Growth Performance and Behaviour in Grouped Pigs Fed Fibrous Diet

  • The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of feeding fibrous diets on growth performance and occurrence of aggressive behaviours in growing pigs. Sixty healthy castrated pigs (initial body weight: $46.7{\pm}4.35$ kg) were used. A basal diet was diluted with maize cobs to two levels (0 and 160 g/kg dry matter). Behavioural activities were observed using video cameras for three weeks, 8 h/d starting at 0800 h. Pigs subjected to control diet gained more weight compared to pigs receiving fibrous diet in week 1 (0.47 vs 0.15 kg, respectively) and 2 (1.37 vs 1.04, respectively) (p<0.05). Average daily gain was not affected by treatment diet in the third week. Pigs on high fibrous spent more time eating, lying down, standing, walking and fighting (p<0.05) compared to pigs on control diet. Time spent eating increased as the weeks progressed whilst time spent lying down decreased. Time of day had an effect on time spent on different behavioural activities exhibited by all pigs on different treatment diet (p<0.05). Inactivity was greatest in 5th (1200 to 1300 h) hour of the day for all the pigs on different dietary treatments. Skin lesions appeared the most on neck and shoulder region followed by chest, stomach and hind leg region, and finally head region (p<0.05). Pigs on high fibre diet had more skin lesions in all body regions compared to pigs on control diet (p<0.05). It can be concluded that the high fibrous diet with maize cobs did not affect growth performance and also did not reduce aggressive behaviours. Aggressive behaviours emanated out of frustration when queuing on the feeder. The findings of this study suggest that maize cobs can be included at a level of 160 g/kg in diets of pigs. However, to reduce the level of aggression more feeding space should be provided.

  • Fibrous dysplasia is an idiopathic skeletal disorder in which medullary bone is replaced and disturbed by poorly organized, structually unsound fibroosseous tissue, which may produce cortical expansion. When facial bones are involed, considerable esthetic deformity may result. The term monostotic fibrous dysplasia has been applied when one bone is involved : when more than one bone is affected, the term polyostotic used. The polyostotic form may be accomplished by pigmented skin lesion (Jaffe type), or by pigmented skin lesions with endocrine disturbance (Albright syndrome). No general agreement exists on the cause of fibrous dysplasia. A few authors have suggested that fibrous dysplasia arises as a resujlt of trauma. It occurs predominantly in infant, adolescent females and runs a variable clinical course. When several bones are involed, it tends to be unilateral. Involements of alveolar bone may produce displacement of teeth with malocclusion, or loss of teeth, or both. Radiographycally, it shows an indistinctly delimited osteolytic defect with a bubble - like pattern, but without a sclerotic rim. The preferred treatment is almost always surgery. If the lesion is extensive, surgical intervention with use of recontouring procedures aimed at the correction of esthetic or funtional disturbances is preferred treatment. Now, we present a case of fibrous dysplasia on the left maxilla and the zygoma treated by bony contourign via hemicoronal flap and intraoral approach with good results.

FEM-based modelling of stabilized fibrous peat by end-bearing cement deep mixing columns

  • This study aims to simulate the stabilization process of fibrous peat samples using end-bearing Cement Deep Mixing (CDM) columns by three area improvement ratios of 13.1% (TS-2), 19.6% (TS-3) and 26.2% (TS-3). It also focuses on the determination of approximate stress distribution between CDM columns and untreated fibrous peat soil. First, fibrous peat samples were mechanically stabilized using CDM columns of different area improvement ratio. Further, the ultimate bearing capacity of a rectangular foundation rested on the stabilized peat was calculated in stress-controlled condition. Then, this process was simulated via a FEM-based model using Plaxis 3-D foundation and the numerical modelling results were compared with experimental findings. In the numerical modelling stage, the behaviour of fibrous peat was simulated based on hardening soil (HS) model and Mohr-Coulomb (MC) model, while embedded pile element was utilized for CDM columns. The results indicated that in case of untreated peat HS model could predict the behaviour of fibrous peat better than MC model. The comparison between experimental and numerical investigations showed that the stress distribution between soil (S) and CDM columns (C) were 81%C-19%S (TS-2), 83%C-17%S (TS-3) and 89%C-11%S (TS-4), respectively. This implies that when the area improvement ratio is increased, the share of the CDM columns from final load was increased. Finally, the calculated bearing capacity factors were compared with results on the account of empirical design methods.

