  • Sixteen clinically healthy New Zealand white rabbits of either sex were divided into two equal groups I and II of 8 animals each. Under thiopental sodium (2.5%) anaesthesia a linear full thickness abdominal wall defect of 3 cm in length was created and repaired with continuous suture pattern using 3000 filaments of carbon fibres and 1~0 black braided nylon suture, ingroup I and II respectively. Increased vascularity was observed in carbon fibres (group I) and on day 30 the carbon fibres were covered by white fibrous tissue. Significantly higher (P < 0.05) values of glucose was seen on day 14 in group I, whereas, decrease in glucose value was observed in group II. Histopathologically, the carbon fiber implant induced extensive fibrous tissue (collagen fiber) reaction. Negligible inflammatory cells in the stroma indicate the host tissue tolerance to carbon fibers. Histochemically, gradually increased alkaline phosphatase activity up to day 14 in group I, suggested the proliferation of fibroblasts in early stages.

  • This work performed to analyses the impact of hooked end steel fibres on the mechanical properties of high performance concrete. The mechanical properties considered incorporate compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength. Taking in to thought parameters, such as, volume fraction of fibres, fibre aspect ratio and grade of concrete, a logical strategy called Taguchi technique was utilized to discover the ideal blend of factors. L9 Orthogonal Array (OA) of Taguchi network comprising of three variables and three dimensions is utilized in this work. The evaluations of concrete considered were M60, M80 and M100. M60 contained 15% of metakaolin as bond swap though for M80 it was 5% of metakaolin and for M100 it was 10% metakaolin and 10% of silica smolder. The volume portion of fiber was fluctuated by 0.5%; 1% and 1.5% and the viewpoints proportions considered were 50, 60 and 80. The test outcomes demonstrate that incorporation of steel fibres enhance significantly the the strength characteristics of concrete, predominantly the splitting tensile strength and flexural strength. In light of relapse investigation of the test information scientific models were produced for compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength of the steel fibre-reinforced high performance concrete.

  • The present paper deals with improvement in disperse dyeablility as well as imparting of cationic dyeablility to difficultly dyeable polypropylene by a melt blending technique. Isotactic polypropylene (PP) was blended with fibre grade polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), cationic dyeable polyethylene terephthalate (CDPET) and polystyrene (PS), individually. The resulting binary blends were spun and drawn into fibres at draw ratio 2, 2.5, and 3. The compatibility of blends, structural changes of fibres in terms of X-ray crystallinity, relative crystallinity, sonic modulus, birefringence and thermal stability were examined. The blended fibres were found to be disperse dyeable by the conventional method of high temperature and high pressure dyeing. And this dye ability increased with increase in the level of substitution. PP/CDPET blend also exhibited dyeablility with cationic dyes in addition to that with disperse dyes. The optimum level of blending was predicted keeping in view of tenacity and thermal stability of melt blend fibres. The wash fastness properties of the dyed fibres were found to be of high rate.

  • Although fibre reactive dyes for wool were developed before those for cellulosic fibres, there are still limited ranges of fibre reactive dyes available for wool compared to those for cellulosic fbres. Since Fujioka and Abeta introduced the first mixed bifunctional reactive system in the early 1980s for cellulosic fibres, there has been some works on cotton and on silk. (omitted)

  • In this paper, a novel fibrous material known as axially reinforced braided composite rods (BCRs) have been developed for reinforcement of soils. These innovative materials consist of an axial reinforcement system, comprised of longitudinally oriented core fibres, which is responsible for mechanical performance and, a braided cover, which gives a ribbed surface texture for better interfacial interactions with soils. BCRs were produced using both thermosetting (unsaturated polyester) and thermoplastic (polypropylene) matrices and synthetic (carbon, glass, HT polyethylene), as well as natural (sisal) core fibres. BCRs were characterized for tensile properties and the influence of core fibres was studied. Moreover, BCRs containing carbon fibre in the core composition were characterized for piezoresistivity and strain sensing properties under flexural deformation. According to the experimental results, the developed braided composites showed tailorable and wide range of mechanical properties, depending on the core fibres and exhibited very good strain sensing behavior.

  • Twelve new species of two genera Smenospongia and Cacospongia (Demospongia: Dictyoceratida: Thorectidae) are described from Gageodo Island and Ulleungdo Island, Korea. Of these, ten new species of the Smenospongia are distinguished from the other nine reported species of the genus by the skeletal structure and sponge colour. Primary fibres of the genus Smenospongia are mostly dense, dark colour, and invisible inside of fibres, but they are mostly cored detritus and echinated with spicules. Especially, the end of primary fibres at the surface shows densely cored with spicules. All these new species changed the colour. Two new species of the genus Cacospongia are compared with nine other reported species. In skeletal structure, primary fibres of the genus Cacospongia are light colour, visible inside and more heavily cored with spicules and sands. The skeleton of this genus has large meshes. The colour of the genus Cacospongia does not change.

  • The SPM could image the most detailed microstructure of a sample in a wet and dry state by measuring the interaction between the atoms on the sample surface and the extremely sharp probe tip. The refined fibre exhibited large wrinkles formed by fibrillar bundles, the disintegrated fibres extensively showed “scale-like features”. By using the Non-Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (NC-AFM) and Contact Atomic Force Microscopy (C-AFM) including Phase Detection Microscopy (PDM) and Force Modulation Microscopy (FMM), it was possible to investigate surface topography, surface roughness and mechanical property (hardness or visco-elasticity) of fibre surface in detail. The PDM and FMM images showed that the disintegrated only fibre displayed uniform mechanical properties, whereas the refined one did not. The surface roughness of pulp fibres was higher in refined fibres than in disintegrated fibres due to the presence of external fibrils. These SPM images would be used to provide visual evidence of morphological change of a single fibre created during mechanical treatments such as refining, drying, calendering and so on.

  • Ten new species of genus Sarcotragus (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) are described from Geomundo Island and Jejudo Island, Korea. All new species of the Sarcotragus are distinguished from the other reported species of Sarcotragus by the skeletal structure, especially fasciculate primary fibres. The characters of genus Sarcotragus have cylindrical primary fascicles filled with wads of filaments or flattened fascicles. All of the primary fibres are not cored with foreign debris. Secondary fibres have slightly fasciculate branch or plastic-like web. They are all not cored with foreign debris. All skeletal fibres are very irregular. The surface is covered with loose or tight filamentous membrane.

  • Environmental problems caused by extensive use of polymeric materials arise mainly due to lack of landfill space and depletion of finite natural resources of fossil raw materials like petroleum or natural gas. The substitution of synthetic petroleum-based resins with natural biodegradable resins appears to be one appropriate measure to remedy the above-mentioned situation. This study presents the development of a composite that uses environmentally degradable starch-based resin as matrix and natural mineral basalt fibres as reinforcement, and investigates the fibre's and the composite's mechanical properties. The tensile strength of single basalt fibres was verified by means of single fibre tensile tests and statistically investigated by means of a Weibull analysis. Prepreg sheets were manufactured by means of a modified doctor blade system and hot power press. The sheets were used to manufacture specimens with fibre volume contents ranging from 33% to 61%. Specimens were tested for tensile strength, flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength. Composites manufactured during this study exhibited tensile and flexural strength of up to 517 MPa and 157 MPa, respectively.
