVRP) can measure compressional waves, shear waves and electrical resistivity in boreholes. The objective of this study is to perform the soil classification through a machine learning technique through elastic wave velocity and electrical resistivity measured by FVRP. Field and laboratory tests are performed, and the measured values are used as input variables to classify silt sand, sand, silty clay, and clay-sand mixture layers. The accuracy of k-nearest neighbors (KNN), naive Bayes (NB), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM), selected to perform classification and optimize the hyperparameters, is evaluated. The accuracies are calculated as 0.76, 0.91, 0.94, and 0.88 for KNN, NB, RF, and SVM algorithms, respectively. To increase the amount of data at each soil layer, the synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) and conditional tabular generative adversarial network (CTGAN) are applied to overcome imbalance in the dataset. The CTGAN provides improved accuracy in the KNN, NB, RF and SVM algorithms. The results demonstrate that the measured values by FVRP can classify soil layers through three kinds of data with machine learning algorithms.

In the field of experimental fluid dynamics, the 5-hole probe is one of the most widely used tools to measure flow velocity and pressure. We hereby describe the development of an inexpensive laboratory-based flow calibration system for 5-hole probes. The system is applied to a custom L-shaped probe, and the probe performance is compared against a standard commercial probe in a custom wind tunnel. The setup allows rotation of the probe around the yaw and pitch axes. Static and total pressure values are calculated, and then calibration maps are constructed based on the yaw and pitch angles. Using these maps, errors of the custom probe are found to be ±5% for velocity magnitude and ±3° for direction, compared to the commercial probe, when both pitch and yaw angles are within 40°.
In ECR and helicon reactors for plasma processing, a high density plasma is generated in a source region which is connected to a diffusion region where the processing takes place. Large density and potential gradients can develop at the orifice of the source which drive ion currents into the diffusion region. The average ion velocity may become the order of the sound velocity. Measurements of the ion saturation current to a Langmuir probe are used as a standard method of determining the plasma density in laboratory discharges. However, the analysis becomes difficult in a steaming plasma. We have used the HAMLET plasma simulator to simulate the ion flow to a large langmuir probe in an ECR plasma. The collection surface was aligned with the Held upstream, normal to the field, and downstream. ion trajectories through the electric and magnetic fields were calculated including ion-neutral collisions. We examines the ratio of ion current density to plasma density as a function of magnetic field and pressure.

A triple hot-wire probe has an essential potentiality for the measure- ment of an instantaneous velocity vector in a three dimensional unsteady flow with large amplitude of velocity fluctuations, the key problems asso- ciated with this instrument are the directional range of applicability and the accuracy. This present paper is concerned with a new method of the techniques of calibration and data processing to estimate the three dimensional flow field using an arbitrary shaped triple hot-wire probe. The method is not based on the assumptions of orthogonality or symmetry and it is especially useful for applications to a hand-made probe where probe geometry is not accurately known. The test application is made to evaluate the effect of cone angles of symmetric non-orthogonal probe.

In order to investigate spray characteristics of gas-centered swirl coaxial injectors, a phase detection optical probe is employed to obtain the spatial evolution of the drop size and velocity. From the study on the optical probe responses under various impact angles, it is demonstrated that the drop size and velocity can be measured with an uncertainty less than 15% when the probe axis remains within about ${\pm}15^{\circ}$ of the drop velocity direction. This typical uncertainty is in good agreement with a previous study. It is also shown that the drop sizes measured by the optical probe are in accord with those evaluated by image processing techniques. Finally, the experiments with the optical probe are performed in dense sprays, as it were, in the near field of gas-centered swirl coaxial injectors. Some experimental results are presented and discussed to be of help to understanding of spray characteristics of the injectors.

Velocity data were acquired at a series of stations in the chordwise direction above a delta wing with leading edge extension, using a triple axis hot film anemometry. Surveys normal to planform yield velocity field data at incidence angle of 24$^{\circ}$and 32$^{\circ}$at a centerline chord Reynolds number of $1.76{\times}10^6$. Experimental results of velocity measurements of mean velocity of three components gave a confidence to quantitative investigate the vortical flow field over a LEX-delta wing with this probe. The present experiments indicated the existence of both wing and LEX vortex where the local mean axial velocity is maximum. It also shown the development of secondary vortex of opposite sign of rotating above the wing surface near the leading edge. The insertion of probe across the flow field was found to have little influence on the position of the vortex core.

Experimental investigations of the flow structure and heat transfer enhancement in a channel with a built-in circular cylinder and a wing-let type vortex generator are presented. Without any vortex generators, relatively low heat transfer takes place in the downstream of the circular cylinder where is a recirculation region with low velocity fluid is formed. However with a wing-let type longitudinal vortex generator in the wake region behind the cylinder, heat transfer in the region can be enhanced. In order to control the strength of longitudinal vortices, the angle of attack of the vortex generators is varied from $20^{circ} to 45^{\circ}$, but spacings between the vortex generations are fixed to be 5 mm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity field downstream of the vortex generator is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. The vorticity field and streamwise velocity contour are obtained from the velocity field. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the experimental cases($\beta=20^{circ}, 30^{circ} and 45^{\circ}$). Circulation strength and heat transfer coefficient have the maximum values when the angle of attack($\beta$) is $30^{\circ}$.

The reliability issue of the probe tip/recording media interface is one of the most crucial concerns in the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)-based recording technology. In this work, the tribological characteristics of the probe/media interface were investigated by performing wear tests using an AFM. The ranges of applied normal load and sliding velocity for the wear test were 10 to 50nN and 2 to 20$\mu$m/s respectively. The damage of the probe tip was quantitatively as well as qualitatively characterized by Field Emission Scanning Probe Microscope (FESEM) analysis and calculated based on Archard s wear equation. It was shown that the wear coefficient of the probe tip was in the order of 10$^{-4}$ ~ 10$^{-3}$ , and significant contamination at the end of the probe tip was observed. Thus in order to implement the AFM-based recording technology, tribological optimization of the probe/media interface must be achieved.

This paper investigated the new calibration algorithm of a straight-type five-hole pressure probe for measuring three-dimensional flow velocity components. This new calibration algorithm was used for velocity data reduction from the calibration map and based on the combination of a look-up, a binary search algorithm and a geometry transformation including the translation and reflection of nodes in a calibration map. The calibration map was expanded up to the application angle, ${\pm}55^{\circ}$ of a probe. This velocity data reduction method showed a perfect performance without any kind of interpolating errors in calculating yaw and pitch angles from the calibration map. Moreover, when it was applied to an actual flow field including a swirling flow, a good result came out on the whole.