Midfacial degloving approach for management of the maxillary fibrous dysplasia: a case report

  • Background: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a benign bone lesion characterized by the progressive replacement of normal bone with fibro-osseous connective tissue. The maxilla is the most commonly affected area of facial bone, resulting in facial asymmetry and functional disorders. Surgery is an effective management option and involves removing the diseased bone via an intraoral approach: conservative bone shaving or radical excision and reconstruction. Case presentation: This case report describes a monostotic fibrous dysplasia in which the patient's right midface had a prominent appearance. The asymmetric maxillary area was surgically recontoured via the midfacial degloving approach under general anesthesia. Follow-up photography and radiographic imaging after surgery showed the structures were in a stable state without recurrence of the FD lesion. Furthermore, there were no visible scars or functional disability, and the patient reported no postoperative discomfort. Conclusions: In conclusion, the midfacial degloving approach for treatment of maxillary fibrous dysplasia is a reliable and successful treatment option. Without visible scars and virtually free of postoperative functional disability, this approach offers good exposure of the middle third of the face for treatment of maxillary fibrous dysplasia with excellent cosmetic outcomes.

모델링/시뮬레이션 기법을 이용한 세라믹 섬유 단열재의 열전도도 해석 I (An Analysis of Thermal Conductivity of Ceramic Fibrous Insulator by Modeling & Simulation Method I)

  • 시뮬레이션/모델링 기법을 이용하여 세라믹 섬유단열재의 열전도도를 분석하였으며, 열전도도를 예측할 수 있는 프로그램을 개발하였다. 세라믹 섬유 단열재는 $1600^{\circ}$까지 사용할 수 있는 고온용 단열재로써 극심한 공력가열 환경에 노출되는 고속 항공기 및 유도무기에 적용 가능한 재료이다. 섬유 단열재의 열전도도는 전도 열전달 및 복사 열전달에 의해 결정되므로 각각의 메카니즘에 의한 열전도도를 계산하였다. 전도 열전달은 균질화 기법을 이용하였으며, 복사 열전달은 무작위 수(random number)를 이용하여 계산하였다. 특히 복사 가능 거리 및 확률을 도입함으로써 실험 상수(experimental constant) 없이 복사 열전도도를 계산할 수 있었다. 본 논문 연구 방법으로 계산된 섬유 단열재의 열전도도는 실험값에 대하여 평균 93%의 신뢰도를 나타내었다. 또 본 논문에서 개발한 열전도도 계산프로그램은 섬유와 공기의 열적 특성만으로 계산이 가능하므로, 섬유 단열재와 유사한 내부조직을 갖는 대부분의 복합재료에 적용할 수 있다.

구강점막에 발생한 섬유성 과증식의 처치 (MANAGEMENT OF FIBROUS HYPERPLASIA IN ORAL MUCOSA)

  • 구강점막은 흡입되거나 압력을 받아, 병적이진 않으나 임상적으로 뚜렷한 변화를 일으키는 수많은 상황에 놓이게 된다. 협점막과 혀는 치아가 상실되었거나 여분의 공간이 존재하는 부위에서 돌기가 형성될 수 있다. 점막이 여분의 공간으로 압력을 받거나 흡입되어 섬유성 과증식이 발생하게 되는 것이다. 이번 증례보고에서는 구강점막의 섬유성 과증식의 처치에 대해 기술하고자 한다. 섬유성 과증식은 구강점막에 가해진 습관성 압력이나 흡입에 의해 형성될 수 있다. 섬유성 과증식의 치료는 단순 절제술과 원인을 제거하는 것이다. 또한 습관 조절이 재발을 방지하기 위한 중요한 요소가 된다.

Computer modeling of elastoplastic stress state of fibrous composites with hole

  • The paper represents computer modeling of the deformed state of physically nonlinear transversally isotropic bodies with hole. In order to describe the anisotropy of the mechanical properties of transversally-isotropic materials a structurally phenomenological model has been used. This model allows representing the initial material in the form of the coupled isotropic materials: the basic material (binder) considered from the positions of continuum mechanics and the fiber material oriented along the anisotropy direction of the original material. It is assumed that the fibers perceive only the axial tensile-compression forces and are deformed together with the base material. To solve the problems of the theory of plasticity, simplified theories of small elastoplastic deformation have been used for a transversely-isotropic body, developed by B.E. Pobedrya. A simplified theory allows applying the theory of small elastoplastic deformations to solve specific applied problems, since in this case the fibrous medium is replaced by an equivalent transversely isotropic medium with effective mechanical parameters. The essence of simplification is that with simple stretching of composite in direction of the transversal isotropy axis and in direction perpendicular to it, plastic deformations do not arise. As a result, the intensity of stresses and deformations both along the principal axis of the transversal isotropy and along the perpendicular plane of isotropy is determined separately. The representation of the fibrous composite in the form of a homogeneous anisotropic material with effective mechanical parameters allows for a sufficiently accurate calculation of stresses and strains. The calculation is carried out under different loading conditions, keeping in mind that both sizes characterizing the fibrous material fiber thickness and the gap between the fibers-are several orders smaller than the radius of the hole. Based on the simplified theory and the finite element method, a computer model of nonlinear deformation of fibrous composites is constructed. For carrying out computational experiments, a specialized software package was developed. The effect of hole configuration on the distribution of deformation and stress fields in the vicinity of concentrators was investigated.

전방 십자 인대 재건술후 2차 관절경 검사 소견 - 이식건 주위의 변화 - (Second-look Arthroscopic Findings after ACL Reconstruction - The Changes around Graft -)

  • 목적 : 전방십자인대 재건술후 시행한2차 관절경 소견을 통하여 이식건 주위의 반흔 조직의 형태와 그 의미를 알아보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법 : 1997년 11월부터 1999년 6월 사이에 본원에서 전방십자인대 재건술을 받고 2차 관절경 검사를 시행한 환자중 임상적 증상이 없는 14명 15예를 대상으로 하였다. 이학적 검사 및 단순 측면 방사선 검사 상 터널의 위치를 측정하였는데 경골 터널은 경골 고평부 전-후방 길이에서 터널 위치를 백분율로 표시하였고 대퇴골 터널은 Blumensaal선 전-후방 길이에서 터널 위치를 백분율로 표시하였다. 2차 관절경 검사에서 이식건 주위의 변화를 관찰하였다. 결과 : 단순 방사선 측면 사진 상 경골 터널의 위치는 $27\%$에서 $58\%$로 평균 $41\%$였으며 대퇴 골 터널의 위치는 $58\%$에서 $83\%$로 평균 $76\%$로 모든 예에서 이상적으로 위치하였으며 관절경 소견상 모든 예에서 이식건 감입 현상은 없었으며 3예를 제외한 대부분의 예에서 대퇴과간 절흔과 이식건 사이 혹은 이식건 주위에 섬유성 반흔 조직 형성을 하였는데 그 형태로는 세동성 섬유(fibrillated fiber)가 6예, 섬유성 결절(fibrous nodule)이 5예, 섬유성 띠 (fibrous band)가 1예 있었다. 결론 : 전방십자인대 재건술후 이식건의 감입 현상 없어도 이식건 주위에 섬유조직의 형성이 다양하게 나타날 수 있다.
